News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

nokeya

Microsoft is to blame for this mess. Everything was ok before their “modern sleep” - C-states and stuff. Everything except memory sleeps. But no, they wanted to be like Apple. And, as always, they did it in most horrible way.

Because of course it does. You are fighting the wrong side, they should proof they are good, not you defend them.

This is awesome and horrendous at the same time.
First thought after reading “3D map of your codebase” was that now we will be able to code in Johnny Mnemonic style :D
You can buy them overseas from online secondhand stores like mandarake and play on your switch, because there is no region lock. Interface will still be in Japanese, but it is pretty obvious what to to and how.
That “install as app” pop up after the first station is clearly unnecessary and utilises a dark pattern - “not now” button is painted like it is disabled. Please don’t do like that.

And then government will declare this printer illegal because of no yellow dots.
Re:The new HTTP QUERY method explained on Tuesday June 23, 2026 @04:25AM (#48641986)
If it needs so much explanation and discussion, maybe it is not a great idea after all?
The problem is that it does not. At all.

It was wintel (windows + intel) before. This will be what? Windia? Wintek?
Re:Toshifumi Suzuki, founder of 7/11 Japan, has died on Tuesday May 26, 2026 @04:50AM (#48276962)
And now compare not the numbers, but what these countries actually produce, in global sense. Japan produces cars, electronics, medical and precision stuff, cultural exports. And what do Croatia produce? Not even speaking about almost dying Latvia and Lithuania.

Ok, and?
HTTP error 451 for accessing this site outside of US, meh.
Re:Google Search as you know it is over on Tuesday May 19, 2026 @03:37PM (#48198331)
They enabled this for me several days ago, and is awful. I don’t need slop explaining me the name of the API variable I am searching for, I need links to docs with possible values! And if you try to ask in a more “human” language - it will hallucinate like hell. Fortunately, I found that search from address bar still gets me into usual search.
So, they are not soo greedy, but greedy enough to not make it an OLED and later add a separate pricier OLED version.
Really? They released a second generation with screen being worse than installed in the first generation (even non-oled version)?

We have two switches in our family, both first gen, one usual and one oled. Standalone, usual screen is bearable, compared to oled it is quite bad, but if the new screen is even worse?? I can’t find any explanation for this except of greediness from Nintendo

I’m quite suspicious that they do that not because they understood or learned something, but because China requires physical buttons starting next year. And they simply don’t want to lose one of their biggest markets.

Serverless is down because servers are down. What an irony.

Axis, Hanwha - not cheap but good and reliable

If Chinese brands don’t scare you: Hikvision is very good allarounder, Milesight, Uniview (UNV), Vivotek - good too

Dahua cheap but still usable

All other - don’t even bother

Thank you for explaining my thoughts clearer than I was able to do. Exactly.
My point is we have to adapt, whether we like it or not.
Aren’t we, by the historical earth standards, in the multi-millennia ice age right now? And this ice age is coming to its end. And this is perfectly ok for the planet, it doesn’t give a single fck about us mere humans.
Not only 5 year old PCs are still actual, but even 10 year old machines are still lot in use. Because there are already enough performance for everyday tasks for majority of tasks - videos, emails, messengers, etc. But this is a problem for Microsoft and computer manufacturers, they are overstocked and have to convince users somehow to upgrade even if there is no reason to do so.
“Days instead of weeks on the mountain foot” - that’s the crucial point. Less time -> less money spent on accommodation, supplies, personnel there. Obviously they don’t want to lose income.
There is an independent C++ library by Samsung called rlottie: https://github.com/Samsung/rlottie

Telegram uses it for animated stickers, Samsung itself uses it for icons on their smart watches

We are doooooomed!
