Students should pay for the privilege and opportunity provided by the diploma, namely a way to set themselves apart from the plebeians. Prestige is something AGI will never replace.

Drugs kills 100,000 people per year according to the article but alcohol kills 3,000,000 yet the CIA operative turned Anheuser-Busch CEO Brendan Whitworth walks free.
>One ritual involved tying something that belonged to a sick person to the end of a throwing stick smeared in human or kangaroo fat. The stick was thrust into the ground before a small fire was lit underneath.

>"The mulla-mullung would then chant the name of the sick person, and once the stick fell, the charm was complete," a Monash University statement said.

Re:My kid sounds like ChatGPT, and soon yours might, too on Thursday December 28, 2023 @11:38PM (#38801798)
Noam Chomsky famously discovered that the building blocks of language are preloaded into the human mind, children use a hypothetical tool called the Language Acquisition Device to quickly learn grammar even with little input. I wonder is this a genetic device or something of a quantum nature?

I hope this is part of his larger plan to delete Twitter.
Re:Ask HN: What do you use to replace incandescent lights? on Friday November 17, 2023 @07:30AM (#38302602)
I have something like this it’s very nice at the warmest setting but only equal to maybe 25w incandescent. https://www.amazon.com/ONLSITY-Pendant-Lights-Outdoor-Contro... I think the defused cover on these lights make them exceptional source of light.

For regular bulbs I use Energetic Edison style bulb https://www.amazon.com/Equivalent-Filament-Daylight-Non-Dimm...

Re:How Stone Walls Became a Signature Landform of New England on Friday November 17, 2023 @07:17AM (#38302500)
There’s a very good YouTube channel that deals with the history of New England forests with Tom Wessels, a terrestrial ecologist, it’s called NewEnglandForests
Because of this, a mini split is becoming a very common DIY project, the tool kit goes for $250 on Amazon, from what I understand you'll get a better install doing it yourself because you can purge the lines for the recommend 24 hours.
In the US the solar industry waxes and wanes in certain states due to regulations, discounts and how the power companies treat home solar.

States define the ratio of electricians to installers so with the right ratio and availability of work there are plenty of contactors who will hire electricians without expecting any work to be completed.

Re:The global fight against HIV is at risk on Saturday November 04, 2023 @01:06PM (#38142936)
There's an estimated 156,000 people in the USA that have HIV and are unaware of their status, 21% of the population believes in witchcraft here. It's not that HIV doesn't pose a public health risk, it's just not nearly as prevelent.
It's name is however absent from the map.
And Palestine is missing from Google maps, always has been. A search for State of Palestine on Bing maps renders Palestine, Texas.
Re: on Monday October 23, 2023 @04:01PM (#37990770)
On Sunday morning, Musk posted a picture of Wikipedia asking for a donation below a snoozing emoji.

“Have you ever wondered why the Wikimedia Foundation wants so much money?” Musk asked in the next tweet. “It certainly isn’t needed to operate Wikipedia. You can literally fit a copy of the entire text on your phone! So, what’s the money for? Inquiring minds want to know…”

Re:An antiquated law rules mining in the West on Sunday October 22, 2023 @12:45AM (#37972888)
Did you purchase it outright or have the previous owners murdered?
Re:Ask HN: "Ad blockers are not allowed on YouTube" aggresively on Thursday October 12, 2023 @07:16PM (#37864409)
Oh big time favor, time to backup our Gmail accounts the wardens of the internet gulag are getting desperate.
Re:Railway Time on Sunday October 08, 2023 @03:48AM (#37808626)
At the time the American railroad interests were enslaving tens of thousands of Chinese and perpetuating genocide against the native people and animals, that's technically not co-operation nor was anything involving the English working class and industrial revolution.

I think the word you're looking for is subordination.

Re:Running Stable Diffusion XL 1.0 in 298MB of RAM on Tuesday October 03, 2023 @12:26PM (#37754068)
125 watt hours for a raspberry pi to generate an image in 10 hours compared to 7 watt hours for a 440W PC to run for 1 minute.
Re:Ask HN: 6 months later. How is Bard doing? on Tuesday September 19, 2023 @04:30AM (#37567023)
AI generated monetized content via midjourney, text to gif and text to video.
Construction work isn't that hard or back breaking. One guy's operating a machine and one guy is spotting him, you drive a lot, take hour lunches, sleep in the machines. $25 an hour to start. Foreman's are usually busy with the people above them.

I run a homestead as my primary means of surviving, it's similar work, 12 hour days, a fraction of the pay and pretty darn fulfilling.

USPS is a government service but it is self funded, the domain system has evolved a pure unregulated capitalist way of dealing with this dilemma.

Purchasers of domains are simply expected to buy all misspelled and closely matching addresses or a opportunistic advertiser or worse will set-up shop.

Re:I wish GPT4 had never happened on Saturday April 08, 2023 @09:53AM (#35493110)
That's not how capitalism works, white papers show the world's elite are well aware the singularity marks the beginning of a new civilization, humans would be lucky to get a supporting roll.
Re:There's something off about LED bulbs on Thursday March 30, 2023 @07:50PM (#35380478)
I'm interested in installing your design in my cabin as well, could also be very useful for boats too.
Re:My Startup Banking Story on Wednesday March 15, 2023 @11:10AM (#35169508)
650 dollar bills is a lot of singles, it could feed a man for a month or more, or provide enough gas to drive across the US, it must be a lot of money, but it's quickly lost when it comes to basic needs like housing, healthcare and education.
Re:Smart Move, Google on Thursday November 24, 2022 @11:04PM (#33739064)
I had to look up this linear keyboard they created, pretty unique.

Seems like it can be changed.

Settings > General > Keyboard, then switch from “Automatic” to “Grid”.

I use a KVM extender and keep my desktops in the server room.
I just measured 4.3 Mbps with Starlink I wonder if they will consider that priority tier data, as it is around the max throughput with the default hardware.
If a comedian is deplatformed should they ban the production team, ban Alex Jones' sound guy maybe, what about the people who voted for Trump, willing participation?

I could imagine certain protests being demonized and their attendants removed from meta for violating terms of service.

The real question is do they virtually round up the avatars for public deletions, or do they just disappear them?

I think a lot of people would enjoy virtual public executions, if anyone from meta is listening.

Hot water tanks and heating elements corrode over time.
