I know of some laboratories where they have a host of old machines for software to support some critical instruments that only runs off a dongle or an ISA card and it still does accurate work.
Not quite the biggest steam locomotive, the DM&IR Yellowstone class outranked them in many measures.

Re:Soviet Maps on Tuesday September 16, 2025 @09:42PM (#45270577)
I have a set of 1980’s Soviet maps of the state of Colorado, and they are oddly accurate for the railroads.

Conversely, when my parents visited Moscow in 1975, many locals offered to trade goods to get their Finnish tourist map of Moscow; since it was more detailed than the local maps they had access to.

The Big U has it’s faults; but is still an insightful look at the weird people and organizations within any large university.
Re:Ask HN: What's the best car without undesirable features? on Wednesday January 17, 2024 @10:06PM (#39037144)
2016 or earlier subaru outback
The hobby is changing, more people build modules or small shelf layouts that emphasize a particular scene or prototype behavior.

The large layouts are less often built, due mostly to the amount of maintenance needed.

Most young enthusiasts don’t show up at the traditional clubs or shows, there are quite a few nice private forums out there for younger work.

It's still used when you need accurate energy transfer. Plenty in real lighting software (Dialux, Agi32). But there are faster methods if you just want it to look good.

I worked with Ian on lighting tools, and he delighted in sharing his knowledge of lighting, software, and engineering.

Here is the book with a copy of the included source code. https://www.gully.org/uxb/Ashdown_Radiosity.zip

Re:Ask HN: Is Unlimited PTO a Scam on Sunday November 19, 2023 @12:37PM (#38335194)
This is exactly it. Cash value needs to be available to pay out if it has a value. With unlimited, that is zero.
Easier would be to pick a standard monochromatic or RGB sources (no broad spectrum phosphors), and have them filter for those frequencies.
You can usually ask the utility to add a light shield. Just about every model can take one to reduce glaring sideways light.

Freezer compressors are sized for simply keeping the contents cold of their well insulated box. Trying to run an external load will likely overload it’s capacity.

Re:Linode rebranded as Akamai’s cloud computing services on Tuesday February 14, 2023 @10:33PM (#34799761)
I’ve had an account and small mail server on Linode for almost 19 years, and it has done all I need.

* run reliably * static IP that other mail servers trust * staff who are willing to reach out to other larger mail providers if a linode ip range it is in got blocked.

If they called it a Vancouver roll, nobody could afford one.
To be fair, that had plenty of rare earth metals in it.
Re:How Logan Paul Scammed People Out of Millions on Sunday December 18, 2022 @12:49PM (#34040167)
I think for many people, they do not understand exactly how people make money on investments, and how they are supposed to feed back into the economy. Everybody wants 100x returns like the early internet produced from communication changes. But it is actually rare event.

Re:Ask HN: How innovative is the hydrogen industry? on Tuesday November 29, 2022 @02:30PM (#33792061)
Hydrogen is a very hard gas to use. If you talk to anyone who has shipped products using it (most likely in military/space applications), the fundamental behaviors of it in materials science are very difficult. It’ll make your nice fancy metal pipes flake apart. Good luck with any sort of gaskets. Being the smallest molecule means it will escape in a moment’s notice.
Re:Nobody wants touch-screen glove box latches on Sunday October 30, 2022 @01:07AM (#33391280)
This is a great feature for a leased car, or a car rented out through the manufacturer. This is not for someone who owns the car.

Car companies, like software companies, want to go to a subscription model.

No CAD formats. Too bad most are proprietary.
Re:Ask HN: Microsoft SmartScreen is destroying our business on Friday September 30, 2022 @01:31PM (#33037913)
I encountered this, I had a cloud service that I had spun up services on with some DNS records pointing to, and then abandoned. The IP address was then used by malware, but because my DNS pointed to it, my whole domain got blacklisted.
