Testing doesn't even need to be that rigorous for humans, it's easy to spot someone who is lying about the depth of their experience with a 15 minute conversation.

For AI this will be impossible, however.

If you're talking about testing of code, well "tests can only prove the presence of bugs, not their absence"

Credentialism is not a solution, it will just get gamed too. Indian diploma mills and mega IT consultancies pump out thousands of "qualified" engineers every year.

Every hiring manager worth their salt has caught at least one completely incompetent applicant with a CV full of certifications.

I appreciate the bravery of you and others in this thread, sharing details of really horrible - and at the time likely very shameful experiences.

I'm glad to hear you (all) made it to the other side, and hope your stories give others who are struggling with addiction courage to seek help and free themselves.

Covid school closures lasted months in the worst cases, never years.
Good points, but I don't think its at all about wisdom, but about wealth and power which typically takes some time to accumulate.

It's a concession by governments to give the pultocrats a seat at the table, lest they decide to use their power to overthrow the ruling order. Tale as old as time.

All the cries of ageism but there have been countless leaked reports of US Senators being treated for dementia and clearly cognitively impaired senators still serving. They're doing a weekend at bernies with McConnell right now!

Absolutely there are sharp people >65, but there is no question that cognitive decline starts in middle age and the risk for dementia increases dramatically past 65.

Then there is the argument, which imo is even stronger, of an inverting demographic pyramid and inter generational economic warfare to preserve pensions for people who won't live to see the effects of their policies. This is not at all sustainable and creates misery for the working class who will soon lack sufficient democratic power to vote their way out of it.

Democracy is two wolves and a lamb deciding what's for dinner, etc..

Re:Grace Hopper Celebration Cancelled on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @07:52AM (#50086217)
Well, they have said they would support the social democrat party leader as prime minister, prior to the election - as did the left and green parties and are (sort of) participating with those parties in negotiating the formation of a new government. And none have the mandates to form a government without each other. So I would say they are in fact part of the same "bloc", in some sense.

However, the left has stated that they rather reasonably won't support a government that they are not part of. The center party on the other hand has said they won't support any government that the left party is in and seem to be open to forming a government (at least not denying when being asked directly) with the right wing parties of the former government, despite that bloc losing the election.

When one party's "red lines" only seem to soften when facing the right, I think that does say something about their true intentions.

Re:Grace Hopper Celebration Cancelled on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @03:09AM (#50083583)
Sweden has bloc politics, i.e. no single party has the majority to govern.

The red-green bloc (left, center and greens) won a majority but the center party is playing kingmaker and refusing to let the left party into government. The left party has said from well before the election that they, reasonably, will not vote to support a government which they are not part of.

This has been due to decades of bourgeois / social democrat rat-fucking on policies, most notably disability / sick insurance reforms, after they got the left party's support votes. [1]

There is speculation that the center party would instead support the prior right wing government instead (voting with the extreme-right) - as long as the extreme right stays out of government, despite the extreme right getting all of their policies pushed through anyway. Even going so far as to withhold key votes in parliament until their immigration reforms (removing permanent residency and restricting citizenship, in this case) got passed. [2]

The short of it is that "centrist" parties are just right wing parties in disguise, in that they NEVER support leftist reforms but will happily support the right when it suits upper class economic interests.

Democracy being what it is, can be messy and nobody goes home happy. But the left of the left bloc saw the largest electoral gains in this election, so a move to the left is arguably what a growing portion of the electorate wanted. It was still a very close election, so you could frame it in many ways, but that the green-reds did see the biggest gains is fact.

Locking down algorithmic social media for kids/youth is an absolute no brainer for me. So many reasons, honestly. No regrets there, and they never had it so they didn't get addicted and don't miss it.

Maybe you're asking about the spotify chats though? It was challenging for me, yes. There were topics and discussions that moody kids would have that I now had a window into. It can be a bit scary as a parent to see that all without filters, but it was also an opportunity to check in with them and have conversations about it. Kids have all these feelings and conversations anyway, so it's just part of that age. My childhood was rough, so I'm just thankful it is not like that for them and they have people to talk to. As I parent of course I wish they'd come to me first, but I know I will never be their peer in that way.

I do wish I blocked short form video better, but that's more out of concern for their attention and my own aesthetic snobbery ;) I do significantly limit how much time they can spend watching it, and we all know its a "treat" akin to junk food. Sometimes they share it with me :)

Ohhhh.. I can just say that no parent makes it through the experience without regrets.

Also, it depends a lot on the kid, the relationship, etc. It was a fine line, these were important social interactions for them, but there was definitely risks to be made aware of and kids are famously bad at risk assessment.

So it was something I would monitor as best I could and check in with them on, but at some point you just have to trust them and hope any mistakes don't have overly severe consequences.

> I think it is more accurate to say, "everything you put on out on the Internet _might_ never go away." Because my experience has been, a lot already has.

Oh you are absolutely correct, and I agree.

However when parenting, one cannot help being drawn to hyperbole from time to time. I'd rather have them at least consider the worst case scenario. ;)

Discovered my kid doing exactly this years ago. We purposefully limited all social media, locked dowb devices etc, but life uh.. finds a way.

I was impressed, just had the standard talk about how you have to assume everything you put out on the internet never goes away and that you really have no idea who is on the other side of the screen, never share personal information, etc

Now they are older and are on ridiculous group chats with their friends. Pretty impossible to control tbh. At least they keep me up to date with the latest memes!

Re:DeepSeek API Pricing Update on Thursday August 13, 2026 @01:02PM (#49288858)
I was having the same issue. Did not find any provider that had a cache hit rate anywhere close to DeepSeeks own API.

Not sure if this was an OpenRouter issue or with the other inference providers.

You should google 40% of police..
For many immigration statuses in Sweden, you must leave and apply outside of the country (outside of Schengen for non EU-citizens) to change status. This was even the case before the current right wing government was elected.
Despite politics, TARP was arguably an economic success story for the US treasury despite public sentiment. Whether it created moral hazard or not I suppoae is up for debate.

GM on the other hand should have been left to die.

However, I was obliquely referring to the open transactionality and patronage encouraged by the current administration, and how the AI / big tech players have, with few exceptions, gleefully joined in.

Unless they run out of money for bribes, I think it's inevitable that current government will bend over backwards to prop them up.

Bold of you to assume competency will overpower politics in our current era.

They don't, in fact, at least not anymore:

"We estimate that net migration was between –10,000 and –295,000 in 2025, the first time in at least half a century it has been negative."

I would argue those at OpenAI or Anthropic are making considerably more than just "regular tech"

I would say to you who would equivocate and dither about lending your skills to a morally and ethically compromised war machine in exchange for a fat paycheck, the same thing that I teach my children:

"Everything and I mean everything can be taken from you except your integrity, only you can give that up"

Most reasonable take in the entire thread. Thanks for writing.

> peace is something that requires cooperation.

Funny that many people consider peace as simply being left alone, forgetting that we are fundamentally social animals and there are many very real benefits of being part of a (functioning) society.

Yes, its a treasure hunt every single time when some project has most of their discussions on discord. It's awful imo.
Re:Total monthly number of StackOverflow questions over time on Sunday January 04, 2026 @03:56AM (#46486242)
And discord is a terrible tool for knowledge collection imo. Their search is ok, but then I find myself digging through long and disjointed message threads, if replies/threading are even used at all by the participants.

An algolwiki is a great idea, but I just wanted to say I got a good chuckle from this, thanks :)

> May I suggest "PASTE": Patterns, Algorithms, Solutions, Techniques, and Examples. "Just copy PASTE", they'll say.

It's very out of context and so obviously coordinated.

It is also very strange to see the repeated attempts to import US culture war issues to Sweden. Often completely unrelated to Swedish national issues, just blindly throwing stuff at a wall to see what sticks and capture headlines for a few weeks.

The far-right Sverige Demokraterna party does this regularly, but other parties often fall for it too.

A more paranoid person might say it resembles Active Measures operations of a hostile foreign government that wants to distract and sow chaos in western states, but who knows...

This has been a moral panic in Sweden recently too. It came out of nowhere and seeing the news now in the UK, it sure feels coordinated.

The Liberal Party (what's in a name, anyway?) are campaigning to make it illegal in Sweden, go figure.

https://www.svt.se/nyheter/inrikes/liberalerna-kriminalisera...

75% of ICE detainees have no criminal convictions, per their own stats. This isn't goalpost shifting.

Immigration is a civil issue in the US, full stop. Immigration courts are administrative courts, not Title III criminal courts.

You are obviously a brand new bot account so I will mute you and move on.

75% of ICE detainees have no criminal convictions per ICEs own stats, however they conflate "immigration offenses" like filing errors with illegal entry so its impossible to tell from their own statistics to answer your question.

I might also add that, like it or not, asylum claims are a positive defense to illegal entry under US law and you can ONLY claim asylum upon US soil.

ICE has extreme arrest quotas now and are routinely exceeding their authority and violating the due process rights of of immigrants in thr US to meet those quotas.
