Re:My MacBook Pro had over 10k USD in repairs on Friday August 27, 2021 @01:17PM (#28330458)
Interesting take at the end, I wouldn't necessarily call it a Win about AppleCare coverage, it only highlights all sorts of issues which are becoming increasingly common on Macs. Logic board and full unit replacements should not be commonplace.
Re:FBI Breaks into iPhone. We Have Some Questions on Monday March 28, 2016 @10:48PM (#11379165)
While stumbling upon different articles, I came across this video on YouTube of a guy in Shenzhen, China, that can replace the internal 16GB storage with a 128GB capacity NAND, so it's highly possible that a modified version of this is what's been done to the iPhone.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=198&v=2bGb5AOwp4...
I don't even understand why this was necessary, with both my and my husband's employer in Nevada, I am able to get a discount on the cell bill plus I get to claim my cell phone bill for taxes. To us, at least, seems fair already..
Re:Why It's Pointless To Argue About Movies on Monday June 09, 2014 @08:28PM (#7871281)
Which also begs the question – why was his posted on HN in the first place?
They're still running it.
Re:Tax the Childless on Friday April 04, 2014 @08:09PM (#7535281)
Why was this posted here? What's the relevancy?
Re:Microsoft: 0Day Exploit Targeting Word, Outlook on Monday March 24, 2014 @09:58PM (#7463266)
I stick with .pdf files

However, that might be bad practice.

Re:America Has a Black-Market Problem, Not a Drug Problem on Monday March 17, 2014 @11:38PM (#7419934)
I expect a comment like this on Reddit, not HN.
Re:America Has a Black-Market Problem, Not a Drug Problem on Monday March 17, 2014 @11:35PM (#7419921)
Ok and who will pay for that?
Yup. Retail stores and banks as well. There's plenty of large institutions that are using XP for day-to-day operations.

And people wonder how "easy" it is for those darn hackers to "steal info." It's easy to steal from a house with the door wide open.

Re:Malaysian Official Says Missing Plane Hijacked on Saturday March 15, 2014 @03:33AM (#7403952)
My husband was watching a CNN news segment about the missing plane earlier today on the TV. As I overheard the program while I was on the laptop I couldn't help but notice the absurd amount of times the news anchor kept saying "officials speculate, we believe, analysis probably indicates that...,"

There's too much focus on speculation to keep this relevant in a 24/7 news cycle.

Not Dell, but the retail store where you got it. Most (Wal-Mart, OfficeMax/Depot, Best Buy) have their "Service plans" which is pretty much paying to get rid of misc software. Retailers gotta love that extra profit while the employees get a nice SPIF.
Re:Apple releases OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 with SSL fix on Tuesday February 25, 2014 @03:46PM (#7300373)
Apple hating seems to be the new trend and I see it as the main reason for thus much attention.

That, and also for the fact that if Steve Jobs were still around, he'd be able to sweep this up or else be able to assuage the public about the 1 extra line of goto fail; I think that in the post-Jobs future, we'll see more and more "revelations" about bugs/issues within Apple/iOS/OS X with people aggressively posting as much info as possible to "stick it to Apple"

Re:How to Get a Job at Google on Saturday February 22, 2014 @06:52PM (#7284209)
I'm not, he's just an example which I thought best sums up what I am trying to describe...
Re:How to Get a Job at Google on Saturday February 22, 2014 @06:04PM (#7284053)
Easy. Think of Sheldon from Big Bang Theory. He may have a high IQ, but he lacks the ability to be able to connect different ideas and/or come up with solutions which require more than just processing mathematical computations.
Re:Ron Paul Launches Snowden Clemency Petition on Thursday February 13, 2014 @03:25PM (#7234038)
Nope. The Paul last name pretty much poisons the well.
Re:The Day the Internet Didn’t Fight Back on Wednesday February 12, 2014 @05:32AM (#7223554)
That is a really pedantic response that completely misses the point.

You can't deny that there wasn't any real, marketed involvement used by the top Internet companies to promote the cause.

Yes, the execution of this topic's awareness was very lackluster, so what exactly is your point?

Re:Today is The Day We Fight Back on Tuesday February 11, 2014 @05:35PM (#7221004)
It's as if real political change requires investment in the process throughout various means for an extended period of time, isn't it?
Re:Satya Nadella email to employees on first day as CEO on Tuesday February 04, 2014 @02:44PM (#7179811)
This is a very trivial thing to focus on in the context of Nadella's letter. What exactly is your point? It's also a poor statement to chose for psycho-analysing and judging Nadella's character.
The world needed both.
Re:A First Look at the Target Intrusion, Malware on Thursday January 16, 2014 @12:23AM (#7068218)
The POS systems that I've observed in a standard retail setting have three main components: the printer for receipts, the main terminal (POS system) in which items are scanned (which runs the Windows XP for POS), then the credit card reading machine for CC payment processing. So in this context, the POS device is the cash register.
Re:Life of solitude: A loneliness crisis is looming on Saturday November 23, 2013 @11:06PM (#6788671)
Reminds me of this video: http://youtu.be/c6Bkr_udado about loneliness (and how technology has influenced this)
I understood this point to deal with the abuse of the judicial system and the belief that law enforcement has the same powers as portrayed in TV shows like CSI, not in the fact that we have a justice system in place.
Re:Why Do Brits Accept Surveillance? on Saturday November 09, 2013 @05:36PM (#6703724)
Other ideas have the potential of going very wrong, it's in the implementation, which sounds like a challenge worth attempting to take
Re:HealthCare.gov’s head tech guy is out on Wednesday November 06, 2013 @11:44PM (#6687596)
At least the private-contractors are finally facing the consequences, in the beginning the outrage would have let you to believe that it was the President himself who was the one programming away the exchanges!
Don't forget: * Minecraft - Mushroom Biome
Re:App Review rejection 10.6 on Saturday October 26, 2013 @09:22PM (#6620330)
Besides, why bother with submitting this as an "app" considering it could just as easily be a webapp..
Re:The Jobless Rate for Poor Black Teen Dropouts is 95% on Sunday July 07, 2013 @07:59PM (#6004198)
Exactly. Shouldn't this be used as incentive for parents and families within those communities to promote school attendance and encourage academic performance?
Re:Confirmed: The NSA is Spying on Millions of Americans on Thursday June 06, 2013 @03:53AM (#5831085)
Well, if enough people say "enough is enough"... what next.

My mobile device is tied to my phone, I have some work discounts attached to my service, I have a contract (which will gain fees for early termination). These issues make it highly improbably to truly do any action (when it comes to businesses).

However, there is a way politically to actually get something done, but that requires the masses to actually organize and take action.

Re:Confirmed: The NSA is Spying on Millions of Americans on Thursday June 06, 2013 @03:52AM (#5831080)
The trouble is, that's easier said than done. However, if there were any action feasible enough to do that would make it possible to: "get into the businessman's head that the NSA is bad for business." Then that will definitely be the way to go.
