SMS based text only interface to search for library books, find the next train, and serve up the current week NFL schedule.

Originally a project to gain comfort with local LLMs + function calling. Currently, Ollama runs too slowly on Macbook Air M2.

SMS messaging handled through a cheap Android phone with TextBee.dev

TLDR; Knives made of shit are shit.
Building more units will increase supply, and placing limits on ownership will increase access. We can play all the angles to address housing supply.

Truthfully, over the course of a decade in tech, my experience working with this group has revealed certain cultural issues that make collaboration challenging.

These include poor language fluency, a large gap in power dynamics, insufficient attention to detail, a reactive approach to problem-solving, and a lack of motivation to question and improve upon the status quo.

EnergyMeterApp

Mobile app to help track performance of your solar panels. Supports SolarMeter/eGauge

It's hours of work - recompile, test, publish, test again once new versions hits the App Store. Upgrades and maintenance are a bigger time sink than most consider.

And this assumes there aren't any new issues that need fixing during the maintenance.

Refreshing! We need more developers with this mindset in the open source space. Users have become entirely unreasonable about their expectations.
Interesting! I looked at the demo, and found myself scrolling back and forth to see how the map/text changed. That was a valuable interaction for me.

Would love to see more demos about more popular world events.

The current demo is interesting, but its content sports an "odd" writing style. That is - until the reader realizes this is a translation from ancient Greek.

Today's entitlement is tomorrow's baseline expectation
Great thing about changing your password - that old one - also now "ancient and obsolete".
Business plain and simple. iOS lives, and dies by its already low market share of ~15% in the USA.

Making iMessage accessible on all platforms is a win for the end user, but almost surely results in existing iPhone users moving to Android. Kiss your already tiny, non-USA market goodbye with a move like this.

Recruiters on LinkedIn. Put some work into making your profile clean and concise along with good recommendations from past jobs.

Recruiters will sell you to the client, and help during rate negotiations. Good luck!

Another example of technology encouraging rampant consumption. Netflix, YouTube, HBO, etc. all wait less than 10 seconds to begin playing the next content.

I'm of the mind that this conditions society to constantly consume, and lowers the collective attention span.

Totally agree! We need to reorient our mindsets to sharing knowledge instead of locking it away under the banner of capitalism.
Feel like this is similar to a future self-driving Google car depositing me at my destination, but without telling me the address itself. We're here.

For me personally, this makes it official, I need to keep my guard up at all times when using anything Google.

Surprise, location tracking built in. Forgot to mention until 6 months later :)
Honestly, this seems beneficial to the musicians too. No longer worry about months/years of work going into an album that flops.

Be more iterative, experimental, and user driven by releasing an album's worth of content over the course of a few years. Seems like this reduces the risk for musicians publishing music that doesn't have an audience.

Yes, the economics of mobile apps really are that tough. The App Store has been around for over a decade now, and the "race to the bottom" has brought us the almost exclusive use of in-app purchases for monetizing apps.

Market is a big part of app success which is why we see games and companies with real budget making the $$ in the App Stores. Gotta market to those whales!

Furthermore, users expect a very high quality mobile app these days and often don't want to pay for features. Got a great app with a few amazing paid features? Expect some negative app reviews. Everyone, app developers included, expect amazing, free, mobile apps. It's unrealistic.

The "App Store" is empty of everyone, but large companies because mobile apps don't pay the bills.

Further, consumer expectations ruined the "App Store" when users began to expect high-quality, continuously updated apps for a one-time spend of $1.

Seems like a great way for this app to access your calendar data ;)

This is simply a case of a new system service of which there are many: Location, Photos, Calendar, etc. and now, Ultra Wideband (UWB), being rolled out without being tied into the existing permission model.

Re:The Allure of Small Towns for Big City Freelancers on Sunday July 22, 2018 @03:52PM (#17588571)
Great to hear about the happy coexistence of creatives and small town communities.

A few of the takeaways for me:

- General rule, a city can support 1 creative for every 1,000 people

- First mover advantage: small towns see creatives as novelty and are willing to assist.

- Benefits creatives moving to small town, but with an existing "big city" network

- Lowered cost of living means increased budgets for passion projects and less team dedicated to paid, professional work
