Have you seen code that has lasted for more than a few years that is able to handle all the changes around it without crashing? These days code has to be uodated every other hour just to give the apparence of stability.
its a very stupid mechanism if you want to create a scallop that lasts 500 million years surviving every possible change in the environment through that period.
4400 years ago! Check whats happening in the rest of the world and its pretty primitive in comparision.
Wasnt the Oppenheimer story basically that?
Is there some magical way to avoid fixing pdf parsing code every 2-3 months when ever something small changes? And where the list of small things that change is quite large and random. It has become a full time job for some people I work with - decoding corporate/govt pdfs. They could be spending their time on more useful stuff instead of header format changed, data format changed, location moved etc etc so parser crashed.
Being smarter doesnt matter. Weather, mold and covid dont have intelligence. You dont need intelligence to do damage. And whenever damage happen there is always a counter reaction. Just a few counter reactions have to work. This is why we didnt get wiped out by covid. Your argument seems to be because they dont have intelligence or we are super duper and so smart we should have wiped out all the mosquitos and ants but we havent. Intelligence doesnt mean control over everything going on in the universe. In fact we cant even survive without a whole bunch of microbes doing their own thing keeping the lights on. See Lynn Margulis - Intelligence is not the main show.
They are genuine just like hurricane warnings are genuine. But filtering out attention economy amplification layer and nonsense you land on a simple truth - no one controls weather systems yet the chimp troupe has survived them for thousands of years. The hurricane is already out of the box.
Confusion is because people are using the tool to get answers. Its how the edu systems trains most people in tool use. Heres a saw and here is a block of wood. Do x y z and you get a table. But if you are interested in why the saw looks like it does or the entire process behind generating that block of wood, or why x y z instead if a b c good luck to you using the current edu system. You have to live in an extremely rich country, with surplus resource to entertain those exploration. This has now changed.
The answer the tool gives has never been the real reward. The real reward is the path taken through a complex landscape to get to Maxwells Equations for example. At the end of that story what we get is not just the equation but a map of the landscape explored. That map has larger influence and value than the equations or answers themselves. Because all future exploration find it super useful.
People are just learning they can start asking for maps rather than answers.
One thing interesting about the Church is that Kings, Inquisitors, Revolutionaries, Govts etc have all tried to break the seal of confession for thousands od years now. The Church has some how managed to defend it by saying we believe path to repair/forgiveness involves creating and maintaining space where people can confess their sins. If a priest shares those sins with the state, everyone looses trust in the system and therefore breaking the seal over any sin is equal to dismantling the institution itself. This argument is literally the same structure used to defend attorney client confidentiality, psychiatrist patient confidentiality, corporations(telcos, email providers, platforms) from handing all data to the state.
But for all those cases the state has manahed to add huge amount of expceptions which it has not been aable to do with the Church. So the Churchs defense of the seal almost since 1215 has stood on a Belief. A story literally. That privacy is requires for repair.
Everyone else just hasnt come up with a good enough story.
Secondly what is stored in the head of a priest is usually forgotten cuz human memory is flaky and no one is writing anything down in a central db. So every now and then a state attack on the seal work but the everything then reliea on how reliable the memory of a single priest is. Its like a terrible distributed atorage system that is constantly forgetting things. Notice this is literally what large platforms have now built to defend privacy. Its called data minimization and costs a huge amount that they constantly cry about.
So its really funny how the church just stumbled into a solution that is cheap and hard to attack.
