Why is it only when things go bad that people realize that human priorities are not the same as company priorities?
Do you also give all your information to a random caller that offers you a free cruise? I think you forgot that politicians are legally bribed to behave against the wishes and/or needs of the people.

You're right that moralizing is beyond useless. Instead let's define the bounds of our morality by our tax code. What can go wrong?

Reading your comment made me realize that you're right, there really isn't such a hard rule even with physical exertion. Even putting some motivating music on might make you push for an extra rep or two. If a gun was to your head maybe you'd do even more. The extreme end might be phenomena like "dead man's grip" where inhuman strength is shown while on death's door.
And yet we are bombarded with them. Thanks, market. You really gave us what we wanted. Oh wait -- that's not actually your objective!
Re:Why do you waste so much time on the internet? on Friday May 06, 2022 @05:38PM (#31289852)
It might be worth thinking about what it is that is being depleted, exactly. When I "run out of willpower" it doesn't really feel the same as when I "simply cannot do it anymore". If I lift a weight enough times, eventually I simply can't anymore, no matter how much I will it. It's not a decision, like a decision to stop working on a problem. That would be a lack of willpower to continue...?

Is there really a mental equivalent to physical exhaustion that leaves us beyond the ability to make a decision? Is that what running out of willpower would be?

If you compare the same pizzas restaurant vs. homemade then sure, but learning to do it well allows you to modify everything to suit your needs. A really nice thin crust can be made with quite a bit less dough, which may then need a lot less cheese to saturate the dish. Just like that you've knocked down two of the most calorically heavy parts of a pizza!
I don't know what rock you've been living under, but licking the boot and bring patient leads you to be stuck in the same position because "you're too valuable right where you are" for 33 years until the company gets restructured and you get laid off with nothing more than a "sorry!" before you could get your full retirement package.
Your fear is as old as time. The act of writing was considered a threat to human memory capacity and therefore wisdom too.
Did you forget what site you're on? Tech people might be good debaters but they are rarely good at relating
The whole thing about fecal transplants is that the resulting changes in your microbiome make it so your pull to sugar is weakened. Your diet changes because your cravings change. Imagine how easy it would be if you craved food that was "good for you", or that your cravings for bad food were severely weakened. That's kinda what having a healthy microbiome is like
Put yourself in the shoes of your average content moderator. Aren't they there for the paycheck like most people at their jobs? Why does everyone assume these people are first and foremost bastions of acceptable behaviour? They are instructed by executives as to how to do their jobs. Now executives are learning nuance and say "oh there's more to this than you thought, so here's the updated guidelines to follow now", to shift blame for this broken system to the moderators when all along they were following orders from above.

What is the difference, from an employee's perspective, between an abusive employer, and one that would not hesitate to steamroll them in the name of profit. Sure one is intentionally targetted and the other is collateral damage, but in the end the employee is in the same boat. All you've said so far is "..but not ALL employers!"
Re:Is my advice too mercenary? on Tuesday April 12, 2022 @07:57AM (#31001372)
You're right it's not greed itself, but the scale of its target that has grown. One person losing their job to corporate greed is a tragedy, and 10000 people losing their jobs is a statistic.
Thank you for taking the time to explain this to me.

Not true. What stops this is the creation of another service that comes in to take that space...until they go public again

OR

They remain a private business that keeps that long term aim in spite of the volatility they are bound to experience over time.

There is an understanding between shopper and shop owner about what is happening on said property. The shopper normally does not expect that the shop owner would instantly know your entire biography + family lineage just by stepping onto the property.
Re:Study conspiracy theories with compassion on Saturday April 02, 2022 @10:27AM (#30888526)
The cynicism is fueled by opinions like yours that present a false dichotomy of "western democracy (implied as the gold standard) or anything else (implied as garbage)". This is pure western exceptionalism. The only reason you think your "flawed democracy" bubble is as good as it is is due to the fact that your foreign policy espouses anything BUT democracy, and in its continual aggressions is able to sustain this garden of eden illusion on its citizens. When you see other countries' foreign policies as barbaric and backwards, you get the impression that your country is great. But you do not get to experience your own foreign policy. That is the force of propaganda at work.

Cynics perhaps understand this and think instead outside of the dichotomy. Maybe we can do much better, and the forces in the way of that are powerful --hence the cynicism.

What is the objective in saying that the USG is the shiniest turd of the bunch? What is you told you that the USG has, over the course of its relatively short history, destabilized and created power vacuums and installed puppet governments in countless countries?

There's no divisiveness to fall for. The public's loss of trust is legitimate and if anything, calling it KGB psyops propaganda is rich.. I suppose you think America doesn't engage in the exact same tactics?

You're basically saying you think depression/anxiety/ADHD are disorders but autism is "part of who you are". Is a personality change indicative of whether something is a disorder or not? Is it only when the change is perceived to negative?

Adobe and Serif won't be around forever. The list of reasons why NOT to be on Linux in some form has been, and continues to, shrink as old proprietary software gives way to the new. While it's true that industry software is often restrictive when it comes to OS requirements and Linux is often not supported, I think we are seeing more and more platform-agnostic software especially in the for of web applications.
Re:What is money, anyway? on Monday March 28, 2022 @07:53AM (#30829502)
Thank you for giving me this perspective. I think it's hard to see it this way because of the emotional load money has due to its necessity for ones survival these days.
Re:I have quit my job on Thursday March 24, 2022 @08:25AM (#30788836)
This is some fatalistic nonsense. There is a long way to go for an IT person to die of starvation. It would have to be intentional: wanting to die of starvation.
Re:I have quit my job on Thursday March 24, 2022 @08:21AM (#30788804)
It's not a conscious design effort in the sense that the blueprints were designed and implemented this way. It's more that gradually with every political decision that is based on greed, we sink deeper in a world that is defined by it.
Re:Three CISOs walk into a startup on Monday March 14, 2022 @02:07PM (#30675802)
This is the million dollar question. I think there are cases where executives take this kind of aggression like it's tough love and so they argue with the warlike technical folks but ultimately concur, like old habits dying hard
I agree with you on your description of community inceldom but I don't agree with your "fight propaganda with propaganda". If something is true, then it should be shown as such. Adults need to be able to handle the truth even if it means acknowledging the animal that we are. Then, we make a conscious choice to restrain the animal. We respect its ability to wreak havoc but understand the need to use our consviousness to make decisions that help us live in communion with our fellow humans.

If we ignore the animal and propagandise it away, we will be left wondering why certain groups behave the way they do and dehumanize them in the process. As much as it may disgust you, incels and every other group that horrifies with its ideas is still an expression of at least a fraction of our humanity.

Re:Do What the Fuck You Want to Public License on Saturday March 05, 2022 @11:38AM (#30568957)
You claim it gives legitimacy to copyright regime but then go on to show exactly how it subverts the requirements of a license to be usable (clear, unambiguous, etc). You even finish it off by saying it's not good enough.

That is exactly what DO WHAT THE FUCK YOU WANT means. Interpret however, and consequently, do whatever to it. You want to complicate it and try to nail down what things mean, that's your prerogative. It doesn't try to be a legit member of the copyright license regime.

You're missing the point. The engineers might be great but the incentives are all wrong. Engineers from those.companies aren't specialized in making software that improves peoples' lives. They are specialized in making software that makes money. These tweets call out what that end result looks like from organizational and technical perspectives. People confound money-making with good engineering. "Good" is where people disagree. The tweeter is taking good as "good" for the consumers. Orgs make "good" mean "makes more money".
Terrible food gets marketed to you all the time every day. TV, internet ads, highway billboards, subway panel ads, sides of buses, etc. Every time, you have to fight the added pressure of wanting to eat addictive crap and there's only so much strength the average person has been all the other daily pressures and concerns.

I'd bet that if all food ads were pushing leafy greens, the obesity rates would drop. It might take a generation or two.

Re:What have we got to lose? (1998) on Saturday February 12, 2022 @08:36AM (#30312698)
Interesting just means "properly aligned with incentive", which in this case is to make money
If they succeed then aren't they an acceptable fit for the role? If it devalues the role then that means the job isn't as demanding as the title makes it seem.
