News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

I thought all the AAA publishers switched to interactive films after they gave up on making video games.

In other news, trolling will soon be obsolete due to bloggers like this one.
Re:AMD Unleashes First-Ever 5 GHz Processor on Wednesday June 12, 2013 @07:46PM (#5871464)
I've been waiting since my Athlon64 died for AMD to make a chip worth getting. Them taking the brute force (P4) approach is not all that encouraging.
Re:Mac Pro on Monday June 10, 2013 @03:48PM (#5856784)
Another astronomically expensive Mac Pro. This time hermetically sealed and unupgradable. Lovely.
As far as I'm concerned, a single unsolicited message from anyone with no personal connection to myself constitutes spam. Obviously opt-in lists are a different story.

Anecdotally, most people aren't going to go through the couple or three clicks to unsubscribe. This is what spammers rely on.

Re:Self-proclaimed LulzSec leader arrested on Tuesday April 23, 2013 @10:04PM (#5599224)
They did not have a modicum of skill. I'm neutral on their endeavours, however LOIC and SQL injection is skiddy stuff.
Re:Why Amazon Hired a Car Mechanic to Run Its Cloud Empire on Tuesday February 19, 2013 @09:48PM (#5248671)
Reminds me of a friend who took the hole saw to the inner guards on his STi to make getting to the plugs easier.
Except that, you know, gas is everywhere and a tank lasts more than a hundred miles.
I'd guess it is. Diseases are still organisms, and we try pretty hard not to let them go extinct.
The people hosing their system like that aren't likely to be able to use a recovery partition. I would guess they'd take the computer to a shop to get it fixed.
Re:IGN Acquired by Ziff Davis on Monday February 04, 2013 @08:17PM (#5168416)
Don't worry, 9/10 reviews are still available for the bargain price of one pre-release copy of the game.

Well aren't you charming.
Re:Save your eyes, start using f.lux on Thursday January 10, 2013 @06:57PM (#5040528)
I tried this for like six months. Couldn't stand it. I get far better results adjusting environmental lighting. An LED strip casting a glow behind my monitor made the most difference.
Re:Never Lie About Who You Really Are on Wednesday January 09, 2013 @05:01PM (#5033835)
Real men don't fight straw men. You're the one disregarding a well thought out, informative post as 'smug heteronormative privilege'.
The whole point was to avoid Facebook.
Re:Never Lie About Who You Really Are on Wednesday January 09, 2013 @03:21PM (#5033260)
I suppose anything that doesn't conform to your world-view is 'smug heteronormative privilege'. If you want a big happy feel-good discussion I suggest you go back to Tumblr. HN is for constructive discussion.
I miss MSN chat. My friends have all long since migrated to Facebook. All I want is instant messaging.
Twelve thousand soul suckingly boring miles. I know hybrids are the future, but I'm happy for the future to wait until I die.
I find it very hard to believe that anyone, let alone the presumably technologically proficient people at Canonical, would actually think that sponsored search results are useful. When was the last time anyone clicked a sponsored Google result?
Re:Kim Dotcom Gets Green Light to Sue New Zealand Spies on Thursday December 06, 2012 @08:49PM (#4885063)
The head of the GCSE at the time is now our Governor General. So the guy directly at fault is untouchable and the Prime Minister flatly denied (lying) all knowledge of any spying. We're not so squeaky clean.
Re:Kim Dotcom Gets Green Light to Sue New Zealand Spies on Thursday December 06, 2012 @08:44PM (#4885046)
Rapt when I saw this on the news last night. A hugely influential decision. Not only is the GCSE now liable for their actions, but it opens up the opportunity to sue other organizations, which we have been unable to do since the eighties.
Re:Google Apps stops accepting free sign-ups on Thursday December 06, 2012 @08:13PM (#4884927)
I sorted out my gmail powered trendy [email protected] email not two weeks ago. Perhaps if they offered a single user package free of charge it would be more sustainable.
Re:Hacker News: DMCA on Tuesday December 04, 2012 @09:25PM (#4874551)
Or a field which requires fine motor skills.
Considering Sony has never (as far as I can remember) had a competing Android flagship, not to mention the financial state of Sony in general; I somewhat doubt Sony will pose any threat to HTC.
Re:Why aren't we all using Japanese toilets? on Wednesday November 14, 2012 @07:39PM (#4786436)
The original purpose is to squirt water at your anus to loosen any left over faecal matter.
Re:Use Hulu, Netflix, Pandora and Rdio from any country on Tuesday November 06, 2012 @09:32PM (#4751875)
Chrome warns about many plugins wanting access to all sites. IIRC it's a problem with Chrome's regex matching rather than any plugin.
Ah, I bought a beta key a while ago. Nice to see local developers making a mark. Certainly the best hack/slash game out right now.
Re:Hacking ls -l on Sunday October 14, 2012 @05:03PM (#4652633)
If one was so non-technical as to be incapable of using diff and a bug tracker, perhaps they shouldn't be writing manpages.
Just out of interest, what is your game?
Re:The Ultimate Vim Distribution on Wednesday October 10, 2012 @08:58PM (#4638915)
I never really had a problem with configuring vim and installing plugins manually. This seems like it'll make vim more daunting for new users, while getting in the way of experienced users.
