Re:WhatsApp Introduces Ads in Its App on Monday June 16, 2025 @05:36PM (#44293631)
Been tempting to spin up a competitor but the business/compliance side seems nightmarish whilst the actual tech aspects are trivial on modern hardware.
Re:Darklang Goes Open Source on Monday June 16, 2025 @05:26PM (#44293533)
Must be nice making SF rates out in Algeria!
What's the relationship between NGI and Nix? Vaguely remember another HNer suggested some sort of conflict of interest there re: funds.
Was anything valuable actually built? Thought those 'projects' were just subsidy...

Europe could easily have its own stack but I'm not sure taxpayer money would ever reach the right people to make it happen.

Re:Typing 118 WPM Broke My Brain in the Right Ways on Monday June 02, 2025 @05:04PM (#44163019)
WASD is my home row, still 120-140.

I lowkey judge any developer who is noticable slow at typing as I can't imagine they're using a computer effectively at such a pace given how much keyboard hitting needs to occur during regular use alone.

Not that it's a high bar but I'm surprised more companies don't test wpm when hiring over rote crap like LC.

I'm biased but my money's on the end result of AI being fewer engineers per team but also teams as a concept becoming obsolete.

Why keep legacy structures, with luxuries like POs or PMs if AI becomes powerful as you say - it'll just be 'one man startups' for better or worse.

Any empire-building VP should probably fear the wishful AI future they're praying for!

In this scenario who would be buying this product that offers 'zero economic value compared to AI because AI gets so good and so cheap'.
Re:If you are useful, it doesn't mean you are valued on Monday June 02, 2025 @10:28AM (#44159208)
My experiences track this, being lazy and clever is a cheat code in many ways.
Re:I Think It's Time to Give Nix a Chance on Monday May 26, 2025 @01:04PM (#44099286)
That's a shame, is there any funding transparency? Wasn't aware they were EU funded — thought they were independent!
No Discord, please.

Plenty of FOSS alternatives exist.

Re:Accelerating Docker Builds by Halving EC2 Boot Time on Thursday May 22, 2025 @03:59PM (#44066206)
(You wouldn't)

Patting themselves on the back for 'fixing' a self-created problem... EC2 is the wrong abstraction for this use case imo

Feature, not a bug.
No, I don't follow legacy hypervisors but fair enough perhaps my initial impression was off-base... still you can appreciate the irony of complaining about Rocket Company getting free stuff :/
We're not going to waste days chasing them when we could waste days writing a blog post to advertise our product.

Genius marketing, Rocket Company is exploiting the OSS community not the company seemingly based around reselling other people's old OSS projects?

My guess is money laundering, given that the product is pretty vapourware-y (as a game dev in a past life: Vircadia looks more like 'how a web dev thinks multiplayer games work' aka basically unusable in a serious title).
Re:The Great Displacement Is Already Well Underway on Tuesday May 13, 2025 @07:45PM (#43979131)
I've seen worse but honestly you may be overshooting: agency work, education, and seven years of 'independent consultant' reads like you just coasted after the initial few years... for 20YOE I see limited leadership or tech skills.
Re:Why are banks still getting authentication so wrong? on Tuesday May 13, 2025 @07:27PM (#43979003)
Isn't being run by a bank just a roundabout way to be run by the gov't?

Your root of trust for said bank id is gov't documents, right?

Isn't YC well positioned to disrupt Google's monopoly? They just need to pause funding AI slop and focus on quality again, even if it means doubling the standard deal to get the necessary talent interested.
Re:UK rolls out passkeys across Gov.uk services on Thursday May 08, 2025 @02:23PM (#43929503)
Ugly indeed, hopefully a successor that is actually open can emerge.
Consider that game programmers are generally more skilled than enterprise devs due to tougher domain constraints and role scarcity.
You can consistently sell trash, you just need a captured market.
Re:Find the Odd Disk on Monday April 21, 2025 @08:34AM (#43751256)
16/20 speedrun, all my mistakes were within the final 5 weirdly. Boredom?
Interesting, thanks!
Re:Linux Kernel Defence Map – Security Hardening Concepts on Wednesday April 09, 2025 @08:34AM (#43631351)
Vapourware, what they post (microkernels) is nothing new.

As far as a barrel CPUs to replace SMT... crickets

Re:Why does Britain feel so poor? on Friday April 04, 2025 @11:15AM (#43583632)
Don't most countries have similar policies to IR35?

Devil's advocate as I, too, dislike how it was basically lobbied by big corps but really it seems unsustainable for high tax Euro countries to allow their people too much working freedoms?

Re:Why does Britain feel so poor? on Friday April 04, 2025 @11:10AM (#43583564)
Unlike the US, UK is closer to EU in that IT contractors, engineers, tech work is paid and perceived closer to skilled labour than professional-managerial class.

Upper-middle class is mostly bankers, barristers, surgeons, some politicans and so forth.

Re:Why does Britain feel so poor? on Friday April 04, 2025 @11:00AM (#43583433)
Modern Britain is just a rentier economy.

Huge income taxes on low wages and limited wealth tax is not exactly enticing compared to welfare or moving overseas.

Re:ASML's boss has a warning for Europe on Saturday March 29, 2025 @01:32PM (#43517107)
Would actually help most places than hinder, I think.
Re:The Pain That Is GitHub Actions on Wednesday March 26, 2025 @09:44PM (#43489595)
Not a hater - nobody will contest that Docker was a huge success, congrats... I just don't think Dagger has legs tbh.

It's doa, Sol.
