Re:Ask HN: What hardware are you using to run local LLMs? on Tuesday November 03, 2026 @12:11AM (#50348341)
I have an old 48 vcores xeon (5318Y) with 512GB (ddr4) of ram which I bought in 2023, it runs deepseek r4.1-flash; it's very slow; but it works and that's all I need for now.

Has already happened: Chainlink, and they're doing very well.

I think that's a really good idea! Would love to see this upstream
This will severely undermine technological innovation and the development of new technologies.

Patrick was and always will be one of the brightest stars.

Knight lore and Alien 8 were awesome, so hard though.
So basically the state of New Mexico is taking $25B from Meta's market cap, therefore whomever invested in META; and where will this money go here?

I don't deny that META did something wrong, but I don't see where taking $25B and allocating it to a state's declining economy will do anything good. Put people in jail may send a better signal, but here it feels more like a heist than a punishment; and the investors will take the hit, not the company.

Re:Akhetonics Photonic Computing: 1,000x Faster CPUs on Sunday October 11, 2026 @02:19PM (#50046141)
This has been tried by Cray like 15 years ago and the university of Colorado 11 years ago; there were also other initiatives, all failed.

I'm not excluding that now we have more budget/time/AI to make it work (if it can), I'd just say exercise caution reading this (very AI slop) article (and anything that looks too good to be true)

I wish there was some picts.
Re:California is chasing wealth that has feet on Thursday September 24, 2026 @11:53PM (#49840026)
The billionaire tax is an experiment, they did put the bar pretty high to measure how many families will relocate (that's super easy to track); once that's measured, it's easy to build a model to adjust this threshold to whatever is advantageous for the state and keep things in balance this way, where the outflow is carefully measured and weighted against the tax threshold. The "hard part" was just getting this to pass the vote; then they can adjust this threshold anytime as voters have already approved it. What isn't measured is that billionaires create jobs "around them"; and, implicitly, jobs will be created somewhere else; unfortunately this model will not measure that.
Re:OpenBSD Stories: Strange Medieval Devices on Sunday September 06, 2026 @12:17AM (#49583275)
I really like to see those old dmesgs, quite amazing work supporting this in OpenBSD (at the time)

As always with the french government: don't trust the numbers they give you.
Re:Godox Transparent Viewfinder Camera C100 on Wednesday August 05, 2026 @12:38AM (#49178618)
pretty much the worst of both worlds: a non-working viewfinder and a terrible camera.
you should never discuss your personal life at work or with your coworkers.

Re:Codeberg Bans Cryptocurrency Projects on Wednesday July 22, 2026 @11:00PM (#49016338)
This is a slippery slope, and I will stay away from Codeberg, because who knows what they'll ban next.
Re:Shinjuku Station in 3D on Monday July 20, 2026 @01:07PM (#48981614)
looks like a doom level
For sure, I'm glad we have those emulators, real hardware is hard to find or expensive or faulty. Having emulators helps a lot.
don't they still give some hobbyist licenses?
Would be amazing to implement a JIT in hercules (would make it 10x faster potentially as fast as z/PDT which implements a JIT); good timing as IBM is retiring z/PDT!
I wish this could make it to qemu's main branch; always fun to preserve new systems. I wonder if it runs openvms/ia64 too!
shocking, who could have predicted that?
Windows source has leaked (so many times) and someone ran claude code on it to find vulns, as expected; few million more patches coming; those exploits sell well $$$

Hence, there is a huge monetary incentive to leak window's source; especially if your RSUs are not really bringing money home.

I won't make the mistake to buy any other sony product.
I bought it yesterday, not too hard to get running on linux, and played for an hour, it's immense fun.
it's a bit skewed, I suspect 25% are bots and the like that don't present an identifiable user-agent. Also, a lot of bots probably identify themselves as windows to "blend-in".
fortunately I'm old, I drive a 2007 car, and won't live in this new world for much much longer!
