Re:Pidgin – A Universal Chat Client on Friday January 22, 2021 @10:59AM (#25872749)
Last commit seems to be pretty old (~5 years)

https://github.com/davidgfnet/whatsapp-purple/

This is not a question at all that this can be done or not ( There is no reason it can't all be done on-device. )

Question is will this be ethical .. I will not be comfortable using a device that logs every API an app on it is calling.

"that the phone OS could detect the usage of those APIs"

This must be handled correctly as it can this also lead to privacy violation.

Re:Show HN: GiftGenius a GPT-3 Powered Gift Recommendation Engine on Wednesday November 25, 2020 @07:36AM (#25208547)
Cool concept but I am not sure if results are apt ? For input "Old man who fought in war" and maximum creative I am getting a "blood pressure monitor". I think a "gifting" recommendation engine must understand the gift as well as person.
Re:Building Your Color Palette on Monday November 23, 2020 @01:18AM (#25184068)
All Goddesses wear red colored clothes and normally wear Red "Tilaka" ( along with yellow and white sometimes ). It does symbolize purity in a way.
Re:Full text search on 400M US court cases on Thursday November 19, 2020 @12:44PM (#25152073)
Many Zoom meetings are recurring and this might not be safe
Re:Full text search on 400M US court cases on Thursday November 19, 2020 @12:31PM (#25151907)
Results like "MEETING ID" and "PASSWORD" for zoom meetings show up way more than any other video conferencing tool for 2020 cases.
Re:SaaS Needs a Single Point of Purchase on Friday November 13, 2020 @09:54AM (#25082815)
>lot of money

I believe lot of money is a relative term.

Re:Your Computer Isn't Yours on Friday November 13, 2020 @12:48AM (#25079329)
I disagree with that, user experience in Linux is and in foreseeable future will be the most flexible of all and hence allows users to make it look exactly the way they like.

For comparison I would say Linux is like bootstrap that you can customize to make it look the way you want. iOS is like a paid theme you have bought over Themeforest with near to zero flexibility.

If you want a predefined good looking desktop, you can look at Manjaro ( that I am currently using and am pretty happy , my decent 16gb RAM with SSD system boots faster than my Macbook Pro 2019 and opens applications faster on cold boot as compared to Mac )

Re:Introducing the next generation of Mac on Wednesday November 11, 2020 @01:58AM (#25056129)
And this is not only about 2020, most likely people will use the machine till 2025. ( Also consider the fact that Apple solders the RAM to motherboard. )
People from higher caste wear a thread (goes from neck to waist , sort of like how you would wear a Quiver)
Re:YouTube-dl source code encoded in two images on Sunday October 25, 2020 @11:37AM (#24887064)
Is there a confusion in question ? GitHub is centralized, the Git protocol is decentralized. I dont fully understand your response.
Re:YouTube-dl source code encoded in two images on Saturday October 24, 2020 @11:32AM (#24879791)
Side Question : Is there a distributed alternative to github ?
Re:Video Vectorization on Monday July 20, 2020 @04:24AM (#23895836)
If I understand this correctly, will it also allow to send updates to video on the fly ? Example : Change video from X to Y time to new vectors [V1 ..] ?
Re:Wireless Is a Trap on Sunday June 21, 2020 @04:35AM (#23590707)
I completely agree with you .. The latency in wireless headphones is bad .. It is clearly noticeable in games and even in general music playing sometimes .. I cant imagine people playing serious games on mobile devices without headphone jack.
Re:Making an iPad case for blind to “See” with touch on Saturday June 20, 2020 @03:20PM (#23586254)
This is an interesting idea but from the point of view of ergonomics how much of an improvement is it from a simple stick ? I am finding it difficult to image a blind person keeping hands in folded position all thorough the day.

I think a more practical approach might be a similar setup with a mobile phone in pocket ( similar to her movie ? )

Some other countries recently took same path, relevant discussion here :

1) Singapore : https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=22702701

2) India : https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=23311298

3) Germany : https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=23376682 ( no discussion, link to repository )

4) France : https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=23321137

Great value .. But I specially see a lack of startups listed in Asian market apart from India.

Ok, found this .. I guess there is a complete map.

Re:Humans Not Invited on Tuesday May 05, 2020 @03:08PM (#23083610)
I think it is product dependent .. data-id=8 might have worked for "router" if my memory serves me right.
Re:Humans Not Invited on Tuesday May 05, 2020 @02:58PM (#23083499)
Looks like, you have to select elements with data-id="8".
Re:Kick the Shit Out of Procrastination on Monday April 20, 2020 @06:09AM (#22922572)
I have made "device of purpose" that fixes this behavior over time.

1) Laptop is for work only ( every thing else is blocked )

2) Mobile is for social media and procrastination ( I switch off internet while working. )

Re:Factor: A Practical Stack Languge on Friday January 17, 2020 @12:39AM (#22072195)
Unrelated to the main topic, but I watched this video when I was in college and it was one of the factors that inspired me to pursue programming seriously.
If a section of society "A" that is oppressed by "B" is being helped by government how is that illogical ? For some reason if that section "A" are Hindus suddenly people claim that to be anti-muslim. Hindus in neighboring counties have no place to go, government of India made that simpler for them to get citizenship because of bad behavior of prominent religions in those counties.
Re:Show HN: I'm building a robot that performs haircuts [video] on Wednesday December 18, 2019 @02:10AM (#21822585)
I stopped going to hair cutting salons and started cutting on my own to prevent the small talks.
Just playing devil`s advocate here, in the demo video :

1) Part 1 : You upload the file to the application and say we will run AI in background and a human verifies the file hence it will take time.

2) Part 2 : The code gets generated and you carry on from that point .

The problem is the time on your laptop for second part is 4:41pm and time shown on laptop for first part is 4:54 pm.

So it looks like you had the code before you uploaded the file.

I understand this might be for demo but gives wrong impression to people.

Re:MacBook Pro 16" 2019 Teardown on Tuesday November 19, 2019 @04:40AM (#21571687)
+ they will be charging absurd amount for small fixes that were possible to do on own.

example RAM is soldered to the logic board!

Re:MacBook Pro 16" 2019 Teardown on Tuesday November 19, 2019 @04:36AM (#21571676)
How long you have been using the keyboard ? Mine got screwed after couple of months of usage (I took really good care of it as I had read about the initial backlash)
Re:Coffee may have hastened the Ottoman Empire’s demise on Monday November 18, 2019 @02:34AM (#21562555)
"Coffee houses gave men somewhere to congregate other than in homes, mosques or markets, providing a place for them to socialise, exchange information, entertain – and be educated. Literate members of society read aloud the news of the day; janissaries, members of an elite cadre of Ottoman troops, planned acts of protest against the Sultan"

This feels like blaming coffee for people socializing (in todays world this would mean social networking websites, where people hang out). Its sort of saying (in hypothetical world) Twitter lead to downfall of China. Which I think is debatable.
