Unless they're more interested in selling themselves (getting bought by one of the big smart glasses producers), then the webdesign would make sense, but I would never insinuate such a thing.
Agreed and the fanboying here is very out of character for HN, especially for a product that is likely to be delayed, will possibly never ship, will have an insane error rate if it ever ships. The usecases exist but are niche compared to typing when speech isn't an option or speaking when typing isn't convenient.

This is bait, with the goal of one of the smart glasses producers like Meta/Apple buying them out - that is, IF the tech can be improved enough after the pre-order money came in.

Re:American views of higher ed decline, once again on Friday October 30, 2026 @11:46AM (#50305599)
I think quite a bit of this phenomenon should be attributed to how young adults choose their education/career path. We're still in the "you can be whatever you want" and "if you make your passion into your work, you won't work a single day in your life" phase of the civilizational boom/bust cycle. Do high schoolers familiarize themselves with the supply and demand per field or do they wing that part/ignore it? For the fields that they feel pulled to, do they consider which people become financially well off after graduating in it? E.g. is it mainly authors, public speakers and professors, all basically in educational roles, making the field a government subsidized ponzi scheme? And do they on an ethical level consider which layer of society's hierarchy of needs their future expertise will feed into? As in, does the subject revolve around pleasure maxing in the upper echelons, or will it be useful for infrastructure, supply chains, defense, health,...

It seems that most people wing most of those points in a pursuit for what they think their life's passion to be at 18 years old. And neither do any governments in America or Europe really step in to incentivize socially benefitial choices, at least afaik, instead relying on the import of immigrant experts while at the same time experiencing massive brain drain to better off countries, e.g Germans moving to Switzerland en masse.

Re:Why Is This Fingerprinting Script Creating Bioweapons? on Friday October 30, 2026 @09:37AM (#50303703)
Even if the entire universe is a pseudo-brain, that doesn't mean you'll get to experience its conscious stream. I'm pretty sure that when a neuron in a brain dies, it's just dead. When a blood cell dies, it doesn't merge its consciousness with yours. When you and I die, we don't become the sun, nor the entire universe. At least I don't see a case for that at all. Imo we also know much more about consciousness than various philosophers are letting on. We know how to alter it (drugs, brain trauma), disable it (narcotics), and when those things happen naturally (senility, coma, sleep,...). We also know that split brain patients can develop two independently addressable selfs. It's just so obviously all about the brain. And the difficulty in defining consciousness is the same problem as defining what a complicated recursive function does, or if you will, defining the shape of a fractal. We just happen to be stable systems where part of our output feeds back into different input points, whether it's via the senses or inside the brain itself during thinking processes, or subconscious mechanisms that e.g. regulate hormones and vital organs. And those feedback loops/vortexes adapted evolutionary to yield results that are reality aligned enough to allow living organisms to navigate the world and recreate. To the question of why something can be experienced at all, I think that's like asking why a camera can take photos, or why chemical reactions exist. I guess some panpsychists would argue that THAT is the consciousness they mean, the sensing per se, the quantum of pain shooting through your nerves, or the signal that enters your brain after a single photon hit the retina just right. But the thing is, all kinds of such reactions also take place while you're in totally unconscious states like deep sleep, even absent-mindedness, and there remain unnoticed. Not to mention the constant biochemical reactions and highly organized changes going on inside the kidneys all the time, which we're never going to consciously tune into.

- If consciousness is as simple as sensing, why don't senses reliably lead to experience?

- If everything is conscious, why is there a disconnect between you and other things?

- If consciousness is fundamental, why can yours be deactivated?

It's irrelevant and I even explained why, just in case you'd be extra slow - yet here you are... Do you hate all LLMs? Do you hate technology? Do you fear change? Answer me. I'm like building a really strong case here!!
Re:Why Is This Fingerprinting Script Creating Bioweapons? on Thursday October 29, 2026 @06:24AM (#50286868)
The panpsychism fad seems like late Millennials'/Gen Z's cope with death. My greater point is that the same way you "are" your kidney today (or how you "are" the nearest mushroom, or microchip) is the same way you will be those things when you're dead: Utterly unnoticable, aka not at all. Not to mention that your memories will be wiped and that's not even controversial to a panpsychist. The problem is that panpsychists assert consciousness as something independent of memories, which is an indefensible position imo. A memory-less stream of impressions would be equivalent to death. Every moment would be your first, totally disconnected from all else, just to instantly vanish, never to be processed. That's the opposite of consciousness. Some kind of memory feedback/storage/processing is needed. And your ability to generate that lies in the shape of your brain, where it doesn't matter which electrons flow through it - you're not the specific electrons.

To equate irony with whatever is being satirized is blatant BS. If you think coming up with a single example proves a rule, you got it backwards.

Not only is this perfectly cyberpunk, but it's also weirdly hopeful with respect to the constant fight against AI crawlers and spam.

Re:Why Is This Fingerprinting Script Creating Bioweapons? on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @07:43PM (#50282521)
What is it like to be your left kidney? Your brain is connected to it through nerves, which ofc are conscious too in your worldview. If fungus and rocks are consciously linked, there should be a conscious link between your brain and your kidney. Yet, you have no idea what your kidney is experiencing every day, it certainly doesn't have any deep thoughts. And when the kidney gets taken out of your body, your conscious experience won't change. When your brain gets surgically or violently altered on the other hand...

Ironic speech is the main way people make jokes. Sure, ironic violence or something like that isn't a thing outside of WWE, but you shouldn't equate all "bad" behaviors.

In the past we could have said that we shouldn't expect an internet forum filter made of regex patterns to detect irony, but with LLM's as viable modding tools, I'm not sure that we shouldn't raise our standards...

It stands out as not too common a sight for books, so having two like this, more or less in the same style, on the same topic, both posted in this thread, is amusing. Maybe it's not that rare and I'm just not reading enough books from academics for whom a book is like a weird long paper with hand-holding for amateurs.
Re:I Don't Understand Quantum Physics (2018) on Saturday October 24, 2026 @09:12AM (#50220940)
Funny, both books scream default LaTeX
I like this theory too. Have the researches done an exhaustive search of highly scoring forum posts/reddit comments on that topic where one/a few might more or less give this exact answer? It's a basic mashup of nihilism and tribalism. Could AI synthesize this on its own? Yes. But did this sentiment get spammed throughout the 2010s even until today, meaning one or a couple humans could have come up with this answer and gained online approval for it? Absolutely, yes.

- To MOVE. It will likely become key to migrate to escape anarchy, race riots, and resource scarcity in the coming 15-50 years.

- To WANT. Most people don't even want things anymore. No hobbies, no goals. Attention sniped by algos and digital casinos (gaming, sports TV, anxiety-farming news).

- Mind-body coordination. Hobby sport, instrument.

- To not be a pushover.

- To make friends and a strong social circle. (Find common ground + empathize with his current problems = new friend)

- To id and reject poisons: Digital ones, foods, pharma, air quality, delusions,...

- To identify profit motives, machiavellianism and scams.

No matter what happens with AI and various doom bringers (demographics, climate, wars), these skills are evergreen and will likely create an advantage in survival and quality of life in any scenario.

Re:You could have invented transformers from memory on Saturday October 17, 2026 @07:58PM (#50136388)
>this paper

Nice Freudian slip. It's a blog post, not a paper. But it sure reads like a paper with its priority for reading speed over explanations that peers would find unnecessary. Except it's not written for peers. It adresses "You" the average reader. Unless "You" should mean "You, the person who took, cared about, and remembered various math classes in college," the article is good old clickbait.

Re:You could have invented transformers from memory on Saturday October 17, 2026 @07:50PM (#50136323)
The notation itself sucks and anyone taking pride in the ability to parse it is suffering from Stockholm syndrome. It's also one of the most annoying things to look up because search engines ignore the symbols. AI can explain it based on a screenshot now, but then we might as well go to AI for the entire thing and I'm starting to lean in that direction just to spite authors like OP. You're also connecting the syntax to understanding of the concepts which is the cherry on top of the math snobbery in this thread. If the blog had pseudo-code instead of 18th century scribbles, the HN crowd would at least not openly admit to any parts they don't understand, because it's implied that you can code when you post here - not so much that you give a flying f--- about math or really anything theoretical.
Re:You could have invented transformers from memory on Saturday October 17, 2026 @07:25PM (#50136144)
You can use math AND spend a few lines explaining the non-trivial syntax. It wouldn't be hard to do in this case and since the article is clearly meant for a large audience, it's a mistake from the author to gloss over various relevant definitions.
Re:You could have invented transformers from memory on Saturday October 17, 2026 @07:12PM (#50136037)
Agreed 100%. Mathematicians SUCK at writing. No matter how hard they try, they'll gloss over important non-trivial definitions. And I think this author has been trying... but seems to at the same time ignore the negative feedback like yet another academia snob.
Re:You could have invented transformers from memory on Saturday October 17, 2026 @07:06PM (#50135999)
Where he does NOT state what d_k or R^d_k mean and there are countless other examples. I happen to know because of classes I took, but it's insane and obnoxious to assume that every reader did or went through any higher education at all. This is not high school math. It's not terribly complicated either, making this situation even more frustrating. The author could have spent just a little extra effort explaining these things to multiply his target audience - but he's either incapable to think from a different POV or pandering to his peers by not wasting time defining "the obvious". Pure academic blindness on full display here.

Re:Show HN: How Random Are You? on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @01:35AM (#50082818)
Getting 0% isn't the goal though. You want to sit right at 11.11%, the blind guessing rate. If the prediction algo always predicts you wrong, it actually always "predicts" a number you won't guess. That too is a feat, reducing the pool of numbers you're going to choose from, therefore making you more predictable.
OP frankly can't be a serious dev with results like these. It's most likely slop. This looks like a CV project to impress some HR Karens with HN/github clout, to land a job as an AI meat proxy...
Aaaand the <pre> overflows horizontally on mobile. Tell me more about how you're a frontend dev and not a meat proxy for an AI slop machine.
