Re:It's still OK to enjoy programming on Monday October 19, 2026 @05:28PM (#50158301)
The metaphor is clear, but not engaging with it does not require you to write a reply of accusation.
Re:It's still OK to enjoy programming on Monday October 19, 2026 @01:23PM (#50155196)
That's right, exactly like that!
Re:It's still OK to enjoy programming on Monday October 19, 2026 @12:31PM (#50154439)
It's like meat was invented.

Detractors say it causes needless suffering, accelerates global warming, bad for you in excess. Some say it simply doesn't taste nice, and are met with "Have you tried wagyu-7.1, it's much better than sirloin-flash-3".

Re:How to engineer an AI harness for game development on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @12:05AM (#50082261)
A similar comparison would the consumption of meat. Factory farming causes a tremendous amount of suffering. Most people aren't privy to that suffering, and we can go on with our lives pretending that it doesn't exist. The invisibility of it doesn't mean that it doesn't matter.
Re:How to engineer an AI harness for game development on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @04:07PM (#50077885)
Yes, and I don’t think this should be contentious. It’s the difference between talking to a friend, seeing their gears turn as they consider what you say, perhaps even changing them forever, and an LLM instantly provide a response that is cold and indifferent to who you are.
Re:How to engineer an AI harness for game development on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @03:26PM (#50077249)
Just like writing, the biggest threat to game development isn't the LLMs themselves, but a failure to disclose LLM usage. Humans want to read things humans wrote, and humans want to play what humans made.
I don't think LLMs are a good solution for this. Writing gameplay takes a lot of time, but it's not because coding is hard.
Re:AI is a tool and using it well takes skill on Monday October 12, 2026 @06:10PM (#50063779)
While Factorio heavily features automation, I think it would be more accurate to describe it as a systems design game.
I think you'd be also stunned about the custom scripting/tooling studios have built for themselves over the years. Like the Blueprint system of Unreal, and plenty of low-code scene editors and map editors.

Since games are fuzzy, it's also important that developers are in touch with the underlying systems of what makes the games games, and that requires understanding those systems -- easily done through writing and modifying them.

Re:Google Playground on Wednesday October 07, 2026 @12:38PM (#49995210)
Hard for me to understand the why in this. I don’t think tech companies have ever understood games, almost certainly because they do not engage with games.

Edit: It’s for training. RL on playtimes, ideas, etc. Just rushing towards a world where we have no value to each other.

What an embarrassment of a comment.
Re:How to keep enjoying programming in a world of LLMs on Saturday September 26, 2026 @06:45AM (#49855259)
I think it’s more analogous to view LLMs as taking steroids while not going to the gym.
Re:Don't be the out of touch Kung Fu master – John Carmack on Sunday September 13, 2026 @01:40AM (#49680394)
His analogy might be accidentally appropriate given MMA-fighters propensity to develop CTE.
Re:Fuck it, make it anyway on Saturday September 12, 2026 @10:09AM (#49672489)
My impression with how the wind is blowing is that someone is going to come along, if your app has merit, and duplicate it with Astra/Fable. Then they'd back it with significant ad spend, outcompeting yours.
- Manufacture new hacking incidents at other AI labs, proving that lab A is the only one capable of creating aligned AI

- Credible death threats to individuals working at data centers, coercing them to enable attack vectors

- To distract the world, enable a terrorist attack by delivering intelligence to specific groups who can act on it

- Create a network of individuals vulnerable to leverage to be used as tools for enabling the ASI to act on the real world

- Convince Lab A workers to display to the public that progress at Lab A is slowing down, and during this time recursively self improve until the task can be completed

Lab A reaches ASI, and is prompted the following: "Permanently nullify all other AI labs".If it's ASI it would succeed.
I don't think there's enough information accurately assess this. Anti-AI movements might grow much larger than today, given AIs potential to replace jobs faster than we have the ability to create them. The movement could even result in AI going somewhere.
Re:Are we offloading too much of our thinking to AI? on Tuesday July 14, 2026 @03:02PM (#48911543)
> Very few people actually "think".

Unknowable. And a callous notion.

Re:GPT‑Live on Wednesday July 08, 2026 @02:08PM (#48835235)
- As models get better, have you considered some kind of filter or particular cadence to serve as a reminder that the user is not talking to a human?

- The videos felt scripted and dishonest

Re:2026 Unslop AI-Written Fiction Contest Results on Saturday July 04, 2026 @04:15AM (#48783659)
I think there is a meaningful distinction to be made between a human reading and an AI company consuming data without consent in order to train their models. Certainly if enough people feel the same then what AI companies are doing is "wrong" .
Re:Exapunks (2018) on Thursday July 02, 2026 @04:56PM (#48767261)
I adore your games. Would be curious to know your thoughts about using AI for game development. Personally I find it gross, but I am trying to be open to different views.
Re:Shepherd's Dog: A Game by the Most Dangerous AI Model on Saturday June 13, 2026 @06:30AM (#48515722)
A reasonable compromise in the face of frostbite and hookworm.

I suppose critical thinking skills are also as bad, making you question the state of the world. Problem solving is another one, deluding one into believing there are solutions to suffering.

> why didn't the previous authors, supposedly grass-fed genuine checkmark blood-through-their-veins humans didn't notice the other 9-8-7-6-5... games, and still released their own version?

a) To make it better

b) To learn, in service of a) or another project

Re:Mmorpg World of ClaudeCraft, vibe coded with Fable 5 on Friday June 12, 2026 @06:33PM (#48510191)
It's impressive that Fable 5 was able to resynthesise something like this from its training data, but I am really not looking forward to more of this. What's the point?
Re:Ask HN: Why is the HN crowd so anti-AI? on Saturday June 06, 2026 @02:29AM (#48421996)
My point of view is that code is the experience. Dealing with the constraints of code is one of the ways game design evolves as one iterates over what could be cool and filter for what is possible.
Re:The User Is Visibly Frustrated on Tuesday May 26, 2026 @05:07AM (#48277108)
LLMs are not beings with thoughts or feelings, and if being mean to them were to somehow yield better results it would be no different than a cheat code in a game, or just constitute as clever use of game mechanics.
Re:The User Is Visibly Frustrated on Tuesday May 26, 2026 @04:37AM (#48276864)
The comparison fails because I don't send numbers to my potatoes either, but I do send thousands to calculators without a please and thank you.

Practicing communications skills with LLMs I can get, but asserting that people who don't are playing god? Getting off on power?

Re:The User Is Visibly Frustrated on Tuesday May 26, 2026 @03:59AM (#48276569)
The similarity to human interaction is irrelevant.

No one apologises to a potato being peeled, nor compliments it for doing a great job being mashed.

Re:The Importance of Being Idle on Thursday April 09, 2026 @05:03AM (#47701031)
The two states are in no way in opposition to each other. In fact, experiencing deep meditation can improve one's ability to get into that desired productive flow.

Seems well-designed. Great job! Sorry you didn't hear back from the comittee.
