Usually it wasn't the tapes that were unreliable, but the tape devices (firmware) and/or the drivers. Years back I used to work on a backup product - one of the tape devices would write a random amount of zeroes after each round of N megabytes written to the tape. So if you were "lucky" and all the backups were below N megabytes in size, everything worked perfectly. We weren't even aware there was an issue until some of our customers started complaining.

Debugging this was really fun, especially due to the randomness factor. :)

Re:How is music possible on Friday October 23, 2026 @05:09PM (#50215355)
I was intrigued by your (philosophical) comment and I'm interested in what kind of music you usually listen to.

My thoughts:

> Music has objective properties communicated via audible medium, and what's more, of a quantitative nature.

I would argue that this is probably a western-classical view of music. Music can be quantified/measured, but those numbers are just a tiny part of the listening experience.

> It expresses order.

Sure, but that doesn't necessarily mean that "maximum order" is the most pleasing one. Expectation/resolution etc. may be important, but what if for example a tune does not resolve to expectations? Is it automatically "bad music"?

> The more beautiful music is, the more integrity, proportion, and clarity it has.

Beauty is in the eye (or maybe better in this case - the ear) of the beholder. And for me personally beauty isn't necessarily clarity. I like dissonance in music, maybe some atonality, quarter tones/microtonality, irregular rhythms and polyrhythms etc. These things somewhat violate the aesthetic value (beauty) and that is what makes it more interesting, at least to me.

Just my 2p, I'd be happy to hear your point of view :)

Re:SDF vs. MSDF vs. Slug: GPU Text Rendering on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @03:01PM (#49912919)
Stuff like this is a giveaway for me:

> Drawing it on a GPU, crisply, at any size, under any 3D transform, while the text changes every frame, is not.

> One small texture, resolution independent within reason, one cheap shader.

English is not my native language, so I may be wrong here.

I have a 43" Philips Ambilight (43PUS8510, 4K QLED). It's not a dumb TV per se, but you don't have to use any of the smart features, and - most important - you don't have to connect it to a network.

Aren't most Austrian dialects considered as sub-dialects of Bavarian?

Re:The Indo-European Family Tree on Friday August 14, 2026 @12:17PM (#49300831)
"Kočevsko" is the Slovene word for the Gottschee region, most likely just a slovenified version of the original German name. "Kočevarji" then refers to the people from this region and "kočevarščina" to their language.

Also note that the emphasis in the above terms is on the letter e, not on the o - "kočévsko".

This one's also interesting - a non-local (geographically disconnected) Bavarian dialect: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gottscheerish

Where I live corn was never used for producing oil. For that purpose we used rapeseed/canola, sunflowers, olives and pumpkin seeds. Corn grown here is mostly used for corn flour, cornmeal (polenta), or for animal feed.
Re:Read this before you buy that TV streaming stick on Thursday July 30, 2026 @04:20PM (#49115221)
Two things:

- How are these "legitimately free"? For example AMC is a commercial TV channel and as far as I know, they don't offer free streaming. Same goes for MGM, FilmBox etc.

- Strictly speaking this isn't IPTV, it's just web streams. IPTV is usually delivered via multicast (MPEG-TS/RTP/RTSP streams, over UDP mostly).

FR released the source code for their tools in 2012, some of the concepts are described in the repo, e.g.: https://github.com/farbrausch/fr_public/blob/master/werkkzeu...

A couple of additional links from my bookmarks:

Same sentiment here. My litmus test is - after creating a window - "how many lines of code does it take to render a triangle?".

With the old OpenGL API you could do this in like 10 lines of code (probably even less with SGI's GL).

With the new/shader-based API, well... https://learnopengl.com/Getting-started/Hello-Triangle

Vulkan - I don't even want to know.

There are still some remnants of this in Serbian and Croatian, e.g. the semi-dual "nas dvoje / nas dva".

Note that OGG is not a video codec, it's just a container format. I.e. an OGG file can contain MPEG-4/H.264-encoded video.
golang doesn't statically link everything by default (anymore?), this is from FreeBSD:

    $ ls -l axe
    -rwxr-xr-x  1 root wheel 12830781 Mar 12 22:38 axe*

    $ ldd axe
    axe:

        libc.so.7 => /lib/libc.so.7 (0xe2e74c27000)

Re:Kelp – simple replacement for homebrew on macOS on Monday May 19, 2025 @04:19PM (#44034362)
That's not a proper explanation IMO. The thing is - all these settings are introduced "quietly" as new defaults and you have to opt out. So one day you decide to upgrade a package, brew updates itself, and then starts doing all these things that weren't present before (and are most likely not needed at all). It's very annoying, and a dark pattern to say the least.
Re:Kelp – simple replacement for homebrew on macOS on Monday May 19, 2025 @03:52PM (#44034085)
I got bitten by broken upgrades in the past, when you were still able to simply "brew switch" to the old version if it was there. In addition the cleanup time is annoying when upgrading a lot of packages, so I kept the setting.
Re:Kelp – simple replacement for homebrew on macOS on Monday May 19, 2025 @03:24PM (#44033772)
Maybe also these, to limit other annoyances:

  export HOMEBREW_NO_EMOJI=1
  export HOMEBREW_NO_ENV_HINTS=1
  export HOMEBREW_NO_INSTALL_CLEANUP=1
And then they don't ever open the page, right?
