News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

ninjazee124

This is pretty common stuff I saw with just even regular startups with remote applicants -- I take their claim that it was NK hacker with a grain of salt.

Re:BazelCon 2024 Recap on Wednesday October 23, 2024 @04:07PM (#41928840)
We tried Bazel for a java monorepo. Not having good IDE support was a deal-breaker because it would complicate things for onboarding and junior devs

I am in awe of people who have the time for such projects!

End of an era. One of the first IM apps I used in my early days of the internet.
I have been building with Spring for over a decade. You won't regret it. It's just stable, and works and something you use to build things that last.

My case was very similar, I switched jobs in about 2 months from getting the GC. I recently got my citizenship, and it was no problem at all.
Window shades that go down at sunset automatically. Sounds like an easy manual task, but makes a big difference when automated, especially if you have many windows.
Is Redis web-scale?
http://vetr.com/ - crowdsourced stock ratings.

Think of it as the yelp of the stock market, we get people to add projections on where a stock is headed and calculate a five-point star rating and a consensus target price.

502, how ironic.
Been there, done that. I switched from Java to Scala and Play. Back to Java 8 and Spring MVC and couldn't be happier to be back.
Re:An Opinionated Guide to Modern Java Development, Part 1 on Thursday May 01, 2014 @06:56PM (#7683167)
I went from Java to Scala and am back to Java 8, and couldn't be happier with my choice. We are also using the latest Spring 4 framework which plays well with Java 8.

A lot of the Spring + Java haters haven't really looked at all the improvements have happened to both Spring and Java recently, either that or they just like to bounce off what they read online without any actual experience.

It's a solid stack for a backend, and I have built the whole platform on in without a hitch.

Java is here to stay. We are a small startup, but I am building our entire backend in Java 8.
Re:Will Java 8 Kill Scala? on Sunday April 06, 2014 @11:09PM (#7544414)
The backend stack is entirely Java 8 built on top of Spring 4 eco system.
Re:Xtend – Modernized Java on Friday April 04, 2014 @10:41AM (#7531658)
Better to use Java 8 with Lombok extensions.
Re:Will Java 8 Kill Scala? on Thursday March 27, 2014 @09:15AM (#7480142)
I used Scala at my previous startup, but for my new startup I decided to build the backend in Java 8. Biggest reasons were the tooling/IDE is just miserable in Scala and the lack of developers in the market. I am really happy with my decision to build our backend with Java 8, quite a joy to write lambda expressions and have the tooling of Java.

Pretty sure I won't be going back to Scala.

To answer my own question, looks like they are using three.js as described here to load the Collada/DAE file.

Anyone know how they built their 3D graphic page?

http://images.businessweek.com/graphics/airbus-a350-3d-graph...

How did they go from the Trimble/Sketchup A350 model to showing the model in the browser in "3D"?

Re:IntelliJ IDEA 13 is Released on Tuesday December 03, 2013 @11:04AM (#6841042)
Switched from Eclipse to IntelliJ for Java development about a year back and never looked back. It's amazing how good the tooling and autocomplete is. It's worth every dollar!

I just can't fathom how something so ridiculous could pass so many engineers at LinkedIn, without raising flags on how bad this is. The moment I saw the word "proxy" I cringed!
Re:PostgreSQL Studio on Wednesday October 02, 2013 @07:09PM (#6486055)
They should have wrapped it with jetty-runner or something that makes it easy to run it without having to fire up Tomcat.
Sounds like a PR stunt, why else would he care so much to prove that G+ is not a ghost town? What next, Myspace?
