Also the standard SLA you get will be wildly different from the bespoke contacts negotiated by enterprises. Just depends on your spend.

This type of insurance does exist. Speak to your broker.
Re:Ask HN: Which is the richest IT niche for a 2-3 years project? on Wednesday November 14, 2018 @12:17PM (#18451555)
LOL oh only 10 mill within 3 years... that is the holy grail of startups.
Not sure about the conditions of employment with Google, but if he has archives of emails long after he's left the company, could a lawsuit be forthcoming?
Re:RCKT: A beautiful user interface for MySQL on Thursday September 20, 2018 @03:24AM (#18030404)
Did you Google the name first? This already conflicts with about 4 different open source projects, a container engine and a programming language
"Their business model looks like their products: an absolute mess."

Quote of the year

Maybe they can spend some of that cash improving the atrocious service levels on gitlab.com
How is this different to www.katacoda.com?
Uhhh Russia?
Re:How to Get Kids to Do Chores: Does the Maya Method Work? on Tuesday September 04, 2018 @03:22AM (#17907222)
Yeh we should be wasteful BECAUSE WE CAN!
Re:CLI: Improved on Thursday August 30, 2018 @05:02PM (#17880725)
Is that a joke? The syntax is worse than PHP and it doesn't run on Linux
Re:GitLab Isn’t Really Open-Source on Monday June 04, 2018 @03:38PM (#17231450)
Give me service availability over "source availability" any day. The gitlab paas product has shocking performance and uptime.
Re:What is wrong with Microsoft buying GitHub on Monday June 04, 2018 @04:51AM (#17225786)
Some of the shenanigans I've seen recently from MS employees in the .NET Core and JS space doesn't inspire me with confidence... For all of Nadella's "turning over a new leaf", it will still take a generation to change the culture of 120 000 employees
Re:Microsoft and GitHub have held acquisition talks on Saturday June 02, 2018 @04:04AM (#17213406)
Depends what you like. I prefer my Git hosting suppliers to have better than 50% uptime.
Hmmm I evaluated a lot of those (mainly OSM-based) geocoders recently. Unfortunately the quality of results is orders of magnitude worse than Google. The only ones that even came close were Mapbox, Mapquest and Here.
Re:Google Cloud Platform’s new interactive CLI on Friday March 16, 2018 @04:57PM (#16603962)
Err, how are they in ANY way similar?
Re:Ask HN: Can't code for hours since it became a job on Monday February 19, 2018 @03:42AM (#16411592)
Find an industry that interests you. Focus on the delivery of your projects. There's more to finishing than just churning out code. You'll get the same reward you used get from hobby coding. Make the financial reward is a side benefit.
Re:RFC: Ubuntu 18.04 LTS Minimal Images on Friday February 02, 2018 @03:17PM (#16293854)
If this is for deployment, why not just use debian slim?
Re:GitLab 10.4 released on Tuesday January 23, 2018 @12:29PM (#16215339)
Jacob that stuff really has no effect on the stability of the CI system and private runners, which is the real problem.
Re:Anaconda 5.0 Released on Friday October 27, 2017 @03:25AM (#15566358)
If you use data science libraries like numpy, pandas etc then these rely on OS level packages like libgfortran and liblapack. Anaconda is a way to guarantee you are running a known stack from dev machine through to production. This is the key benefit IMO (as well as getting improving deploy times)
Ummm Google Drive?
Re:Uncle Bob and Silver Bullets on Friday October 06, 2017 @03:34PM (#15419730)
Can we stop talking about Uncle Bob? He's like the old, weird, drunk, racist uncle at a wedding. His ideas haven't really been relevant for about 10 years, and he is increasingly posting ranty, politicised, attention-seeking diatribes...
Re:Keybase's mission is to make encryption mainstream on Wednesday September 27, 2017 @03:24PM (#15351366)
Authenticator Plus. It's a paid product, but allows me to sync my TOTP tokens to my Google drive account, so I'll never have that problem again.
Re:The Best Health Care System in the World on Monday September 18, 2017 @05:12PM (#15279648)
Having grown up in Australia and lived my adult life in the UK and Switzerland, it is hard to argue with the result. The level of care in CH is outstanding, even at the basic level. The NHS is very good when it's good (eg. IMO emergency care), but can be equally chaotic and disorganised at times (often the "less important" community level care). Waiting times can be a problem. I also had a great experience with the healthcare in Australia while growing up, but I was lucky enough that my family could afford good private insurance that could fill in the gaps. I can't speak for what it's like now though, haven't lived there for over a decade. Overall probably a fair article.
"Powershell is brilliant"

Wot?

Ugly syntax, cryptic error messages and random idiosyncrasies like misplaced semicolons turning variables into lists... The language is a nightmare.

You realise MS uses git and github internally right?

But hey if you're a happy TFS customer then good for you...

Re:C# – good career choice or not? on Friday May 19, 2017 @02:51AM (#14373469)
The language itself is fine. Lots of good FP concepts. The mentality of the wider .NET community is close-minded and insular, lots of NIH syndrome, architecture astronauts and enterprise frameworks (even at small companies), which I think is borne mostly out of its corporate heritage. There are exceptions (the f# community for one, and the odd nuget project) but in the large that has been my experience. Even coming back to .NET this year after a few years away, I find not much has changed (despite the recent OSS "renaissance")
Am I able to use a single ALB across many Elastic Beanstalk applications?
Containers are for a completely different use case than system packages.
Re:Australia hasn't had a recession for over 25 years on Friday March 31, 2017 @03:29AM (#14001808)
So Australia is basically the UK circa early 2000's?
