There is a philosophical problem hidden in the core of interpretability: Can a mind understand a mind much greater than itself?
Re:Marx, Keynes, and A.I on Monday August 31, 2026 @06:35PM (#49515688)
Marx foresaw and correctly predicted the rise of what he calls "organic composition of capital" (simplifying, machines and automated production) and the diminishing of human labour.. which can also be seen as accumulated past (dead) labour over living labour.

There is a famous fragment about how this, taken to the extreme, results in a contradiction that breaks the law of value, and it makes no more sense to use labour time as exchange value: https://www.marxists.org/archive/marx/works/1857/grundrisse/...

We are now seeing an almost literal realization of this passage:

The accumulation of knowledge and of skill, of the general productive forces of the social brain, is thus absorbed into capital, as opposed to labour, and hence appears as an attribute of capital, and more specifically of fixed capital, in so far as it enters into the production process as a means of production proper
What Marx didn't imagine AFAIK, was fully autonomous machines that not only can reproduce themselves but that they can also use guns (and surveillance, prediction, germs, etc) against all humanity, transcending capitalist relationships and potentially controlled by a single master (hi Elon) or none (Skynet), without workers involvement. That kind of machine is outside Marx analysis but doesn't contradict it. We are seeing the first glimpses of it in the AI systems used to execute the Gaza genocide. In such scenario who controls the ASI controls the world, more like Hitler with an Aladdin's lamp than the metabolism and historical evolution described in Das Kapital we saw until now.

Because Stapledon influenced Foundation directly, acknowledged by Asimov in his own autobiography.
I care and I'm part of Nature.
As far as we know life is only present on Earth, we presuppose that in the vastness of Cosmos there are other instances of it or that it can re-emerge from almost zero, but the reality is that we simply don't know. So maybe there is a possibility that wiping out all the life on Earth also wipes it from the entire Cosmos, forever.

So he is against China for its hypothetical usage of AI against civilians but is not against US and Israel that already use AI provided by him to operate a real genocide that kills thousands and thousands of Gaza children in the most horrible ways? Very ethical.

Re:ECC and DDR5 on Monday July 20, 2026 @09:56AM (#48978944)
Something important not discussed here is that you need not only error correction (when possible) but also error reporting, so you can know you RAM is failing. Sadly, is not possible to get DDR5 on-die ECC error counts reported to the OS. Alternative solution, use IBECC with DDR5, where the CPU reserves a portion of the RAM for parity bits and does the check / reporting.

Piketty is not a marxist, he even declared he never read Das Capital.
Re:Isaac Asimov: The Last Question on Friday April 17, 2026 @12:11PM (#47807483)
Seconded, but note some paths were taken (at least partially), as in some way is a meta-book were each paragraph comprises an idea that deserves a full book on its own. Some Stapledon readers were clearly inspired by it, e.g. Dyson spheres were first postulated there, and Borges got the "The Garden of Forking Paths" idea also from it.. and also Virtual Reality (not bad for 1937!) . Asimov was also an Stapledon admirer and he said that Stapledon expanded s.f. to a cosmic scale, so I think that Stapledon influence is also very present in The Last Question.

I remembered this short story when recently reading Ilyenkov "Cosmology of the Spirit", also from 1950s but only published in 1980s ( https://static1.squarespace.com/static/588bcd399f74561e5f64a... )
I think nobody with a couple of neurons still buys the "every school and hospital in Gaza were Hamas, so we bombed them" nazi-zionist rhetoric.
Israel and the US are bombing lots of schools and hospitals and civilian infrastructure, this is not the only case. This is intentional genocide, not a software/organizational/human error.
Re:Living Human Brain Cells Play Doom on a CL1 on Monday March 09, 2026 @10:21AM (#47309474)
You are confusing intelligence with consciousness (qualia). We simply don't know how qualia develops or how to measure it. We cannot discard, for example, than an ant has a greater qualia level than us. There are theories about qualia being connected to microtubules on neurons and quantum effects... the DOOM-playing neurons also have those microtubules. So you cannot say "definitely not".

Remember that the US administration is supporting Israel on the ethnic-cleansing and genocide of Gaza, using Palantir technology and AI systems that generate kill lists. It's "IBM and the Holocaust" all over again.

Re:Technocracy 2.0 on Wednesday February 04, 2026 @04:27PM (#46892052)
Technocracy had both socialist proponents like Charles Steinmetz and also anti-communists racists/fascists like Joshua Haldeman (Elon Musk grandfather). In some ways technocracy is the acknowledging of the necessity of economy planning to transcend capitalism but without taking into account class struggle. That way, it can be seen like a good-willed engineer dream that doesn't wants to face social reality or thinks socialist like planning can be implemented just by convincing capitalists it's advantages for the entire society (somewhat like the old utopian socialism / fabianism)... or, it can be used as an ideological cover-up to sell the dream of a brighter future but without questioning the billonarie class, the concentration of capital or the property of the means of production, while avoiding taking explicit positions in every class struggle instance.

I think this new version is the latter case, a bad rehearsal used as a veil of the ascent of fascism in the States.

Re:Perl's decline was cultural on Sunday December 07, 2025 @02:04PM (#46184139)
Perl was a bad language, line noise. It was better than using bash and awk for complex scripting, and better than using C for CGI pages. But Python and PHP were better and more readable for those use cases, and killed Perl.
There’s something profound behind that funny observation. God is a creation of the human mind, yet humanity forgets that it created God. The idea then appears as something external, becoming an independent power that shapes and controls human consciousness. Humans become alienated from what they themselves produced.

This was Feuerbach’s insight, and Marx extended it: just as humanity creates God and then treats him as an autonomous force, it also creates Capital. But Capital comes to operate as if it were an external, self-moving—almost “demonic”—power. People end up acting not according to human needs, but according to the logic of Capital itself.

From this perspective, the Marxist project is not merely a struggle against the bourgeoisie; it is an effort to overcome humanity’s alienation from its own creations—to reclaim power from the human-made “demon” that has come to dominate social life.

Re:What Comes After Science? on Friday November 14, 2025 @01:39PM (#45930226)
Deterministic doesn't necessarily mean that can be understood by an human mind. You can think about a process entirely deterministic but so complex and with so many moving parts (and probably chaotic) that a humble human cannot comprehend.

Re:AI Is Making Us Work More on Tuesday October 21, 2025 @12:52PM (#45658092)
The problem is capitalism, not automation.
Because containers were lighter than VM's, made reproducible and modularizable how to build the VM contents, and "solved" Unix/POSIX process isolation / library management design flaws.
