When will people realize that slapping yet another startup's tech stack onto yours isn't going to magically fix anything and in fact just adds complexity and points of failure.

I've always done my best to err on the side of "let's try not to add yet another level of complexity" and this strategy has yet to fail me.

Re:Hyundai to acquire Boston Dynamics on Thursday December 10, 2020 @10:00AM (#25374328)
So the more empty promises a CEO makes, the more valuable a company?

And they say capitalism isn't broken.

Have fun holding those bags I guess.

I swear this is the logic of a small child. Dangle some candy in front of them and they'll follow you anywhere.

Re:Hyundai to acquire Boston Dynamics on Thursday December 10, 2020 @10:00AM (#25374322)
I frankly can't see how this is inciting a flamewar. Tesla has a pretty good record of being terrible at manufacturing. I've seen innumerable comments on this site where people make similar "what makes you think that..." comments that are inciting argument. I don't see why mine is special.

Furthermore, in the linked comment, the person I was replying to did, in fact, completely miss the point of my comment and make an entirely non sequitur resposne. Will they be getting warned too?

Re:Hyundai to acquire Boston Dynamics on Wednesday December 09, 2020 @04:08PM (#25365008)
What makes you think that Tesla would be able to do that, given their reputation of not being able to manufacture cars that don't fall apart immediately upon rolling off the factory line? They kinda have to be able to build cars in the first place in order to build them faster with more robots.
So you still think it's a good thing that a private company should be handling important infrastructure and be able to say, on a whim, "Nop, we're not going to handle this because reasons. Sorry not sorry."

How can you say for certainty that they won't do it again? Are you in a leadership position at UPS where you're able to make that assertion?

They're not literally saying to people, with no notice, that "no, we won't accept this mailpiece" so yes, I think they're doing better.

Privatizing the mail doesn't magically prevent delivery mistakes from happening, despite what you appear to be suggesting.

So, anyone here still think it's a good idea to privatize postal delivery?
Damn, my point went impressively far over your head huh.
Re:Japan and South Korea see surge of suicides among young women on Wednesday December 02, 2020 @11:44AM (#25278181)
Ah right, because using other tried and tested methods like providing everyone better mental healthcare options are boring. Just make an app! Apps solve everything! Apps! Apps! Apps!

Oh right but providing better mental healthcare doesn't allow for people to receive bogus investements for their overhyped app and make millions.

That's why it's not an option.

Re:Japan and South Korea see surge of suicides among young women on Wednesday December 02, 2020 @11:41AM (#25278156)
Yeah just keep throwing apps at every problem, that'll fix things eventually.

lmao

Re:Venture Capitalists Are Deforming Capitalism on Tuesday November 24, 2020 @09:37AM (#25198762)
You make it sound like the companies who run this shit are penniless, they're not, they're making millions of dollars of actual cash. There's no charity going on here.
Re:Venture Capitalists Are Deforming Capitalism on Monday November 23, 2020 @02:43PM (#25190809)
Yes, actually.
Re:Venture Capitalists Are Deforming Capitalism on Monday November 23, 2020 @12:59PM (#25189551)
> I feel like either I have gone crazy, or the world has.

Occam's Razor time: capitalism doesn't work!

Re:Venture Capitalists Are Deforming Capitalism on Monday November 23, 2020 @12:56PM (#25189508)
Who cares. That's where capitalism is now because letting it run rampant created and caused this.

The bed was made, and now we all get to sleep in it.

Re:Venture Capitalists Are Deforming Capitalism on Monday November 23, 2020 @12:47PM (#25189404)
So it's not real capitalism even though this industry is, quite literally, called "Venture Capitalism"

okay.

Re:Venture Capitalists Are Deforming Capitalism on Monday November 23, 2020 @12:45PM (#25189383)
Exactly this.

You can't take "well this is happening but it's not real capitalism" even though everyone's calling it capitalism. It's capitalism. Capitalism is busted and rewards greed and concentration of wealth.

It doesn't take a galaxy brain super genius to figure out that an economic system that relies on infinite growth doesn't exactly pan out in the long run, and what we're seeing in America today is just the late effects of the capitalist system that we allowed to run rampant because apparently any amount of socialism is communism and scary because reasons I guess.

Re:Venture Capitalists Are Deforming Capitalism on Monday November 23, 2020 @11:37AM (#25188531)
This is just capitalism working as expected and - wow news flash - it is a broken system.
Re:Openstreetmap is having a moment on Wednesday November 18, 2020 @02:07PM (#25140970)
"If you’ve ever ... peaked at the dash of your obnoxious neighbor’s new Tesla…you’ve used OSM."

1. peeked, not peaked

2. Teslas do not use OSM for the on-screen maps. They use Google maps. Tesla only uses OSM for the data regarding parking lot layouts for the automatic parking features, nothing else.

Re:Watch live: Zuckerberg, Dorsey testify before Senate [video] on Tuesday November 17, 2020 @11:43AM (#25125840)
Sorry but "rich people are miserable because they have too much money" is not a real problem and I feel exactly zero sympathy for anyone in that position.
Re:YouTube-dl's repository has been restored on Monday November 16, 2020 @12:12PM (#25114160)
The fact that it comes down to "the RIAA continues to have power" versus "we have to trust some billionaire to stop this" is disgusting, imo.
Re:HP Instant Ink is “ink as a service” on Friday November 06, 2020 @02:33PM (#25010400)
The only reason you'd think that's what communism is is if all your ideas about what "communism" is come from capitalist propaganda.

That's a fair point yeah.

Re:Disclosure: Unlimited Chase Ultimate Rewards Points on Wednesday November 04, 2020 @09:02AM (#24989098)
Don't talk to the cops about anything, ever. Especially not this.

Lawyers are paid to keep your best interests in mind.

Cops will investigate the shit out of you and will do nothing to help, at all.

Re:No More Google on Monday November 02, 2020 @04:26PM (#24973601)
Some weird ones I'm seeing:

Airtable doesn't seem to be an alternative to Google Sheets, it seems like a much different application than a generalized spreadsheet that can do math operations.

Vimeo isn't really a replacement for YouTube, it's fundamentally different in the types of content it markets itself as being for.

The Google Docs alternatives all seem to be note taking applications (except for Zoho), not document editing software.

Dark Sky no longer offers an Android app, not really a good replacement for Google Weather.

Re:The self-driving car is a red herring on Wednesday October 28, 2020 @11:25AM (#24919829)
I'd love to know how you expect a computer to navigate a blizzard on an unpainted country road when even adaptive cruise control systems can't handle a bit of snow on the sensors.

Sure this stuff works fine in Arizona where there is no inclement weather most of the time, and the roads are in perfect condition because freeze/thaw cycles don't cause excessive wear, but what about the rest of the country and the world?

Re:Twitter still hasn't unlocked the New York Post's account on Monday October 26, 2020 @03:43PM (#24900418)
What?

I have never used Twitter in any serious capacity.

There are plenty of ways to get all this information and thinking that Twitter is the de-facto place to get emergency life or death situation notifications is downright laughable.

As far as I can tell, I haven't gotten swept up by a tornado yet because I don't have Twitter to see severe storm alerts.

If your only source of news or alerts is a single service run by a corporation that isn't beholden to anyone but themselves, that's your problem.
