Re:Governments are mishandling the affordability crisis

I borrowed the money on my flat for 1.25% fixed and I can feel the debt inflating away over the last couple of years. The Monthly payment is the same nominal amount where really nothing else still is. There are groceries twice the price of what they were 6 years ago. 6 more years like that and it will be less than paying the owners share of the building expenses.
How can you not feel that. Nobody is forcing me to take on new debt

Also seems weird to me. Claude cowork could just do my monthly tax receipt collection and compare with my account better than the bookkeeper I pay for it. That is a very cross sectional problem

In Austria it is even worse. The stamp duty is only for literally buying the house in your name. Thus all sufficiently expensive real estate is wrapped in shell companies where the transfer is untaxed.
The result - stamp duty is exclusively paid by middle class people actually buying homes, never by the rentier class. They already used the money up front to buy the votes for this law apparently

The government should need to accept its 2% in kind. I guess by the time people cannot pay these taxes any more they are much closer than 50 years to their eventual death. Thus it only reduces eventual inheritance. Problem solved

As already discussed in other places in this article Spotify chose this model and could well choose one that cannot be abused this way. Why does it need protection by the criminal justice system.

What I don’t understand. Why are the platforms not just splitting each payers monthly subscription with all the songs they have played that month. If I only play one song - it’s 12.99 for Rick Astley. Or if someone plays music 24/7 their streams are worth much less. That seems like a much fairer system that is impossible to abuse. For ad supported users you can still defraud the advertisers of course

In Vienna of all places this has become very common since we got some badly designed mailboxes. Because they don’t trust the delivery guys they don’t have a key but the flipside is that anyone with enough time can get out stuff via the top big slit. Now they also have big boxes with locks but to open them they drop you an nfc letter in your box.
So the junkies look for the bright yellow letters and open your packages. If it was clothes you will find them somewhere on the street close by

But nowadays kids are expected to check 2-4 platforms plus their notes and there is no guaranteed time when they know it will be there. It is like the worlds worst paid disfunctional work place and one of my kids schools literally uses teams for one third of their assignments. In word format so sometimes kids overwrite it.
If you don’t accept the terms your kids life is just even harder.

What he built is genuinely interesting even if it is not something I would want to give all my credentials to. Makes sense for OpenAI to hire someone who has shown he can build something a lot of people want even they don’t know how to make an even half secure app out of it.
They probably think he has the right judgement of where UX would need to move to. That is easily more valuable for them than any coding.

But are they? A Berlin startup was paying this average salary to the Indian/Pakistani devs they sponsored and fully expected to jump ship in the next 12 months. Why would they not pay 70k-75k and have your pick in the upper half of the domestic market.

It basically paints 80k/y as the top 10% of senior salary in Germany and I don’t know anyone good working for less. While I only have anecdata this seems way out of touch with what I understand companies expect to pay for their talent

In terms of NOX it can be a factor of 100. If 1% drive without cats they produce half the NOX emissions. In reality it is probably less since there are other old cars as well that have higher emissions

I literally inherited a dev once that was so bad we vastly improved velocity once he left. Every couple of months we fixed a weird bug in the code he wrote and laughed about it.
The middle manager loved him because we was very eager to work and always around

You could also give people an additional unpaid day off if they ask for it. The good thing about bereavement days is that people don’t tend to abuse the policy much given they would have to kill someone first.
Dead grannies are only allowed to make you sad for 72 hours sharp, is a bit of a harsh rule if executed without leeway

It has just become worse with my now two children growing up. My dream as an an empty nester is to emphasize the empty part.
