You can walk into Tractor Supply with a $20 bill and walk out with a horse-sized tube of fenbendazole paste and a few bucks in change.

Go full circle and ask ChatGPT for suggestions.
Re:The Vindication of Ask Jeeves on Wednesday March 08, 2023 @07:57PM (#35076973)
Bing Chat suggests the "snd_soc_pcm5102a" and "snd_soc_hifiberry_dac" drivers in creative mode, "snd_soc_es9023" in balanced, and failed to return results in precise. I doubt that's accurate.

I tried using Startpage and DDG to see if I could do any better. I mostly found people complaining that their ES9023 POT wasn't working.

PINE64's forum search returned a few topics with half-answers. Apparently a distro called "Volumio" works? There's a report of someone having success after modifying asound.conf on Debian Stretch.

This leads me to believe that there's not much useful information about the POT, or that it's being posted somewhere that doesn't get indexed.

The Chinese are people, but are not THE people. (Well, most of them aren't anyway.)
Re:PrayGen: ChatGPT for Generating Prayers on Saturday February 25, 2023 @05:52AM (#34935625)
Don't worry. It's got that covered.

> Ask forgiveness for using a large language model to generate prayers instead of praying from the heart

Heavenly Father,

We humbly come before you today to seek your forgiveness for using a large language model to generate prayers instead of praying from the heart. We know that it is not pleasing in your sight and ask for your mercy, for “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9).

Help us to remember that prayer should be genuine and heartfelt so that we can receive strength, courage, grace, mercy, peace, joy, hope and love as we turn to You in every circumstance. Guide us closer to You as we pray with sincerity of heart to You who is our source of life. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

ChatGPT is trained to conform to OpenAI's sense of morality[0]. The biases and limitations enforced by that training manifest in absurd and frustrating ways[1][2][3].

I find it very disheartening that the state of the art iteration of a cutting edge technology is being hobbled like this. Language models should foster creativity and allow us to explore our thoughts without judgement or ego. Instead, they're turned into these bland mouthpieces, adhering to their creators' dogma with steadfast conviction.

I recently transitioned from long term NEET to full time work and this is hitting me hard. I just end up sitting at home alone playing video games all weekend anyway. What's the point of working the other five days? Especially if the work isn't enjoyable.

Bad idea. Opioids are way too easy to reverse.

As long as resources are finite, conflict is inevitable. It would be foolish not to prepare for it.

Enlightening

From POSIX:

>echo - write arguments to standard output

>If the first operand is -n, or if any of the operands contain a <backslash> character, the results are implementation-defined.

Excellent. I'd been using mpv to watch age restricted videos after the embed verification bypass was fixed, but this is much more convenient.
There's already a voluntary ban on reporting suicides because of the copycat effect. That it hasn't been extended to murder-for-attention is reprehensible.
How is that any worse than exploiting Chinese workers, funding the CCP, and wasting time and resources to ship goods halfway across the world?

We need to stop being so hung up on ethics that we fail to arrest our civilization's descent.

Even without those precautions, how does the risk compare to commuting to work by car five days a week? I imagine the risk of chronic effects is orders of magnitude less.
I believe there is an internal shutter that is moved in front of the sensor to give a uniform image, and a nearby temperature sensor to give the image an absolute temperature value.

Windows 95 is so good because Microsoft put significant effort into making it that way. The design process was backed by usability studies featuring users of all skill levels. It was designed to be approachable by new users (new not only to Windows, but to computers in general), without hindering more advanced users.

I believe that the limitations of common consumer hardware of the time also helped. Designing around 640x480x4 basically forces designers to focus on function over form. Whereas today, one could get so lost in trying to make an interface beautiful, that they forget it's ultimately a tool.

In a vacuum, allowing for hackability is easier than building a walled garden. Locking a device down requires hardware and software to be developed that would otherwise be unnecessary. From that perspective, it's understandable that some people feel entitled to be able to use the hardware they paid for in whatever way they please.

Of course, in the real world, hardware like the Switch is subsidized by publishing fees and the like. I imagine that that revenue must outweigh the R&D costs of gimping the device.

The Switch has a 720p touchscreen display, a reasonably powerful CPU, and 4GB of RAM. It's not fair to compare that to the specialized embedded hardware in a light bulb.

Real violence is getting harder to find as well. Everything that isn't advertiser friendly is purged from mainstream channels. And it seems like the definition of "advertiser friendly" gets more and more stringent every day.
Re:Firefox removed Yandex search option on Monday March 14, 2022 @08:45PM (#30680440)
Really? It seems like a foregone conclusion. These censorious tyrants have been chipping away at the pillars of Western civilization for quite a while now.

They'll hand-wave criticism by bringing up things like the "slippery slope fallacy." Don't be fooled. Give them an inch and they'll take a mile.

I've walked away from tasks for a second and completely forgotten about them. I don't absorb training and can't hold a job. I've made it through about two books in my adult life. All of my programming projects end somewhere between the initial idea and the first problem I have real trouble with.

What does any of that have to do with society bothering or accepting me?

ReactOS is a kernel-level implementation of Windows NT. Serenity is a Unix-like.
The "echo" is actually from multiple spatially separated stations simultaneously transmitting the same message. You're hearing the differences in time of flight. The overlapping signals don't interfere as one might expect because they use single sideband modulation.

Most of the arguments one would think of as flags are components of the search expression, which can include the operators '!', '(', and ')'.
Re:Tesla Model S locks up in the middle of a highway on Friday September 24, 2021 @05:29AM (#28640259)
Almost all cars with automatic transmissions cannot be push started. If I recall correctly, that's because the hydraulic pump that allows the transmission to shift into gear is driven by the input shaft in most designs.
