Do we have an estimate on the number of people capitalism has killed? Serious question.

Include deaths due to poverty and lack of affordable healthcare under capitalism, overworking and dangerous working conditions, and all wars and counter-insurgency waged on alternative economic systems globally.

Nice article, I'm sad to learn that I shouldn't be using Koopa. How are Peach and Mario not dominated on acceleration by Tanooki Mario and Luigi respectively?

Also, wonderful visualizations, but the change between blue and white backgrounds is really jarring to me.

Fun! But disappointing if you lose early. Maybe let the player continue after failing and showing a final score out of 18.

My 2017 RAV4 doesn't. I think "most" is an exaggeration

Saying “everyone” played those two titles is still incorrect. Personally I think the landscape was more fragmented then.
From UI perspective you are right, but not for APIs.
Re:Windows 10 refuses to go gentle into that good night on Thursday October 02, 2025 @09:25AM (#45449312)
My Windows 10 updates had been failing for the past 6 months. When shutting down my PC I'd get the notification to "update and shut down", but the update would routinely fail. I thought the outstanding updates were the reason I wasn't given an option to update in place to Windows 11, but that was actually because my i7 7700k isn't officially supported. I ended up needing to create a Windows 11 iso that doesn't enforce hardware requirements with Rufus [0]. I was building a new gaming rig in tandem, so I reformatted the lone remaining SSD on the machine and left the new windows install unactivated as I plan to give it to a neighbor or family friend who can be tasked with buying a copy of windows. But this means I was left without any free Windows 10 -> 11 upgrade and had to buy a new license for the new rig. I didn't try to do anything other than browse the internet on the unsupported hardware, but things seem fine.

So far Windows 11 on the new rig has been very smooth/stable and I can't think of any issues I've had after 2 weeks of gaming and other typical use. But the amount of internet-driven widgets that ultimately are a medium for ads is frustrating.

Is local not infeasible for models of useful size (at least on a typical dev machine with <= 64GB RAM and a single GPU)

I want to say Mark Zuckerberg but I think Meta's investment is also targeted at creating their own social media content
I think you may have been under a rock for the last 5-10 years
Well, what query engine do you use?

We use normal RDB tool like DBeaver against Trino JDBC and it works fine.

I have the same reaction as you - his persona makes me physically uncomfortable and I feel bad for the artists unless they have the common wholesome reaction to well-done research.

But how much of it is a "shtick"? I take it the guy is just weird. If that's the case, it's not forced or over the top.

Here we have an open-source algorithm that is useful to anyone with data. It doesn't have to be music

Re:Win your fantasy league using operations research on Thursday July 18, 2024 @11:39AM (#40996677)
First of all, other players are likely using the same naive approach and you need to differentiate yourself. Second, using simple EVs will give you consistent, but not top, results. You will likely always finish in the top third, but never in the top 1%, losing out to people who successfully predicted a low EV player's incredibly high output in a game.

This sounds very much like a spritesheet to me (who has never worked on video games). Is the concept similar, and what was the better approach at the time?

Yet in this case we are talking about compensating the compilers/massagers/owners of the datasets, not the original authors from wherever the data was originally scraped.

Literally anything in the document could out them. Color, font, word choice, numbers, etc. OpenAI fired two researchers this year for leaking information, likely watermarked resources. OpenAI takes this seriously

RIP. I just bought Shellac's debut album recently, and they have another set to release soon.

I recommend the Kreative Kontrol podcast episode with him and Fred Armisen from last year where they talk about their experiences in the Chicago music scene.
