Friday I had to waste precious pub time listening to my excited co-worker wax poetic about the camera on his new Huawei phone and it’s night vision capabilities. So this article was timely for me.

GPS and other precision guidance systems do help to save civilian casualties by allowing militaries to use smaller and fewer explosives. The designers of GPS have probably saved more lives than any doctors. I want to live in a world without human violence but creating a world like that doesn’t involve banning technology, it requires political action.

Canadians have a TN visa option which is much simpler to get than H1B. There is no quota limit.

Many years ago I worked on an SMSC. SMS are sent over the same data channels as phone signalling (call setup etc.) using SS7 protocol stack. The SS7 protocol physical layers used fixed size data packets of around 256 bytes, for example on T1 data channels. On top of that you need routing info such as addressing in MTP, TCAP to get the packet to the correct mobile switching center. Then GSM or IS-41 MAP to route to the device. Finally the sms bearer encoding needs some extra bytes for thing like delivery reports and source phone number. This left 160 bytes free.
