Re:Aerodynamics of Gravel Bikes on Tuesday September 20, 2022 @07:54AM (#32910473)
These in-depth scientific studies always seem to neglect the weight and aerodynamics of the RIDER. That is surely the biggest factor when it comes to speed and efficiency.
"Dr. Mehmet Oz even touted it on his television show." Yeah, no.
Re:Perl 6 Released on Sunday December 27, 2015 @11:57AM (#10797956)
As if to confirm Perl's descent into obscurity they give the release a name that 95% of the people of the world can't read.

The cherry on top of the public relations disaster that the introduction of Perl6 has been...

Re: GitHub Desktop is now available on Wednesday August 12, 2015 @02:08PM (#10049524)
What's the difference between this and the former "Github" app?
I work for a very large company that is supposedly "leading the charge" in the IPv6 space.

Three years ago all groups were supposed to have converted completely to IPv6 by the end of the year. Never happened.

Back then the exhaustion of IPv4 addresses was "any day now". I guess someone must have found a closet with a bunch more of them somewhere.

I think for us operations types IPv6 is still too complicated. I mean when someone says "hey, what's the IP of that web server?", saying "192.168.13.129" is easy. You can even memorize an address like that. "fe80::2bdd:d4c5:f093:300a", not so much.

Besides the IPv4 address exhaustion problem I don't think anyone has made a compelling argument for IPv6 yet. At least not on the ground.

Re:10 Web design trends you can expect to see in 2015 on Tuesday January 13, 2015 @08:57AM (#8879821)
Let's hope one of them is not sites that make you click through 11 short pages of content.

So what to use instead?
Ugliest thing ever
Re:Netscape and Sun Announce JavaScript (1995) on Sunday December 08, 2013 @10:01AM (#6869841)
Interesting how they pitched it "as a complement to Java". Seems like everyone since then has been trying to emphasize how it's not.
Re:Terminology – a new terminal emulator on Tuesday March 26, 2013 @08:37AM (#5442780)
No, but you have to learn a REALLY arcane syntax!
Re:How to build a $5 Arduino clone on Wednesday March 06, 2013 @04:08PM (#5333945)
Cos the Arduino is too expensive ;-)
Fair enough. But this is still not teaching me much about actually writing an app in Meteor. It tells me to type the code in, not how it works or what it all means.

To use the calculator metaphor it would like saying: "enter 75345 + 3455 / 4, there's your taxes!"

"Type this code and run it".

Hey, I can teach you the theory of relativity in 30 seconds: type this "e=mc2".

Re:Kippt collects pretty useful links on Wednesday January 09, 2013 @05:44PM (#5034039)
Kippt promised me early on they would never go "social".

I just need a place to store my damn bookmarks. I don't need to share them with anyone, or see what anyone else has shared. There are enough sources for interesting content. And there are enough places to share things and have ego boosting "followers".

I'm just sad to see another useful service get bitten by the "social media" bug. Don't we have enough of those?

Crusty old fool here, I guess.

Re:Show HN: Coding.fm - Raining.fm for coders on Wednesday August 29, 2012 @05:53PM (#4451578)
The guy I share a cube with has the loudest keyboard in history, or at least for me. Doesn't seem to bother anyone else. But it sets my teeth on edge.

So much so that I had to dig out my old noise cancelling, over the ear things. Now I can't hear anything else, but hey! :-)

Re:Socialcam #1 on Wednesday May 02, 2012 @03:40PM (#3920756)
I consider Socialcam a virus. No wonder it's spreading. On mobile I should not be forced to install an app just to watch a Facebook video.
Re:Essential JavaScript Design Patterns For Beginners on Saturday February 18, 2012 @10:56AM (#3606812)
Wow, this will be hard for a beginner to process. Unless that beginner has a week to read it, and has a good background in programming languages and design patterns. And then he probably won't need to read this.
Re:Poll: Did you transfer your domains from GoDaddy today? on Saturday December 24, 2011 @09:57AM (#3388961)
I actually transferred away after the elephant incident: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/03/31/bob-parsons-godaddy...
