Hey, roads are the only thing we actually maintain
> I think if you ask ten people for their most controversial take on humanity, you will get ten totally different answers.
What if you asked them in a job interview, though? Or on a college application?
It has to supply "controversy" without giving Skynet or being racist or otherwise offensive. And the notion of "controversy" does implicitly prime it to discuss groupthink as well.
I think the leopard is software-as-automation, the breeder is the tech industry, and the exact semantics of "upset" are less important than schadenfreude at automation (and ensuing poverty) coming for the automator.
If I "go extinct", we both know that LLMs were the first and last nails in the coffin, and all of the nails in between.
In some hypothetical LLM-free world where Rust is displacing C++, hiring managers will still consider C++ experience a strong signal. As is, see you at the bread lines, comrade.
I'm in the DC area so I think it's more established players I'm looking at.
Yeah I think the Switch is popular with parents because it’s locked down and mostly just works.
Like if you want to do zero technical things and provide access to Minecraft without providing access to TikTok.
Yeah, I'm from Baltimore and our city government had the amount awarded in a lawsuit against opioid manufacturers reduced on appeal. Bummer.
Some of them, probably.
From the job postings, many of them seem to be physics simulations of various kinds where (in my experience) memory is allocated on the heap without a second thought. Well, there are second thoughts, but those second thoughts are about performance.
C++ seems alive and well in the defense space. The big contractors near me have tons of C++ job postings and I don't think I've seen a single one looking for Rust.
I see. Yeah it basically means ~7 YoE at my shop. Was 5, but we started delaying the promotion when we started belt-tightening in 23.
FWIW I'm at a Visual Studio shop and grep competency is pretty rare across the board.
Wait, someone who graduated since LLM-pocalypse has a senior title?
How do you arrive at that figure?
Yes, current polling basically indicates that the US electorate's overwhelming preference is "cheap gas".
I guess I don't understand what's supposedly been proven wrong?
There seem to be real concerns about whether the environment on Earth can sustain the impact of human society in its current form, and the population is an obvious lever to scale that impact.
I guess what's "surprising" is that birth rates are responding to the pressures I'm alluding to? Rather than just continuing runaway exponential expansion?
Perhaps the powers that be value this code more as a marketing tool for Huawei hardware than as a competitive advantage for selling inference.
Yeah, the first place my mind went was that this is an incredible on-boarding / marketing effort for the Huawei hardware.
As you intuited, I'm in the US.
It seems like our federal system is an obstacle. I'm in Maryland and a huge fraction of our biggest habitual traffic violators somehow get Virginia license plates.
> Do other countries not enforce fines?
Where I live (Baltimore, MD) the 10 vehicles with the most unpaid speeding tickets owe $81,000 between them. So you can push 10k in unpaid fines and remain on the road somehow.
“Lab” is a typo, it should be “lap”.
“Drop [an unwelcome surprise] in your lap” is a common English idiom.
1. Enforcement via traffic stop is extremely dangerous to everyone, cops included.
2. Automated enforcement is generally in the form of fines, which habitual violators ignore.
3. Confiscating vehicles as an escalating consequence of automated enforcement is so unpopular no one will even suggest it.
Make protecting the data centers expensive enough that it isn't cheaper?
Maybe it's regional, here in Baltimore it's still head and shoulders above.
Probably French style capital punishment
It is my impression that predatory car loans are basically ubiquitous
What kids games require double clicking? All the ones my wife finds are basically just mobile interfaces in the browser now
Double-click is difficult for my six-year-old, too.
Hmm.
I don’t think that actually explains the idea of a momentum density transport equation well at all.
Wouldn't it be Microsoft, since they rely on it for IntelliSense?
Yes, banning video games would probably be a win for society.
No, you probably won’t get anyone to admit to that here.
I use the KDE Plasma Fedora. It feels basically like Windows 10.
