A major factor is that Venezuela's oil is mostly heavier crude, which is denser and more viscous. This makes it costlier and more difficult to extract and refine, and usually sells for a lower price than lighter crude.

There's also rampant mismanagement, poor infrastructure, and sanctions affecting the output and outcomes. See also: "resource curse"

Re:High degree of overlap between r/poor and crypto subreddits on Wednesday January 12, 2022 @07:30PM (#29915068)
Definitely an odd choice for a representative subreddit. I hadn't heard of it until I saw this HN post.

Far more interesting (if predictable) is the list overlapping subs with r/povertyfinance subscribers: https://subredditstats.com/subreddit-user-overlaps/povertyfi...

That ambiguity irked me, too. The full text[1] mentions collecting serum samples from participants "after at least 8 h of fasting," and that the study was conducted from early May to early June at Baylor in Houston, which would make for a ~14 hour fast each day.
