Re:Developer account removed by Apple – $108,878 frozen on Thursday November 23, 2023 @12:50PM (#38395382)
If any amount of money was meaningless to apple, they wouldn't be where they are today.
Don't forget that google also has mozilla by the balls and can turn firefox into a community project at any time.
Re:Charging a lithium battery to 80% only? on Wednesday November 22, 2023 @04:47AM (#38377146)
Yes, as far as I know you do.

I don't know how they did it, but it even works when the phone isn't booted.

Haven't implemented negative prompts yet, but from what I can tell it's as simple as substracting from the prompt in embedding space.
Re:Charging a lithium battery to 80% only? on Tuesday November 21, 2023 @01:20AM (#38360063)
I can highly recommend ACC (and the ACCA app [1] for setup). It lets me limit my phone to 90% charge with the ability to ignore the limit temporarily when I need to. That's very useful for fixing the battery calibration, which can go bad when using ACC.

It has reduced my battery wear by 40-50% according to Accubattery's capacity graph.

Re:Charging a lithium battery to 80% only? on Tuesday November 21, 2023 @01:09AM (#38359990)
My Oneplus 5T got replaced because it has a small crack in the screen so it's impossible to disassemble without breaking the screen. I used ACC to only charge that to 90% so I could get three years out of the battery instead of just two.

I'll probably get a fairphone next so I don't need to worry about this. But the people with glued-in batteries definitely have to.

Teams will let you use chat and join meetings in firefox, but as soon as you try to make a call you'll get the "fuck you" popup.
Re:550 of 700 Employees OpenAI tell the board to resign on Monday November 20, 2023 @09:47AM (#38349038)
Sounds a lot like MS wants to have OpenAI but without a boards that considers pesky things like morals.
I wouldn't interpret missing interactions on twitter as more than people not using twitter.
Re:Why aren't motherboards mostly USB-C by now? (2021) on Sunday November 19, 2023 @04:27AM (#38330837)
I once bent the USB-C connector on a dell dock just because the cable is stiff and the bend from going below my desk put too much force on the connector. It still works, but has an angle now. If the cable wasn't permanently attached, having the wear parts on that side would be fine. The EU should definitely mandate that, I don't see any technical reasons for soldering one side of the cable.
Re:HHKB Studio: The New Happy Hacking Keyboard with TrackPoint on Thursday November 16, 2023 @04:29AM (#38287399)
They used to use topre switches which many people swear by and combined it with a modern design. Compared to the gaming keyboards with MX blues and the ultra-cheap rubberdome boards of the time, it was a great package so they gained popularity.

Not sure how they got traction at the start because the main selling point was the weird layout and they didn't have topre switches yet.

This one doesn't have topre either. It still sounds great, but if I wanted MX switches and a trackpoint, I'd go for a Tex shinobi. Shortcut hell is a problem indeed, I want to Alt+F4 with one hand and on a 60% that's impossible to implement without something like spaceFN, which again has to be turned off for gaming.

Re:HHKB Studio: The New Happy Hacking Keyboard with TrackPoint on Thursday November 16, 2023 @04:15AM (#38287279)
Those boards are absolutely gorgeus. I'm not looking for a trackpoint or a standard layout, but I'm still tempted to buy one.
Re:NTSB Calls for Technology to Reduce Speeding in All New Cars on Wednesday November 15, 2023 @05:07PM (#38283264)
This is why my next car is hopefully going to be my last one. I have my eyes on an ND Miata. Tried researching the privacy aspect and found one reddit comment from 69 days ago saying the infotainment system is old enough to not do this crap. Does anyone have more info on that?
Re:NTSB Calls for Technology to Reduce Speeding in All New Cars on Wednesday November 15, 2023 @05:00PM (#38283174)
The tracking goes much deeper than that [1] and it isn't the only part of the ongoing overdigitalization of cars. Access to diagnostics and the ability to repair them yourself have suffered a lot with the introduction of EVs. Parts and manuals are harder to find for those than ICE cars. Mercedes won't even let you open the hood of the EQS you bought from them.

Re:NTSB Calls for Technology to Reduce Speeding in All New Cars on Wednesday November 15, 2023 @04:53PM (#38283088)
Because a car that does well on the highway is also equipped for higher speeds. You don't want an engine that redlines at highway speeds so it's geared down, but that means you have headroom. You don't want tires or suspension that run at their limits during normal use either, so you get a car with all the parts it needs to go faster.
Early alexa devices also have power supplies that are rated at 5.2V, those could be an alternative. I also had a good experience with a 30W oneplus warp charger after some power issues with cheap 5V2A ones.
I'm pretty sure schedulers are just black magic and anyone who doesn't work directly with them is unqualified to make statements like these.
It's a numbers game. You can't convince everyone, but lobbyists are generally good at their job and know how to find people with malleable opinions.

I don't think there's a topic where lobbying doesn't work to at least some degree. Or do you have an example?

Re:Now that cars are like smartphones, we don't really own them on Saturday November 11, 2023 @05:19PM (#38235156)
> Cars are required to be online for an emergency call in case of accident.

Does that mean online as in internet connection or just GSM?

Re:Now that cars are like smartphones, we don't really own them on Saturday November 11, 2023 @05:14PM (#38235119)
Ah yes, becoming a mechanic and building your own car is the solution.

For the people who can do it it's great, but most just can't. I can barely change my tires, how would I swap an entire drivetrain and rewire the whole thing?

They sent out a warning to every single one of their users about this. It's that big of a deal.

But unfortunately it's not as big a deal as microsoft's other fuckups.

Re:Gnome Receives €1M from German Government on Saturday November 11, 2023 @06:59AM (#38229550)
The ones that want a DE that works exactly how they like it. I quickly lose my focus from having to deal with even the most minor annoyances and KDE lets me change the little things very easily.
Re:Gnome Receives €1M from German Government on Saturday November 11, 2023 @06:50AM (#38229499)
Desktop mode is KDE on X. In that case your comment is true, steam will just run on KDE.

Game mode is a wayland session with gamescope as a WM, but it isn't controlled directly by the user. The steam client controls the WM and exposes those controls to you through menus and handles stuff like notifications and being a driver for the controller, so you could call it a DE in game mode.

Re:Gnome Receives €1M from German Government on Saturday November 11, 2023 @06:43AM (#38229460)
And it just works without any tinkering. Maybe that part is more important than the choice of DE.

I'm partial to KDE myself, but honestly anything with a sensible panel is usable.

Because it would confuse germans even more than Konsole.
Re:Goodbye Spotify on Friday November 10, 2023 @08:28PM (#38226683)
The spotify app has become so ridiculously bad I can't use it anymore. I found out about Zotify [1], which can rip my entire collection from spotify. The API rate limits anything faster than real time listening though, so it'll take a few weeks to download everything.

Re:Steam Deck OLED on Friday November 10, 2023 @05:11AM (#38217099)
I definitely noticed the driver issues increasing as my GPU got older. On windows I spent hours looking for driver versions that work with all my games and then didn't update for months.

If it wasn't for AI, I'd upgrade to AMD right now. But ROCm and the CUDA translation layer don't quite seem to be there yet.

Re:Steam Deck OLED on Thursday November 09, 2023 @02:07PM (#38209419)
What are you running exactly? I haven't been able to get a 144hz + 60hz setup working with KDE on X. The main monitor just doesn't want to do 144hz, even if I disable the other one via xrandr. My 1070 Ti has me afraid of wayland because the nvidia driver already breaks something once a month.
