It's just overused and cliche now

You know the answer is yes. You also know they can, and did, choose not to do that. If you have to object actually object.
That's changed a bit in the last few years! I'm in somewhat rural Oregon (The Dalles) and in practice none of our gas stations really do full service anymore. Gas prices didn't go down at all
Re:Kcgi – minimal CGI and FastCGI library for C/C++ on Thursday October 15, 2026 @05:14PM (#50110346)
The assumptions I'm making here:

* Most sites/projects are internal to an organization

* Most public facing websites/apps/projects won't be successful

Re:Kcgi – minimal CGI and FastCGI library for C/C++ on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @05:13AM (#50084648)
Most people don't need to care about that. If you're writing something that's gonna be used by a fixed number of real humans a few times (or a even a few 1000) times a day the overhead isn't gonna matter

I move my whole hand around a lot, both by rotating at the wrist and moving at the elbow level.

Caps Lock remapped to control. By using a keyboard where I can remap keys at the firmware level whenever possible, and in the OS when not

Ctrl-C doing different things come from different os/software lineages

Re:The Forgetful CPU (Linux on M4) on Saturday October 03, 2026 @02:12AM (#49941758)
I will deal with everything I dislike about MacOS for laptops that never cook my lap and never, ever, ever randomly turn on full power while in my bag
I've been doing Linux sys-admin work for 10+ years. Used to be I could read the full report on what ever vulnerabilities came out and triage which servers needed to be updated now and which could wait. A few years ago notifications started having so many it would take more time/effort to read everything than it would to patch everything. With this notification there's even ten times more...
Re:RIP, vector database on Thursday October 01, 2026 @08:47PM (#49928695)
I kept asking myself "is this ai written" while reading it to. Nothing to do wit h the em dashes. Phrasing like: > RIP, primary vector index. > The solution to these problems is simple: don't key on the ANN address. That is precisely the change turbopuffer v3 makes. As you can imagine, it is not a trivial change."

Cute heading, followed by wordy opening sentence that feels like it's repeating stuff even when it's not

I have a silhouette cameo 4 I'm pretty happy with. Silhouette studio works, it doesn't handle svgs very well so when importing I tend to render svgs as a black bitmap and then trace that in silhouette studio. Being able to print registration marks and have the cutter align itself against those is invaluable. I've done clones of paper craft kits, perfectly cut out iron on transfers forct shirts, 3d trading card art, and trading card proxies on mine
Re:GIMP Development Update on Monday August 17, 2026 @07:35AM (#49329283)
Calling people who are okay with different programs having different behavior _bootlickers_ is obnoxious
> so it took a few Amazon returns until I found the right one

This a pet peeve of mine. If you buy the wrong $2 part don't return it. If you don't eat the loss the seller will and the part will wind up in the landfill.

Are you sure? I'm pretty sure .deb and .rpm packages both allow that

Re:Flatpak Will Depend on Systemd on Tuesday May 26, 2026 @06:26AM (#48277667)
People seem to think it tries and do too much. As a sysadmin I love systemd, especially way more than the init scripts it replaced
Re:Flatpak Will Depend on Systemd on Tuesday May 26, 2026 @06:23AM (#48277647)
> From what I understand from Vovk, they were intending to be “super considerate” of distributions and people not using systemd, which I take to mean we’d eventually end up in a situation very similar to systemd-logind, which was extracted from systemd into a separate daemon, elogind, so that distributions using other init systems could still make use of desktop environments depending on systemd-logind
> The question is...why do you care that much?

Not the OP, but I support Ubuntu as desktop and server OS for an engineering collage and have for 10ish years. Some LTS upgrades don't require many changes (mostly minor package name changes) and some take months of work to get rolled out (mostly for workstations, the server upgrades are usually quick.). Not everything gets upgraded every new OS release. If we had to upgrade everything every 6-12 months it would eat up a significant amount of time for our small team.

Most people have no safety net and if the money stops rolling in their life is effectively ruined for several years

$$$$$ for supplies, you could probably take up oil painting for cheaper.

It "only" doubles performance so the overheads aren't that heavy
