Granted they are a different company, but this was a huge failure for Microsoft. Different devices have different strengths and weaknesses.
Re:GitHub Alternatives on Tuesday June 05, 2018 @04:51PM (#17241924)
Microsoft has shown themselves to be very pro-open-source in the last 5+ years. Just look at things like VS Code. Microsoft is just the Nickelback of software, its cool to hate on them for no real reason (any more).
Re:Ask HN: What's the strangest place you wrote code? on Thursday May 10, 2018 @09:48AM (#17038792)
In some old security shack next to a Helipad in downtown Baghdad. Writing software to help track training of Iraqi soldiers as a contractor. Surprisingly fun work with people from all over the world.

An occasional explosion or mortar/rocket attack had us put on our armor, but overall it was pretty safe.

Without a comparison of how good the other decisions were, this means nothing :)
Re:How I Erased Facebook Comments and Likes on Tuesday March 27, 2018 @04:42PM (#16692544)
That is surely what is happening - a general (not always, I know!) rule in programming is to never delete anything, just mark it as deleted/deprecated/etc. and do not show it.

Just saw my first Rifftrax last week: Samurai Cop! I can't recommend it enough - I was crying.
I figure out so many problems while lifting weights! With the added bonus that now I can now bench, deadlift, and squat well over 300 lbs.
As a real estate investor, I lick my chops when I see news like this. But as a human being it's so terrible to see happen over and over again. Watch "The Big Short" if you haven't - everything will crash again.
Re:Alexa: Amazon's Operating System on Wednesday January 04, 2017 @01:55PM (#13321011)
I am not completely familiar with Alexa (I use Google Home) but can't you make a recipe with IFTTT to accomplish this? Though it still does not rely directly on the ALexa OS.

PlayOn is on sale for $50 right now: https://www.playon.tv/playlater

Browse/download any streaming service (that you have access to) easily - I love it.

You have 3.5-5 hours a day to work out? I want your job. Also, as a former competitive weightlifter, if you are lifting intense for 1.5-2 hours, you are doing it wrong.

Box office sales have generally increased over the past 20+ years. Possibly people in your peer group may not, but this does not seem correct. http://www.boxofficemojo.com/yearly/ http://www.the-numbers.com/market/

I agree with the first part of your statement, but I am curious how AJAX behavior was implemented without JavaScript? Are you talking about Java? CGI? I have no idea.

My University's (Minnesota) mascot is a gopher, but the physical mascot is a chipmunk/squirrel (debated) name Goldy Gopher - but it's definitely not a gopher. These rodents can be confusing!
Re:Xiaomi’s first laptop is a Macbook Air rival on Wednesday July 27, 2016 @10:54AM (#12173294)
My Razerblade can run for 6-8 hours on battery and it has dedicated graphics. When I am actually running a game, that approaches more around 1 hour.

There are a ton of these that have been out for over a decade: mailinator.com has been out since 2003 - is this any different/better?

Re:Why I fought for open source in the Air Force on Wednesday February 10, 2016 @11:02AM (#11073575)
"I was responsible for the majority of the Air Force's software programs" - as a former Computer Systems Officer in the US Air Force at a pretty high level operations center, this seems pretty hyperbolic, as no person is in this position. Maybe majority of the software for their area of work.
Re:Airline Baggage Fees Are a Good Deal for Travelers on Tuesday November 24, 2015 @04:02PM (#10623662)
Correct me if I am wrong, but when these fees showed up, my ticket price did not drop by the same amount, correct? So adding a fee, no matter how much of a "good deal" it is is still a addition to cost.
Re:Google Play Music – free, ad-supported radio on Tuesday June 23, 2015 @02:30PM (#9766663)
So your advice is to go with something that isn't out or proven in any way over a proven service because "I do not like the 'Android' app on my iPhone"?
Why is this focused at Apple and not at smartphone operating systems in general? I am not sure what integration Windows phone has, but Google Hangouts could at least go across it's messenger system and SMS - might be more widely spread.
Re:How to Be a Good Graduate Student (1994) on Wednesday December 10, 2014 @12:29PM (#8730388)
I am just about to finish my third Master's Degree, and have had 3 completely different experiences. Overall I have learned a lot, but I am just realizing how different experiences can be across the board. A paper like this is not going to be accurate much of the time.

Online MBA - simple, do the work and you get your degree, no thesis, no tests.

MS Computer Science at USF - very difficult, took me over 2 years, lots of difficult coursework, research, and a thesis defense. You could easily fail out of this program and it was incredibly stressful, but an amazing experience. My adviser was a massive help and I learned a lot (that I don't want to do research).

MS Software Engineering at U of MN (1 semester left) - Mixed, this program is very difficult and I am learning a lot. But, it is all group work (groups of 4) with occasional individual assignments and individual tests, no thesis. Though it has only happened once, I have had a completely useless, clueless group member that results in everyone else doing much more work. We complained to the professors to no avail. So I am incredibly frustrated that this person is going to get the same degree I am working my balls off for. This degree I truly think you pay your $9,500/semester and you will get a degree, I believe there is no way to fail out once you are in, this is very disheartening.

Re:iPhone 6 Screens Demystified on Thursday September 11, 2014 @12:48PM (#8303630)
Have they gotten the experience correct? Serious question, I haven't seen them.
Re:The Future of College? on Friday August 15, 2014 @01:14PM (#8183121)
Am I alone in really enjoying my college experience? I loved going to sporting events and the ivy colored buildings. Say what you want, but my Fraternity years were amazing. I would be sad if my kids were not offered this experience. This just sounds so sterile and robotic to me. Maybe not replace, but possibly to supplement for those which want the traditional option.

I have found that Dice.com is a great place to post for Technical jobs.
