Trivial for anyone who can click "host server" button in a multiplayer game / file sharing program / voice chat?
Re:Why Are Young People Pretending to Love Work? on Saturday January 26, 2019 @04:56PM (#19008762)
Maybe they retire early because they are unable to work because they are dying.
If you don't mind, which of them and how?
Re:Google Memo on Cost Cuts Sparks Heated Debate Inside Company on Saturday January 26, 2019 @03:45PM (#19008384)
Some other people have mentioned hiring people defensively so they can't compete. I don't know how true that is, but if it is... then making a redundant project means you need to be retained so you don't write clones for anyone else.

I'll press if I think I can't jaywalk in a reasonable timeframe. If I can then no sense holding up traffic.
Re:Landlords forcing smart locks on tenants on Monday January 21, 2019 @04:04PM (#18963594)
Most people don't know lockpicking so while you are right in principle this will change things in practice.
Re:Economics of Spotify is making songs shorter on Monday January 21, 2019 @03:57PM (#18963554)
It doesn't have to be the artists optimizing. It could be that everyone makes whatever they want but those who happen to make shorter songs are pushed up and those that make longer songs are pushed out.
As someone who was only briefly acquainted with the "buy ugly produce" idea in the first place and thought it sounded vaguely good. I never looked into actually taking action because I couldn't be bothered.

I do think they are being unkind and rude. There were too sides here the "scammers" and the clueless good people who got taken for a ride. Alienating the latter group is a mistake and will just make people avoid you because they will never be good enough for you anyway.

I on the other hand, feel vindicated in my apathy. "Trying to do good is a waste of time, the world is too ungrateful"

They cost money for both parties though so in that sense it's fair.
Sounds great for first job out of college not so great if you already have a good job.
In the long term we should bee able to clean it up again. I'd be more worried about shorter terms

Re:Disable Flash support by default in Firefox 69 on Monday January 14, 2019 @08:45AM (#18902862)
It's a reminder that browsers are such huge beasts that no one can viable fork them when they feel the browsers are regressing.

I'm not a lawyer yada yada but it says on my dollar bill that it's legal tender for all debts, public and private.

Re:The blind mind: No sensory visual imagery in aphantasia on Wednesday January 02, 2019 @07:15AM (#18805710)
My thinking is that people have lossily compressed images in their minds.

I heard chess masters are way better than normal people at remembering legal chess positions but no better than average at remembering illegal ones.

So I think it could be about learning a better representation with fewer artifacts.

Software is eating the world and it's almost finished.

Re:It is fast or it is wrong on Saturday December 29, 2018 @02:35PM (#18785283)
Irc has been on the market for a long long time, but slack won anyway.

Maybe the extra features saved users more time then they lost from running bloated JavaScript.

Re:It is fast or it is wrong on Saturday December 29, 2018 @02:20PM (#18785213)
I'm always suspicious when people say something can be done. Why isn't it the default then? Because there is some drawback to that choice. But what is it?
Busybody morality police would abuse this to deprive people of their freedom of telephone. Hard no
>at this point these scam phone calls may be nearing the majority of the phone calls placed in the USA, so it's going to be a huge financial disruption to the carriers when they have to give up their game.

That's a shortsighted perspective. phone numbers will only survive if they solve the spam problem.

Many people don't pick up from unknown numbers anymore. It's just a matter of time before legitimate people stop trying to call as no one responds anyway.

Re:Students are turning to sex work for extra money on Thursday December 27, 2018 @03:56AM (#18768374)
>so how are the men able to survive?

Maybe they(equivalently poor men) are not and therefore choose not to study?

Men do study at a lower rate after all

Re:Ranges, Code Quality, and the future of C++ on Thursday December 27, 2018 @03:46AM (#18768338)
Where are the local variables stored for a coroutine?

I do like new advanced features but we must not let them make us lose sight of the metal.

Re:Evaluation of five password managers on Saturday December 22, 2018 @11:02AM (#18741076)
What I like about keypass is that it's not networked and not running in the browser, making the attack surface a lot smaller.

Keypassxc having such features(and apparently the old network protocol was vulnerable lol) is for me a strike against it.

Re:MailChimp deleted my account with no warning on Thursday December 20, 2018 @12:43PM (#18727098)
That way of looking at it - that the company is lying but the individual is not - is fascinating to me.
Re:What I learned from reading a thousand emergency room bills on Thursday December 20, 2018 @06:00AM (#18723900)
>Price discovery requires pricing some people out of the market. Period.

A well working competitive market doesn't charge the maximum consumers can bear. It charges cost of service plus a profit margin.

Re:Why are amplitudes complex? on Thursday December 20, 2018 @04:14AM (#18723478)
Sure complex numbers are convenient for representing phase and amplitude.

BUT why is there a phase?

Re:Estimating Value of Facebook by Paying Users to Stop Using It on Thursday December 20, 2018 @04:05AM (#18723443)
First yes I think it does. Second this is more like paying people not to smoke a particular brand - they could change to another.
They are pressured by their payment providers. As for why they care I don't know.
