Re:Richat Structure on Monday September 14, 2026 @01:53PM (#49701050)
Because from the ground it doesn't look like anything at all. I've been there, and without knowing where I was, I never would have guessed that I was inside the structure.
Srsly, all those neck beards who over simplify the problem with a flippant "don't use zoom", as if everyone has the luxury to skip every job interview and employer meeting that absolutely requires Zoom. I wish I could live in their world where every problem is solved by simply avoiding that problem.
Re:GMails custom domain "send as" discontinues January 2027 on Friday September 04, 2026 @01:47PM (#49567851)
Unless you have insider knowledge, this seems incredibly unlikely. Do you really think most GMail users even understand what this functionality is, much less use it? Google is many things, but they're not suicidal. I'm sure they did the math of the ongoing cost of supporting this functionality, versus whatever revenue people who care about it (and are still paying nothing) might bring in and realized its a cost savings for them. Losing 0.3% of all users is likely in their interests.
Re:GMails custom domain "send as" discontinues January 2027 on Friday September 04, 2026 @01:44PM (#49567801)
Their percentage of users who care about this feature is almost certainly fractions of a percentage.
Re:GMails custom domain "send as" discontinues January 2027 on Friday September 04, 2026 @01:42PM (#49567784)
Custom domains are still 3rd party.

How are you dealing with Fastmail's very low storage limits? Or are you paying for more (in which case, this isn't really an equivalent comparison).
No, you need a dutch bank account to pay plus a dutch address to receive the card. That's not going to work for 99% of visitors.
Most likely is hardware specific (some driver bug).
Curious what industry you work in where thin clients are still a thing. Most people are doing far more than ssh to some remote server.
Every time I'm forced to use MacOS again, its worse than the last time. Everything feels like a bolted on afterthought in an OS that forces Apple's opinions on everything. My productivtiy is ruined trying to do things the Apple way, instead of the way that works best for me.

No thanks, I'll stick with Linux, where I can tinker to have the OS work the way that is best for me, instead of what Apple thinks is best for me.

Re:Ask HN: How does one stay motivated to grind through LeetCode? on Wednesday November 12, 2025 @09:22PM (#45909709)
If solving leetcode is the only way to differentiate candidates, then its meaningless and is not accomplishing anything.

Only those who can't or won't invest time creating a meaningful interview process fall back to leetcode.

Re:Are YouTube channel RSS feeds now disabled? on Monday January 29, 2024 @02:52PM (#39181531)
Its definitely not just you ( https://www.reddit.com/r/rss/comments/1aduw8j/did_youtube_ki... ). I'm seeing the same thing for all the YT RSS feeds that I follow.
Irrelevant. You could have provided the link as a decent human being. Instead you decide to get into a petty argument?
Re:Starlink is now available across the United States on Monday October 02, 2023 @08:59PM (#37746597)
whatever elon says it is. or more accurately its inversely proportional to how oversold the region is. for much of the west coast, its very not good, especially at peak times.
Re:Starlink is now available across the United States on Monday October 02, 2023 @08:58PM (#37746590)
its already oversold in most parts of the US. peak perf is atrocious, with 100ms latency to the gateway.
Re:Ask HN: How to Exit FAANG? on Thursday February 16, 2023 @09:33PM (#34829967)
"close to top end restaurant" is purely subjective, and meaningless. Sorry, but Chicago doesn't have the diversity, quality or quantity of restuarants that NYC has. Not even remotely close. Chicago has certainly come a long way from the days of meat & potatoes, but its no where in the same league as NYC. And the fact that its easy to get reservations only further underscores how non-competitive Chicago is in that regard.
Re:Tiny Tiny RSS on Friday July 24, 2020 @09:21PM (#23946106)
Been using it for many years. Its a great self-hosted solution. The android app also works well.

But the lead developer is the worst stereotype for the egotistical god-complex. You have to worship the ground he walks on or he'll publicly attack & mock you. If you don't anticipate all of his questions in advance, he'll attack you with all sorts of infantile insults. He clearly feels that he is doing everyone the world's biggest favor by providing his software to the masses.

Re:Ask HN: What would you do with unmetered 10gig? on Wednesday June 10, 2020 @07:16PM (#23483295)
I don't think you fully grasp what operating an ISP is truly like outside of most developed, Western countries. Its absolutely nothing like what you're describing (and blatantly assuming).

For example, Brazil literally has thousands of tiny ISPs, each with, at most, a few hundred customers. They operate on the narrowest of margins, squeaking out close to no profits. They cut corners everywhere. They definitely do not have spare capacity, and over sell by insane percentages.

Another example, Mongolia, where there's basically just one ISP, the government owned Unitel. They have zero incentive to do anything extravagant, or even provide good service. Its a monopoly.

The cost of building out full capacity is very much still a limiting factor in many parts of the world.

Just because you've not seen something doesn't mean its not happened. The sad reality is that people all over the world have lived like this forever. Warzones, undeveloped countries, etc.

Afghanistan hasn't been safe or stable enough for literally decades. Syria has had a civil war for many years. Much of Mali has been under the grip of religious extremists for years.

NVIDIA has already communicated to many of their employees that they will be expected to return to the office once they are legally permitted to do so.
Herding people into open office spaces has already been proven to hurt productivity.
No one has the hospital capacity for COVID19 getting out of control. That's the fundamental reason for the quarantines everywhere.
Re:3M Response to Defense Production Act Order on Friday April 03, 2020 @10:32PM (#22775734)
What's the actual penalty if they refuse?
The numbers vary so much because they're (nearly) all fabricated by whomever was interviewed. The Ethiopian government is notoriously corrupt. Lots of talking heads who contribute little. They're just trying to one up each other with fabricated statistics.
They didn't mention that most schools in Ethiopia are half day by default (because they lack sufficient teachers & school rooms to educate all the children for a full day). So in reality, most children wouldn't have been in school for half the day regardless.
Re:Oracle Dyn DNS Services Shutting Down in 2020 on Tuesday June 25, 2019 @08:26PM (#20280756)
That doesn't give me good vibes. They're surely going to attempt to monetize it at some point. What's the benefit for digitalocean to providing a 'free' service?
Its a chicken & egg scenario. Most folks are not going to want to move there because there's not many tech opportunities, and there aren't many opportunities because no one is ready to move there.

What else is there in terms of opportunities in the tech industry in Helena besides your new ISP?
