Re:Low-intensity fires reduce wildfire risk by 60% on Saturday November 11, 2023 @12:43PM (#38232514)
Considering that this pollutes the air we breathe and releases sequestered carbon, might I suggest interring trimmed brush deep enough to not burn but shallow enough to feed roots as it decomposes into the soil rather than air.

Obviously this entails some effort spent, but it seems correct, versus the old burning practices.

Might I suggest that at human current scale we can’t pursue the same ways as when we were few and low footprint per capita?

Re:You Can Be Addicted to Weed: I Was on Friday September 15, 2023 @01:38AM (#37518894)
So boring to see a steady drumbeat of anti cannabis here on HN. Daily articles in the feed, etc…

I use cannabis to control intra ocular pressure and it works as well as the timolol drops and without the exhaustion of the beta blocker. 3-4 points hg down for 4-6 hours as I measured it. Home tonometer offerings are scant, however I think real-time monitoring is a game changer. Aerobic exercise is also useful in lowering eye pressure

Re:What if AI treats humans the way we treat animals? on Friday September 15, 2023 @12:45AM (#37518540)
What if journalists actually knew what an LLM is and how the ability to string verbals tokens is not intelligence.

2023 is the year Program or be Programmed by Douglas Rushkoff became extremely relevant

Re:AI and the End of Programming on Friday September 15, 2023 @12:34AM (#37518474)
It doesn’t reason, it isn’t intelligent. There are humans who avoid reasoning but the biological capacity for this is inbuilt.

An LLM is like asking Google to make a search results collage. It’s an entirely derivative essentializer

Re:AI and the End of Programming on Friday September 15, 2023 @12:32AM (#37518461)
That’s going to depend upon deployment context. The hype around LLMs and the word AÍ has certainly been received by the general public as license for further penetration of markets. I doubt most humans are comfortable with autonomous vehicles yet we have a relentless push for the same from the worlds richest man, who insists upon foisting it upon us all. I see LLMs being deployed in wildly inappropriate scenarios at the moment, and safety critical can consist of an interruption while driving, for example. Media systems in vehicles are borderline actively dangerous IMO
Re:When Americans Abandon the Constitution on Friday September 15, 2023 @12:22AM (#37518393)
The MAGAS have taken over the GOP. Rank and file GOP now openly espouse Qanon precepts. It’s standard fare to speak of gutting support for Ukraine and of support for Putin. We witnessed a physical coup attempt Jan 6th, rallied by Mr Trump and yet his GQP colleagues are literally running interference for Trump, attempting to stymie any attempts at accountability.

Barring some extremists who call FDR “radical”, I cannot see the case for “both sides ism” It’s apparent to me that ONE party has chosen attempting to gain ABSOLUTE POWER in lieu of helping the nation or staying true to the constitution.

The stacked Supreme Court is a point in case: McConnell blocked Obamas single appointee that he had a right to appoint and this was a violation of the constitution.(no mention of election calendar in appointments)

Trump then railroaded through Congress an unprecedented 3 justices! Unheard of. Absolute power grab. No surprise that they overturned Roe v Wade.

I see América on the precipice and the GQP trying to push it over the edge.

If Trump gets in in 2024, we won’t see presidential elections again. He admires banana republic dictators and hates due process

Re:The Day Elon Musk Decided to Rip Servers Out of a Data Center on Thursday September 14, 2023 @03:25AM (#37506006)
Elon musk is an idiot, and deliberately so. Most fan noise on the net is paid, I reckon
Re:The Day Elon Musk Decided to Rip Servers Out of a Data Center on Thursday September 14, 2023 @03:24AM (#37505991)
Wow, I would never hire you with such a reckless attitude. “Turned out ok” is not an acceptable excuse for high risk behavior. I think your insult is icing on the cake. GTFO
Re:Why not punish families? A challenge for consequentialists on Wednesday September 13, 2023 @10:10AM (#37496992)
That is literally what incarcerating someone does, punish their family as well
Re:Touch Pianist on Monday September 11, 2023 @05:59AM (#37465020)
The bigger issue in guitar shops is that the least experienced player is the one salivating to hook up to the Marshall stack and play smoke on the water. Make them demo small combo amps instead and we are all good
Re:Touch Pianist on Monday September 11, 2023 @05:51AM (#37464966)
I like this. I feel like it conveys proportional relative intervals visually as well, so it’s teaching you patterns correlated in audio and visual geometry
Stop feeding Starlink rich government contracts. This shouldn’t be handled by a private contractor at all
Re:12% of Americans eat half the nation's beef on Friday September 01, 2023 @03:36AM (#37347831)
That would make them beefeaters. (Cue funny furry hats)
Totally, but it’s an industry term since the Nord Lead, and honestly there’s no attempts at replication of analog stochastics, barring “oscillator drift” or some pseudorandom phenomena applied to pitch or phase if combining generators.

An analog synthesizer is something else. The microcontroller used to make this is fairly interesting, however, as it can easily be user-hacked to achieve other things

https://www.pjrc.com/store/teensy41.html

Get the mini freak. I returned a micro due to the menu diving and minimal controls. Great sound engine on both. (Same)
**components misused: cheap electrolytics have their uses. Underspeccing everything everytime To just last until warranty is something else
Plus, if you are cost cutting: buy a teensy and use your Korg NanoKontrol and open the Arduino IDE and go to “VA synth demo” under teensyduino presets and boom, at least it’s not making Uli Behringer any money at the expense of some other companies R&D and the reputation of some components inappropriately used.

* well, there’s no VA synth preset, per se, but teensy audio library brings you the menu and you are a programmer or else why are you here?

Friends don’t let friends buy Behringer
McDonalds famously uses yellow to get people to eat and leave in a hurry. Lavender and violet are universally calming in humans. I don’t have the links handy, but color psychology doesn’t vary much by individuals, it’s something somewhat hard wired.
I’m pretty sure we do driver harrowing on purpose, here in Portugal. This is not to excuse rash driving, which is rampant, but rather to indicate the presence of sadistic individuals in our roadway infrastructure safety and design areas.
Victim blaming is never a good look. I’m aghast at your nerve in writing what you wrote. Ban self-driving cars.

You do not have the right to excuse vehicular homicide.

That’s a bunch of FUD. Climate science is and has been solid, but fossil fuel industry lobbies have tried to add doubt to what is certain and known. I see your tactics and I call you out on them.
What a misleading headline. “Exacerbating” ocean heating, perhaps, but THE primary cause is anthropogenic combustion of fossil fuels.
Re:Meta Open Sources AudioCraft: Generative AI for Audio on Wednesday August 02, 2023 @02:27PM (#36974876)
I don’t agree with your definition of music. For me, as both a musician and a listener, music is communication between human beings via harmonic carrier waves. Using a machine to make word salad copies of existing communiques is literally just nonsense to me
Well, this sort of problem is typically handled by stuff like what is know as “scaffolding” in the Ruby on Rails world, and doubtless has other names. It’s about generating a “resource” and its CRUD stuff according to some agreed upon standards one can define, etc
Re:Is the era of VC-fueled complexity ending? on Friday July 28, 2023 @02:55AM (#36903774)
Wow, jquery and ai? Are you sure?
I cannot understand how Microsoft products or any proprietary software is acceptable in DOD or National Security provisioning
esim = yuck. I abhor the notion. Very political direction to hijack us all.
Re:The Design Thinking Movement Is Absurd (2018) on Thursday July 27, 2023 @11:59AM (#36895577)
In addition to the usual Medium related complaints, I spend an inordinate amount of time scrolling a giant polemic against something I didn’t even have a notion of a definition of, only knowing thst it was supposedly bullshit, whatever it was.

This article needs work.

Yes you can. Marriage, military service, or being over age 23 are sufficient in the USA for this purpose
