The Amiga had support for this in circa 1985. You could play 2-player competitive lemmings which was a game like nothing I've seen since.
Re:Encrypted Client Hello – the last puzzle piece to privacy on Friday September 29, 2023 @06:13PM (#37710720)
Are you familiar with https://pi-hole.net/ ?

In my house I want DNS resolution to be performed by my own DNS resolver (https://github.com/NLnetLabs/unbound), after I block ad domains.

DoH circumvents that.

What? Capitalism is just fine without the artificial notion of copyright.

We can pay labourers for their time producing works. We don't need pay-per-copy.

> I don't base my choice on what media to absorb on superficial criteria like the country of origin

Other countries, including the USA, advertise and hype their own content. Your preferences are deeply influenced by the country of origin, because advertising works.

This is the deliberate reason why this TLD exists.

ICANN sold out the internet.

If my house had a pest problem, I would need to hire an expert in pest-control. I need to do that without being an expert myself. How should anyone be able to hire someone with more experience than themselves, in your view? I've sometimes had to 'hire my own boss'.

Maybe the criteria for the problem was less "did they check these boxes" and more "could they be a collaborative mentor willing to work with even the junior members on the team" in the context of designing a system.

Re:A Senior Engineer's Guide to the System Design Interview on Thursday March 02, 2023 @11:57PM (#35005993)
What's the sour taste -- what's the problem? Like, what's wrong with being interviewed by someone with less experience than you?
I know, but they don't. Outside of creative tech/art spheres, most people don't know much of anything about copyright, and telling them about "works expiring into the public domain" seems to violate their preconceived ideas about "property". It's tragic.
Most people I know don't have any concept that copyright does or should expire. They think if Disney makes a movie, it's Disney's movie forever.
You moved the goalpost from "in-depth conversation" to "order a cheese burger".

Adobe didn't create Flash. They bought out Macromedia.
Re:Duck typing is safe (2020) on Wednesday June 15, 2022 @01:27AM (#31749425)
With interface-typing, is there a right way to use the type system to declare "this function takes a (statically-certifiable) positive integer", not because it would fail to output a value for other numbers, but because its output would be incorrect or meaningless?

In scientific programming I've often wanted that, to push asserting particular constraints on values to the caller and/or the type system (whether that's compile-time or runtime type checks). But those constrained types would always match the interface of their unconstrained forms.

Re:Duck typing is safe (2020) on Wednesday June 15, 2022 @01:18AM (#31749389)
I'm not sure if this counts, but where I run into this sort of problem it's with conventional methods/operators, like `operator+`. I've had lots of bugs over the years from something doing string-concat or list-append instead of integer+, or vice-versas.
Using synthesizer hardware is a joy of an experience.
Could you share your model for this? How well does it work? I've considered doing the same.

The set of laptops I'm willing to run non-macOS on is limited by the set of laptops that have physical touchpad buttons, and that's a diminishingly small market segment :(

Love this!

Unrelated, but reminds me of another story featuring Chess and a Duck, and also relevant to the HN audience, which relates to the old videogame Battle Chess: https://bwiggs.com/notebook/queens-duck/

"selfie"? Video-calls are especially normalized now, since the pandemic. My family and friends use video-calls more often than voice-only calls now.
"Do not track me" IS the reasonable default expectation of user intent, to be fair.

Is that not ego? "We're better than a cab".

It would be ego-less if they called it CabApp or something.

Is it better to work at Google that has all your emails and search history?
Re:How to take credit for someone else's work on GitHub on Monday February 28, 2022 @04:35PM (#30505453)
Veering off topic but I absolutely hate that git requires you to have an "email address" (which cannot be empty and iirc must satisfy some regex criteria for a valid-looking address). A particular choice of user identifier or communication medium should not be hardcoded into the totally unrelated concern of source-control, IMO. Anonymous and non-email accounts should be first-class things. Instead of email maybe you'd want to have your public-key or something.

So, what are some decent alternatives?

Not the parent and not sure what s/he meant, but one could imagine software that borks when there are invalid (but nonobvious) characters in the filename, for example. Or file permissions or other extended filesystem attributes / resource forks if somehow you can get them delivered to the teacher that way.

Off-topic, but a bug I recently filed against Gmail:

I didn't want Gmail sending my full name to spammers, so I set my "display name" to just my email address. Thus when I send mail it's as: emailaddress <emailaddress> instead of MyRealName <emailaddress>.

However: when I flag something as spam, and Gmail (un)helpfully asks "Do you want to Unsubscribe & Mark as Spam?", when I say "yes unsubscribe", then -- somehow -- it sends that "Unsubscribe" email using my REAL NAME and not the display-name that is used for normal outbound mail. So in the end the behaviour is precisely backwards from what I would want.

My conclusion is to never ever use their "Unsusbcribe & mark as spam" anti-feature, instead I have to just mark anything I don't want as spam. Sigh.

I am getting a LOT of spam lately that annoyingly has false Unsubscribe links being used to collect data. The world is an evil place, and Gmail is not very helpful at blocking that.

Re:Tell HN: Full macOS reinstall because Apple ID on Saturday January 08, 2022 @11:58AM (#29853510)
In another light, automatic security updates also gives Apple the ability to lock you out of your computer.
Totally. I recently set up email on a few domains, backed by protonmail. Most of them work just fine. But my internationalized domain -- a .com in fact -- can't send email to Gmail, it is wholly rejected (I get a bounce-back failure notice, and the email never gets to even the recipient's spam folder).

There doesn't seem to be any way to tell Gmail that this email is fine, in fact it's coming from me.

Meanwhile countless horrific obvious spam gets through to my gmail just fine, much of it straight to my Inbox.

Re:Ask HN: Are there any 4K “dumb” televisions? on Monday November 29, 2021 @02:39PM (#29384220)
Yes, my TV is an LG 55" 4k dumb tv, and I love it. [1]

As I posted in another thread [2] a few days ago:

In Canada, LG's Business site has tvs branded as "Commercial Lite" that are all dumb, and work great. I have a 55" 4k and I enjoy its simple features and minimal remote-control. The only downsides IMO are that it only has two HDMI inputs and it doesn't do HDR. But for $1000 CAD four years ago, I'm still happy with it! I bought mine from CanadaComputers in-store. I don't know if it's as easy to get one nowadays, and I don't know if/how they sell them in the US.

Re:Explainer: .DS_Store Files on Saturday November 27, 2021 @10:23PM (#29365913)
So, why aren't these just stored in a db or some other directory of the OS? Instead of littering the userspace, and no fs-ext required. Also it sounds like these should be per-user-and-dir instead of just per-directory.
