Yes, a big disappointment.

I wish the press would do the responsible thing and use the proper words for those things: "corporate raiders".

Giving into establishment's newspeak is not doing anyone a favor. And let questionable people do the toxic thing they do (destroying companies for his own interest) while feeling good about themselves.

For now, I chose to keep away from any media that uses those lying words (such the ones one would use to cover up for torture, bombings, etc).

Noted: Fortune is in the no read list.

Thanks for your feedback. This is very interesting.

> Your two big competitors are Facebook (free for posting events)

Facebook is not exactly a competitor because it's a walled garden. So you have to be part of the right groups or be suscribed to official pages to get events.

It don't know about you, but all this facebook overhead is starting to bore me. I love salsa, hip places and fancy. I want the best events for me NOW. I love dive bars, cheap beer and sweaty rock. I want the best events NOW.

> - Chicken & egg: If you can't populate your event base with pre existing data, you may have a chicken/egg problem.

Unless you have some magic crawler technology...

I'd love to have a access to a event central database that curates events for me matching my taste and previous choices.

I could pay a flat fee for a mobile app that could do that. And I wouldn't mind it having ads for other places/events that could suit my taste.

I have a hard time imagining that events curating is not a real problem. Finding new places and fun events to go to is actually a pain.

Is it a monetizable pain ?

The linked article implies that Paul Graham thinks that this is not worthy of a shot (or a second shot). Is it not monetizable enough ? Is it a nut too tough to crack ?

I wonder what the reasons are (I wish I have more research on the subject).

Well, this problem got me thinking.

If you want to keep talking about it, here's my email name.is.carl (@) gmail (you know what)

Brandond, would you care to give insight why the local event idea is bad ?
I'm interested in that, too.

I go out a lot (in my home town, and even more so in holidays), and I'd love to have an app to give me suggestions of events (special nights, museums, openings, and such).

Why was it a bad idea ? Have brandond and al. research the market ?

> traveling to Austin during SXSW can be a big productivity and morale boost.

I like that you are including morale. I'm fed up with productivity gurus, GTD peddlers and existence hackers.

Being transformed into a list crossing drone is not my shtick.

Being a clone of Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Larry Ellison, Jack Welch (<insert your favorite prick>) is not what gets me out of bed in the morning.

Remember folks, you can end up dead well before your 100 millions yacht is finished. That has been seen before.

Thanks for your tips anemtiz !

Re:“Did we just rip off Marco Arment and The Magazine?” on Saturday March 02, 2013 @04:32AM (#5309052)
So TypeEngine (a company I didn't know existed) got free publicity from Arment himself ?

Pretty clever...

And yet 007 is not the same as 7.

Go figure.

Re:Sorry, Geeks, Microsoft Excel is Everywhere on Thursday February 14, 2013 @09:26PM (#5224060)
TLDR.

Excel is a tool. The major problem is the dimwits (mainly in suits) that use Excel instead of thinking. Anyone can make a decision if $A$1 > $B$1 + $C$1.

When an Excel formula is doing the thinking for you, this is a bad sign. For you as a person. And for your job that will be shipped some day. To India (no offense to the nice chaps over there). Or to some ERP module (no offense to SAP).

Please be a nice human being : be smart.

Re:Introducing a new Java framework for web development: Micro on Sunday February 10, 2013 @01:26PM (#5197254)
I second that. As javaists are concerned, Play 2.x is not a good thing : bigger, slower, more rigid and with a lot scala dependencies/idioms you don't care about.

Forking Play 1.2.x could be a solution (and maybe remove the python console. After all that's a java framework)

Or.

Or one may use the extensibility of Play 2.x to remove the scala parts javaists don't want. It shouldn't too hard.

Here's a thread on the official forum about it : https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups=#!topic/play-fra...

Machine are awesome at life advice.

Since I take their input, my life is bliss :

* wall-e on romance : now I date an ipod

* robocop on hairstyle : I had to stop as it screwed majorly my head

* HAL-9000 on gaming : I don't let nobody beat me at "jeopardy: the mission"

* MCP on people : I chmod 700 every aspect of my life

* Terminator on ending relationships : going down in a melting vat is the way to end things the cool way.

* D.A.R.Y.L on procreation : kids are only cool if they are robots.

Also, it may a good idea to keep an eye open on elementary/luna : a linux distribution that has UI designers (that owns Apple devices, obviously).

That distro (currently in beta) comes with its own eye pleasing apps.

More info here : http://elementaryos.org/

Here a fancy ad : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LjCN_sbc1t4

PS : for those who were disappointed by elementary/jupiter, keep an open mind. This is something very different. The distribution is actually

From what I understand, it may be tough to open up to your teammates when you feel down.

After all, in the workplace, you are expected to show leadership, strong will and the power to go through anything. Especially in the ultra competitive world of startups.

So I can understand the OP MO here.

PS : OPMO is a funny word.

PS : and for different reasons, family is sometimes a big no no as well.

Fixing your moods by replacing them with something else is pretty smart.

And if you manage to have a somewhat healthy something else, you're relatively lucky :)

Please, macosx releases have an history of being bug ridden. So much that one upgrade was free (the first one, if I recall correctly).

The man built his own legend by rewriting history and bullying press. And selling computers, phones and walkmans, too.

Re:Twitter is the Benjamin Button of startups. on Friday September 07, 2012 @03:53PM (#4490868)
Twitter is the batman trilogy of startups.

It took an old idea and make it new and relevant again.

In the second movement, it went huge and was the new sensation.

The conclusion of the story will be bland and all over the place. With pundits failing to see that the emperor has no clothes.

Re:Twitter is the Benjamin Button of startups. on Friday September 07, 2012 @03:48PM (#4490842)
And as for Microsoft, it would have been more interesting than buying a client side software (Skype).

Bloated application : itunes. Clunky user experience : finder. Bug ridden OS updates : you know the ones. And best of all, offering two ways to run Windows on your Apple branded hardware : bootcamp and parallels :p

Fortunately, there are also upsides. The ios app store (even if all the major mobile app stores launched in 2008) was a godsend and lifted from linux package managers. At least, that's how I see it.

Black and white is boring. Shades of grey are more interesting. Unless there are 50 of them.
