So what happened? Why aren't we in a world of abundant energy?

Are they? I was under the impression they required some sort of subsidy and/or restrictions on natural gas production to be competitive.

And then where do they come from? Ivy league MBAs or IB?

No shade at those guys, just curious. I'm early-career and I've got interests in finance and programming. It seems like I see fewer engineers running the show, as if committing to programming as a career tops-out at a certain point because you're missing certain experience. Though, I don't know enough to know what that special sauce is.

Re:Career progression of FAANG engineer vs. crypto engineer on Monday October 18, 2021 @04:25PM (#28911206)
Someone in the thread said "it's the same in finance vs crypto now".

I wonder how tapering and rate hikes will affect this relationship. I have dabbled in weird edge-case-crypto territory, and even with all the scams, there's so much cool stuff and promise. But I don't know if it's sustainable given the overall economic context we're heading into.

Would you do a guy a favor and lay some links or at least breadcrumbs such that I might start learning my history? I'm picking up programming at a relatively advanced age (31) and don't have the time to do deep hunts for stuff like I did when I was in my 20s BUT I want to keep security right in mind as I write everything I make.

Were the records of payment a method to keep track of who might be using it?
Re:L0phtCrack Is Now Open Source on Sunday October 17, 2021 @10:34PM (#28901724)
you're doing something neat with your Us but I, unfortunately, came of age after lots of the cool times were over. All the hackers got jobs in industry and it feels like if I poke anything that isn't hackthebox I'll either A. have the FBI up my ass immediately or worse, B. have created a record somewhere of having committed one felony or another that will appear at an appropriate time for someone else and inappropriate time for me.
Re:L0phtCrack Is Now Open Source on Sunday October 17, 2021 @10:31PM (#28901702)
Can you suggest some news sources?
Re:Why Mathematics is Boring (2007) [pdf] on Sunday October 17, 2021 @08:10PM (#28900883)
You can't post something like this and not post the video.
Waterwheel, then, no?
Re:L0phtCrack Is Now Open Source on Sunday October 17, 2021 @08:04PM (#28900851)
Is it even really relevant anymore?
depends. It could ripple into the legacy financial system. If that happens, we could see some really onerous regulations that prevent innovation.
Can you direct me somewhere to learn more about Gatling's ethos?
Re:Picking the Right Investors on Saturday September 18, 2021 @06:18PM (#28579861)
How does one go about finding investors in the first place? A couple buddies who weren't into tech are putting together a product and haven't even considered outside funding because everything seems so opaque to them. The whole plan is to try and incrementally make enough money from early sales while working out of a garage to scale up. They're a couple of midwesterners who have never had any connection to the tech or finance industries.

why? I'm newish to programming so this is over my head.

Has it been proven? I'm not a malthusian at all and that argument drives me up the wall. However the best answer I can come up with is "capitalism is a brass-balled bet that we'll figure our problems out, and so far we have."

Re:Ask HN: What is your strongest contrarian opinion? on Saturday September 18, 2021 @05:37PM (#28579559)
I kind of agree with this, but I've thought about it and it typically leads to an ugly sort of huxleyan society where most people wind up on drugs that are being provided by the government
Re:Ask HN: What is your strongest contrarian opinion? on Friday September 17, 2021 @07:30PM (#28572045)
I was speaking with a close friend about how Kyle's mom drove him HOURS with a WEAPON OF WAR across STATE LINES to go HUNTING for protestors. It was made clear that there was no room to disagree.

From watching all the video closely, and checking google maps drive time (about 35 minutes) it looks more like a kid who has firearm training and went to the community he works in to help clean up graffiti, etc. after a riot. Once there, someone armed him. In the first video he's being pursued and someone throws something at him and he fires when cornered. He called the police to report himself. Then the crowd pursued him and two people who attempted to attack him with deadly weapons (skateboard, pistol) wound up getting shot, surprise. He heads to the police to turn himself in.

>wish to talk more

Always, but alas, I'm already behind on keeping up with people I know irl. I do have some debate left in me on those points* but you can probably imagine it, you seem like a good chum. Maybe pay close attention to the defendant's case as it develops. Anyway, good luck in your endeavors!

*except where you said I mixed up contrarian and controversial. That's an accurate call-out.

EDIT: I had to wait two hours to post this because apparently I was posting too much. What's the rate limit on HN? I've only got 5 posts on my account prior to this one.

Lol, you've got me dead to rights. That's exactly what I was going to do. I'm glad you made this call because my toxicity extends to myself. I'm procrastinating on some work I told myself I'd finish hours ago.

Anyway, I live in a northeastern liberal city, and I grew up in one too. I'm aware that my opinions are popular in some cohorts, but my experience day-to-day and of the internet, all my life, has been such that I've never really thought of that cohort as being in the mainstream; more like 'those crazy idiots who believe the things they see on fox news'.

Isn't there some chance someone will manufacture laptops that people can have 100% confidence don't contain hardware-level backdoors?
Re:Ask HN: What is your strongest contrarian opinion? on Friday September 17, 2021 @04:31PM (#28570560)
>because the silent majority are cowards

I think part of it is because the language that those ideas are built on is intentionally very slippery. If you aren't extremely careful with how you word things, you wind up sounding like you're denying factual historical events.

John McWhorter is the only voice I've heard so far who can reveal the swiss-cheese nature of the set of beliefs contained by the term 'CRT', and do so in the very language of the educated class that espouses CRT.

Re:Ask HN: What is your strongest contrarian opinion? on Friday September 17, 2021 @04:00PM (#28570262)
I'm extremely confident I would lose my job if I expressed any of these out loud or on a social account connected with my name. I think that speaks to some level of contrarianism. You've said yourself that they're bad. You've also claimed they're mainstream, so unless you're being redundant you meant that they were 'bad' in the sense of 'bad ideas' not 'bad examples of contrarian ideas'.

- Contemporary feminism hurts most women and encourages relationship-sabotaging behavior.

- The narrative that the US and other Western nations' participation in white supremacy and slavery/colonialism is the main societal influence today is overblown and is likely leading to unnecessary political violence and turmoil.

- I don't think abortions should be banned, but generally speaking, it is incredibly easy to not get pregnant. Don't have sex. Unless you were raped, no one is 'forcing' anything on you, those were your decisions. It is baffling to me that no one says this out loud.

- There are only two genders.

- Kyle Rittenhouse acted in legitimate self-defense. The popular understanding of the case is beset with misinformation about what happened.
