You said it yourself. Assuming people are doing something without being mindful and purposefully trying to improve then 50k miles on mental autopilot it is not a surprise that someone wouldn't get better at driving. Without a desire to improve and/or being involved in a process that would give feedback then there will be no growth.

Is that a measured observation? Not trying to nitpick - genuinely curious if this is your observation from experience or there are some studies that you are referring to.

Is it me or is the top interface oriented the wrong way? You want to have the big screen pointed away from the user and all of the top controls are facing/written to the audience.
Re:Show HN: Markwhen: Markdown for Timelines on Monday December 02, 2024 @03:30PM (#42300074)
Big fan of timelines. I am going to use this for sure

Have had an idea for a timeline search/visualization. Search a thing and that pulls pages and related pages with date/times from Wikipedia. With a zoom in/out to adjust resolution like google maps - weight nodes on timeline based on page views/edits/links. Have not gotten around to try to make something like it. I bring it up here just in case something already exists and I missed it.

Re:Apple Mobile Processors Are Now Made in America. By TSMC on Wednesday September 18, 2024 @03:30PM (#41584406)
AFAIK TSMC does not manufacture the machines they use to create processors so in any case they would be moving the equipment into a facility.
Awesome to see WV at the top of yet another list of shame.

While our state representatives are issuing a tax refund because we are "running a surplus"

This state is wild. I bet it will be the first to be merged with a nearby state because of poor governance.

Re:Shouldn't FROM come before SELECT in SQL? (2011) on Thursday January 25, 2024 @09:26AM (#39129880)
Does not seem weird to me that you would start with the type of query you are writing.

Select, insert, update, delete, merge is the first word and says what you are doing.

If the keyword was in the middle of the query somewhere it would be harder to read.

There is a nice video (Practical Engineering) that covers this very well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SBvclVcesEE
Re:Clicks – Physical keyboard for iPhone on Thursday January 04, 2024 @08:36PM (#38874648)
I like the idea of a little keyboard that I can attach. But this is a replacement case so it is meant to be on all the time?

Some interesting layout choices. mostly ortholinear but not totally, double size enter key, same size backspace, tab, language globe.

Neato idea, glad to see interesting accessories coming out. This is a hard sell for me.

Re:DeskHop – Fast Desktop Switching on Wednesday December 27, 2023 @10:24AM (#38782848)
This looks great. I have a work PC and personal PC on the same desk but cannot install anything on the work PC. Would be great to declutter my desk with this.

Unrelated - surprised JLCPCB does not have a way to share a link to a PCB so folks can buy a board without needing to upload the files themselves. Maybe I am missing it?

Will be interesting to see what ends up buying up their assets.

The ones put in by the content creators themselves.

This is why I won't pay for youtube premium. It only removes part of the ads.

Can someone help me understand the line

>Due to the licensing of the underlying models like layoutlmv3 and nougat, this is only suitable for noncommercial usage.

Does this mean it isn't suitable if I wanted to use it in a product for sale or I cannot use it for tasks at my work? I would like to try to use this at work to convert vendor documentation to include in our internal wiki.

Re:23andMe scraping incident leaked data on 1.3M users on Friday October 06, 2023 @05:54PM (#37796923)
How do you hide authenticating 1.3+m unique accounts? A distributed system? A mess of VPN's? Or they don't hide it because the auth system is not checking for 1.3 million auth attemps?
Re:Ads in the OS on Wednesday September 27, 2023 @08:57AM (#37673963)
I think this says more about corporate consolidation than innovation at Microsoft.
Re:Ads in the OS on Wednesday September 27, 2023 @08:56AM (#37673941)
Would like to know what they consider to be innovations in Windows with 11. I mostly see it as a step back.
Re:Amazon Prime Video content to start including ads next year on Friday September 22, 2023 @10:08AM (#37612265)
Yeah, it is not the worst thing to deal with. I have adopted this strategy and the end result is I have to spend more money and walk around my house looking for them from time to time. Not terrible.

I'm still mad about it.

Re:Amazon Prime Video content to start including ads next year on Friday September 22, 2023 @09:32AM (#37611835)
In a decade or two when every device has the USB-C instead of 3.5, I will be pretty excited about that. Until then I have to spend my time searching out those dongles.
Re:Amazon Prime Video content to start including ads next year on Friday September 22, 2023 @09:15AM (#37611623)
Same. BT is expensive garbage.
Would really like to see a reasonable way to control an ipad or computer while in the kitchen, hands covered in flour. Let me type and use gestures on the countertop so I don't mess up my device.
Re:To Make Dishwashers Great Again? (2020) on Monday September 11, 2023 @09:54AM (#37467291)
Anyone know of a dishwasher with serviceable sprayers? The one I have now the sprayers are single piece and cleaning them out is a real task. One of them I ended up splitting open and have modified with threaded inserts to be able to reassemble it.
Re:The anesthetic effect of air at atmospheric pressure on Monday August 14, 2023 @11:00PM (#37129659)
The calming effect of being at the beach is enhanced by the elevation difference between my home and sea level?
Re:Why just blocking Meta's Threads won't be enough on Thursday July 13, 2023 @01:31PM (#36712903)
Interesting. Thank you for the link.
Re:Why just blocking Meta's Threads won't be enough on Wednesday July 12, 2023 @02:25PM (#36699413)
Can you help me understand why this is preferable to never joining in the first place? What is the goal? Controlling the entry for my email/auth of choice?
Funny how many browser extensions there are. After installing the "related" section at the bottom showed me 16 other Hacker News enhancement extensions.
Re:Imgur Updates TOS, Banning NSFW Content on Thursday April 20, 2023 @09:43AM (#35639782)
This strikes me as the obvious solution to me.
Re:Salmonella-in-Eggs Controversy on Thursday February 23, 2023 @11:07PM (#34920644)
I have chickens and as long as I keep their nesting boxes clean, the eggs will be there with no blood or shit on them. In my limited experience I have never seen blood on eggs.
Re:Linode rebranded as Akamai’s cloud computing services on Wednesday February 15, 2023 @08:42AM (#34803634)
I think these acquisitions are partly about the customer base and infrastructure but I believe a big part is getting the staff - existing functional highly skilled.
