Re:How Intelligent Are Cats? (2004) on Sunday April 10, 2022 @01:45PM (#30979600)
I am firmly convinced that all technology which you (and people who think like you) acquired after making contact with Western Civilization needs to be confiscated from you. Cannibals should have no rights.

The way things stand, what they are fighting for is more like a "non-dystopia." A utopia would actually need to lead somewhere new... but at the moment the powers that be have tried absolutely EVERYTHING to stay in power and they ran out of options. This is their last bet (or rather - their last bluff - as I don't think they will make good on their promises).

You can look at the state-financed "art programs" in ex-communist countries in Central and Eastern Europe. As artists in these countries were left with nothing to "propagandize" for (their sole qualification, by design) they slowly mutated into non-productive radical leftism and work-for-hire for anybody willing to invest into non-beauty. I hope that Ireland will fare better, although in the last few years their foreign policy seems to have been re-focused onto a domain that also involves LGBT type outbursts.

I thought that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and doesn't need to be forced down the throats of uncircumcised peasants.
Sounds like it's a gateway drug to demon possession (or at least descriptions of it -- in case of an atheist reading).

It's because students are being admitted to universities (including ivy league ones) based on informal political quotas. Once inside they don't learn per se but are indoctrinated with the virtues of diversity and tolerance. Nobody should be amazed that when they graduate, they write like a 12 year old: that was the whole point.

And how many "few locals" is enough for prejudice to turn into statistic?

Culture is not a source of intelligence.

Intelligence is something you are born with, just like height or skin color.

I also do not understand who you refer to when you say "we." Well, I have a pretty good idea, but as opposed to "you," I prefer not to do mindless generalizations.

I get what you are saying but those countries were more like colonies than a part of Russia. My opinion is that they should have been left alone, like every country should, especially in that time when technology wasn't so hazardous and so widespread.

The fact that you managed to understand that I decry the collapse of the Soviet Union when my post said the exact opposite, namely that I can't see how in China an event like that could take place -- and this was the foundation on which I based my affirmation of Russians having a soul -- tells me that your agenda stands firmly on the side of the CCP, in detriment of everybody else. Quite sad, really.

When that political party is set on dictating not only how every citizen but how every ethnic should behave... well...
Why would we read it? It's just a copy of our data + some propaganda.
I come from an ex-communist country. So this is probably (hopefully) the only moment my talent of spotting this kind of shit is useful. The thing is that whatever bad behavior the USA committed in the past, and then anxiously analyzed and mulled over for decades... the Chinese are doing day by day, routinely, without ANY remorse or second thought. With the Russians it was different. Sorry to say this, but compared to the Chinese, they had soul. I do not foresee anything like the collapse of the Soviet Union in China. They are too "rational" for it. Not to mention their numbers. Our only hope is Jesus Christ. US and China at war? I don't know. China at war? By their logic of expansion, I'm afraid it is guaranteed.
If Russia gave it to them via China which made it from research stolen from the USA, I wouldn't call it "funny." I would call it "saving half a face, just in case."
Not to mention that if they find a cure before the world they will mark it as "strategical advantage" and not shared because it's of "national interest." At least based on their past history.
I know I might be the weirdo here for browsing 4chon, but for the last few months I have seen a huge incursion of "PRC-affiliated"... "contributions"... and not only to high traffic and high turnover boards but even to niche ones. On boards using flags, these "contributions" come mainly from Canada, USA, and France.

Although I am secretly grateful for this spam, as it cut down my time spent there from 3-4 hours a week to 3-4 hours a month, it's still disconcerting as they are highly organized and apparently take huge pleasure in bludgeoning seals and other harmless creatures. Heck, I am amazed that the boards were clean even after the US Elections, the shutdown of 8chon and other such events.

With every new "takedown" please refer back to past reinstatements by Youtube. That's all I can contribute from my experience. Good luck!
Re:Making Emacs Popular Again on Thursday May 07, 2020 @04:11PM (#23107675)
Yes, that's why it's fishy that GIMP doesn't emulate the Photoshop shortcuts/menu structure.

But any arguments regarding word editing in latex markup I won't accept.

Re:Making Emacs Popular Again on Thursday May 07, 2020 @04:00PM (#23107534)
If they could make some kind of a visual layer that makes it look like Word and Photoshop (not in the same time, I'm being realistic here), their name would be remembered in eternity.

Of course, emulating the shortcuts & functionality of Word and Photoshop shouldn't be considered a problem, we are talking Emacs here after all...

First of all, they won't get more popular than they are now. Second, I doubt any person who uses said software for professional or amateur reasons has the skills or time to cobble it together. Because they either do one thing or the other.

GIMP: "Groups of artists." See, there's your problem. As much as I despise Steve Jobs, I finally came to understand why he was so appreciated.

Libreoffice: What you said doesn't explain why Apache OpenOffice is still better. I do not expect an MS Office clone (although an MS Word clone would be welcome) but I do expect those writing the software to check out MS Word and point out why it is better... and then slowly but surely move in that direction, not away from it.

systemd: You can't compare an init system, which has the role of starting daemons and whatnot, to a kernel which is basically hardware drivers.

As for your perspective... if you are working for 0$ do not complain about lack of resources. You said it yourself, didn't you?

This is the case with most of open source software. Three notable cases:

1. GIMP, which is unusable to such a degree that somebody actually decided to make a version with a decent interface, called GIMPshop... what happened to GIMPshop you can only guess [1].

2. LibreOffice which is much much worse interface-wise than Apache OpenOffice, although hyper-aggressively promoted. That being said, neither of them are even remotely capable of licking the knee of Microsoft Office.

3. systemd, which "suddenly" found its way in all distributions, even though it goes against everything that GNU/Linux or Unix-like philosophy represents.

All this makes me think that unusable interfaces are an intentional "feature" of "some" software.
