Re:The lazy mysticism of Alan Watts on Saturday October 29, 2022 @06:37PM (#33388654)
At some point I realized his "solution" to philosophical problems was always to get really vague and hand-wavey
Re:You can't buy a Raspberry Pi right now on Monday October 03, 2022 @04:59PM (#33073624)
if broadcom were supplying at below cost as a marketing expenditure it would explain a bunch of things such as why raspberry pi doesn't allow bulk sales but would give them away with magazines
Re:Unicode character “ꙮ” (U+A66E) is being updated on Monday September 19, 2022 @06:45PM (#32905183)
why not make an additional eye a diacritic mark so you can just add an arbitrary number of eyes
Re:My First BillG Review (2006) on Thursday September 15, 2022 @01:08AM (#32847290)
Sure but the early employees whose value he disproportionately captured still mostly became very rich and aren't in much position to complain
Re:How San Francisco makes it insanely hard to build housing on Wednesday September 14, 2022 @02:59PM (#32841683)
FYI, jwz hates HN for whatever reason and redirects HN referers to shock sites
Re:How San Francisco makes it insanely hard to build housing on Wednesday September 14, 2022 @02:57PM (#32841642)
That's being unfair to him, there is tremendous local market for millionaire homeowners that still want to think of themselves as socialist revolutionaries as long as the value of their home never ever drops, and he is merely filling that demand
Re:How San Francisco makes it insanely hard to build housing on Wednesday September 14, 2022 @02:50PM (#32841551)
you obviously should have hired the services of a "permit expediter" which is totally not a legal form of bribery
the alternative is the system we're evolving to where the landless class will owe the landowning class most of their productivity, forever
I've always wanted a way to extract just the kick drums in realtime but I don't understand this field well enough to understand whether it would be remotely possible or not.

the Bay area has intense winds?

Re:Arduino raises $32M Series B round on Friday June 10, 2022 @06:22PM (#31700031)
quasi-python is a lot easier for beginners than quasi-C imo
Re:Is there a housing shortage or not? on Thursday May 12, 2022 @12:05AM (#31349163)
key word = "labor mobility"
Re:Is there a housing shortage or not? on Thursday May 12, 2022 @12:04AM (#31349158)
On the contrary, labor mobility has declined precipitously since WWII, and this is a bad thing because it means people can't move to where there is a better job for them

I have a feeling facebook's real name policy is because it's somehow better for ad profiling
Re:Twitter set to accept Musk's $43B offer – sources on Monday April 25, 2022 @12:57PM (#31157603)
only a tiny, tiny percent of users achieve "minor social media stardom". solving their problems actually doesn't strictly relate to the experience of the vast majority of users.
Re:How Putin’s Oligarchs Bought London on Friday March 18, 2022 @07:30PM (#30728985)
it's a distinct system in which they have to give a substantial share of their take to the supreme leader, and that leader sort of dictates the lines of their territory and doesn't allow them to engage in politics, and all of this exists completely outside the legal system
Re:Endurance: Shackleton's lost ship is found in Antarctic on Wednesday March 09, 2022 @03:36AM (#30612215)
And if you don't have the appetite for a whole book yet, the wikipedia article on the subject is quite well done https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imperial_Trans-Antarctic_Exped...
It's similar to the compression techniques you might use in column store
It's one of the most expensive objects period
It's actually mylar that they're made of.

Doesn't this depend on how much cross-immunity it provides?
Re:Raspberry Pi Trading plans £370m+ stock market IPO on Tuesday November 30, 2021 @01:02PM (#29395268)
I always wondered if broadcom was subsidizing RPi as a form of advertisement
Re:Apple announces Self Service Repair on Wednesday November 17, 2021 @03:31PM (#29258461)
Obviously the solution should be to use muppets instead of people. Much more fun.
The point is the amount of compensation you could give to workers from reducing CEO pay is insignificant when you divide it by the number of workers, even if you imagine an unrealistically extreme reduction in CEO pay.
If you set the CEO pay to zero and gave it to all the workers it would amount to a microscopic raise, and presumably wouldn't make the company any better run.

CEO salary / number of workers / number of working hours in a year = 14.75 million / 70k / 2080 = $0.10

Re:Fed to ban policymakers from owning individual stocks on Thursday October 21, 2021 @06:23PM (#28951545)
Would the Fed actually have the authority to even do that, regulate what securities Congress members are allowed to hold?
