Re:Why I am learning category theory on Wednesday November 30, 2022 @07:44PM (#33810571)
Why is Elm mentioned specifically. As far as I know (state, action) => state is just a function without side effects?
Re:Why I am learning category theory on Wednesday November 30, 2022 @04:05PM (#33807671)
Isn't Redux only used when the app becomes too complex with really complex state?

Will it make you a better React dev tho?

Why, what's so good about it?
Re:Why the Math Stack Exchange is a waste of time? (2017) [pdf] on Saturday October 29, 2022 @10:21AM (#33384245)
My experience has been diametrically opposite to this. I've found Stack Exchange communities to be amazing communities to ask deep questions, practice technical writing and even exercise critical thinking skills.

On the Math Exchange I've had nothing but positive experience. The thing to do is first to struggle a bit with the problem and formulate a good question. Asking good question is an incredibly valuable skill. The questions which get treated bad are usually either poorly written and/or the person asking it clearly didn't even spend the bare minimum trying to solve it.

Here are some tips to get your questions answered and upvoted:

1) Spend some time on the problem

2) Describe what you've tried and why according to you that doesn't work or you don't understand it

3) Write in clear language and don't make obvious grammar mistakes

Yay, more code repos that will rot somewhere by engineers who thought they were "changing the world and making an impact".
Re:My next Mac might be the last on Monday October 24, 2022 @10:57PM (#33325633)
The UI is bad, 7 years of OS updates and the older versions of the Mac still feel better. It's just glitz on top of very bad ideas.
Re:My next Mac might be the last on Monday October 24, 2022 @10:56PM (#33325626)
This M1 Mac Air will definitely be my last. I am switching to Windows laptop soon. The thing is that Macs were head and shoulders above the competition and I just don't see it anymore. It's becoming an isolated ecosystem and the competition is just more than keeping up even with the M1.

I started using Macs in 2015 roughly and at that time they were destroying the competition. The retina display sucks. It doesn't feel natural to me.

Re:Ask HN: If you could teach a course, what would it be? on Monday October 24, 2022 @11:42AM (#33318162)
Heard a programmer recently how open source programmers were being exploited by corpos that used their enthusiasm for the craft.
Re:Ask HN: If you could teach a course, what would it be? on Monday October 24, 2022 @07:08AM (#33315164)
Is this that common? xD

Re:Just for Fun. No, really. on Tuesday October 18, 2022 @09:33PM (#33256335)
What would my interviewer think if I answered that question with pussy and money tho?
Re:Show HN: I made an Aesthetic Typing app on Monday October 17, 2022 @08:58AM (#33232821)
This is really awesome.
Re:Ask HN: Best programming books in the last couple of years? on Thursday October 13, 2022 @12:34PM (#33193319)
useless everywhere basically. No sane person would sit down and read TAOCP.

Re:The case for ending calculus requirements for science majors on Sunday September 18, 2022 @10:02AM (#32887641)
Yeah tbh undergraduate calculus courses are really not that difficult.

I can help her out. ; )
Re:CS 168: The Modern Algorithmic Toolbox on Saturday September 10, 2022 @04:53PM (#32794497)
Is this now a trivial problem because of Deep Learning?
Come on, live a little. A small vacation of 6 months to Bora Bora never ruined a company! Enjoy. Life is short. Carpe diem.
Re:Ask HN: Who is hiring? (September 2022) on Friday September 09, 2022 @06:04AM (#32777401)
US only?
Lol, that's a function that returns a pointer to a struct.
Re:Show HN: Alumina Programming Language on Saturday September 03, 2022 @03:24PM (#32705182)
New language posts have to stop. There are tons of other CS topics to talk about but instead LIPSs ()()()()((((())))) and random langs taka the spotlight on HN.
Re:Ask HN: Who is hiring? (September 2022) on Thursday September 01, 2022 @01:54PM (#32680332)
Are you hiring juniors?
Re:The case for language agnostic hiring on Thursday September 01, 2022 @09:54AM (#32676235)
Any decent CS degree properly exposes students to functional, low-level programming and functional programming.

Even if they didn't, a strong programmer will pick up them up in an afternoon. Ditect memory manipulation is just not that hard.

Re:134.5 kg Concrete Bike [video] on Wednesday August 31, 2022 @08:19PM (#32670106)
This has got to be the dumbest idea that I have ever heard of.
I want to hear you own arguments, don't let someone else do the thinking for you!

I think you're just scared, if not email me. : )

No problem, here's my email: [email protected].

If you are so sure then let's discuss it.

There is simply put no evidence for the existence of God. Neither philosophically nor rationally.

And it's not a straw man argument. God in Islam cares about foreskins and sex and if you disbelieve in him he sends you to hell for eternity.

Don't send videos tell me your arguments, you can speak for yourself.

Yes yes and sperm comes from between backbone and ribs.
And what's the religious viewpoint?

Some omnipotent being did it and he cares about the sexual life of humans?!

That's bizarre as well, better to just say that at this point we don't know.
