Re:Ask HN: What skills to acquire in 2019? on Wednesday December 26, 2018 @07:59PM (#18766308)
This year I'm going to build a small CNC mill and learn to operate it correctly. That and dance cha to at least a competent social level.
Re:Convert a Bird Scooter to a personal one with $32 kit on Tuesday December 04, 2018 @08:43PM (#18605126)
I must admit I had a little chuckle. I suppose there is a term for it when the correct answer is right there on the tip of your tounge but you just can't quite put pen to paper.
Do you mean one of those things they write on paper slips when you say check? Which country are you from?
Re:30 years later, QBasic is still the best on Sunday May 27, 2018 @02:36AM (#17165784)
When I was about 10 there was nothing I wanted more than to have a program that took minutes to build into an .EXE. In my mind that implied complexity and 'real' programming. Of course, as a professional 30 years later, waiting for compilers is something I could do without.
Re:A Linguist Explains Why 'Laurel' Sounds Like 'Yanny' on Thursday May 17, 2018 @01:18AM (#17088922)
I never hear yanny. I do however hear a drunk guy slurring Gary, which sounds like yarry, though.

Yes, very important when working on decades old Japanese motorcycles. Hozan make some nice sets if anybody is looking.
Re:California's other drought: a major earthquake is overdue on Wednesday March 14, 2018 @06:08PM (#16588766)
I had to duck a few LCDs and drop ceiling tiles in the 2011 Christchurch earthquake, 60 seconds would've been handy to hide under my desk.
Re:Learning to program is getting harder on Friday February 16, 2018 @08:49PM (#16398352)
Yep you got it. My first actual PCs (I don't count the Apricot PCs haha) were DOS 3.3, and I still remember the transition away from 33MB partitions although it's so long ago I can't remember if that came in with DOS 4.0 (abort abort!) or 5. I thought I was so cool having a PC with drives A B C D E F G H I.

I've never met a good programmer that wasn't (at least initially) self taught. Presumably they exist, but I've never met one.

I do agree though, I find when I'm teaching my juniors I sometimes have to give a little history lesson as part of it (things like why 8.3 filenames).

I mean free as in if I chop my arm off, no worries, no bills, I get fixed up. I mean free as in my wife is pregnant, no worries, no bills, my baby is delivered in a hospital. I mean free as in my kids gets cancer, no worries, no bills, they get chemo or whatever they need. I mean never going into debt because I need my life saved. I mean never not going to the doctor because it'll ruin me. I mean everyone pays consumption tax here, nobody gets a free ride, and everyone gets looked after. I mean not looking down on another country because they're not perfect when your country isn't either.
Pssst, I heard the last country to land people there laughable still hasn't even made it to the level of free health care for all! They still might, of course, it's not like any of these goals are mutually exclusive.
