I think you may have read the parent's statistics backwards. Their point (correct or incorrect) was that younger academics are more accepting of the suppression of speech.

Realistically, whoever manages you will take credit for the additional productivity and leverage it to get more money for themselves.

I work as a land surveyor. I'm outdoors every day, often in the woods. The pay is decent and the work is rewarding.
This is exactly how language works; words are adopted across domains and change meaning over time.

Yes, if only there was some kind of democratic process in this country, where citizens could influence the laws that are passed...

I find it quite nice. Everyone has their own tastes I suppose.
My only complaint with self-hosting matrix is that the canonical python implementation is quite resource-heavy. I was unable to run it on a cheap VPS. I hope that the ecosystem will improve in the future.

And similarly, some people are always hungry for an opportunity to villanize OpenAI. This kind of polarized, black-and-white thinking is not productive.
Re:Firefox bug gets fixed after 25 years on Wednesday May 22, 2024 @12:29PM (#40442859)
A few points:

- Arch Linux isn't some fringe operating system full of zealots, it's one of the most popular Linux distribution (it was the most commonly used Linux distribution in the Steam hardware survey in April 2024, beating out Ubuntu). I think many people like it precisely because it takes an opinionated stance on issues such as these.

- You characterize people who ask for these features (for example in bug tracker) as "bullying" maintainers - the fact that such requests are common should show you how widespread support is for these ideas. It seems odd to procure feedback about what users want and then say, "well, that's not what they really want, it must just be a vocal minority".

- Directories like /use/local and /opt are not vestigial, they serve specific purposes. I don't think it's fair to call them a "holdover". For example, without /usr/local, how do you separate software compiled and installed by the user vs. from a package manager?

- I agree completely that containerization of apps is the future.

App sandboxing is indeed the way of the future, and being worked on by e.g. flatpak.

Common rule of thumb I've always heard is one (8oz) glass of water per beer drank. It works well for me although I never have more than 3-4 anyways.
This isn't unique to keeping backyard chickens, it's an ethical issue with factory farming as well.
Yes, but GPS is a colloquial synonym for GNSS systems such as these :)
It seems China isn't worried about this anti-chinese policy. Quite scary.

Of course, in the real world, people are more likely to use desmos than a TI-84; the test conditions matching reality is a good improvement.

My guess is that spiders build webs in many places, but only the successful ones remain. In other words, survivor bias.
To me, all dishes with celery taste worse. I can't stand the flavor or smell of it. When I'm cooking, I always omit it. I'm not a picky eater otherwise.
People can die in many different cases - I think it should be up to the wrench owner to make this decision, and not the wrench seller (who collects money for calibrating wrenches).
Re:The optimal amount of fraud is non-zero (2022) on Monday January 08, 2024 @10:35AM (#38913414)

I'm sure the median income across all YouTube channels is not $4,600, so I guess this comes down to how they define "typical".

Some would say it's over-regulated. In either case, there is certainly a large amount of unhealthy regulatory capture that benefits private companies.
If there is an organization which is arbitrarily limiting supply, it is not accurate to call it the "free market".

Graduating X doctors per year seems like a much worse solution than allowing to graduate however many are willing to learn.
