30% of my body is above the door. 70% is behind it. My chances of getting shot went down 70%. This math is not hard.
fwiw, I have mild tinnitus and have never had anything stronger than child Tylenol syrup - and that maybe once every two years or so.
Re:Cybertruck Bullet Test [video] on Friday December 01, 2023 @11:06PM (#38495782)
You are, of course, trying to be sarcastic. However, the majority of people who shoot at cars are not trained marksmen. The majority of your body is indeed behind the door, not behind the window. Bullets from an untrained shooter are essentially randomly distributed.

In short, if I had to drive through Chicago at night, this is without a doubt one of the best consumer vehicles to do that in.

Over time, yes. But over, say, three weeks, science can do a lot of damage to an economy before it self-corrects.

Wow, that picture is striking. It needs to be an automatic reply to about 10% of comments on the subject, both here and Reddit.
Re:Japan automakers play catch-up in EV race on Wednesday November 29, 2023 @08:09PM (#38467854)
Yeah, but my phone on a vent mount works fine for that.

Usually on any trip that brushes up against usable range, I do the math kind of backwards. I know the distance for the trip, and know how much buffer I have. Then I just look at the trip distance elapsed, compared to the GOM, and if they are roughly 1:1 I know I’m trending well.

My 9 year old leaf is an S model and has none of that - it’s blissfully simple. Prefer it over the SL model also in the family.

Can you get a temporary one that is revocable later? (Not an OpenAI user myself, but that would seem to be a way to lower the risk to acceptable levels)
> I'd bet a good sum you're a PPL.

I'm not even in the US; you're barking up the wrong tree. I apologize for disclosing a relevant fact. Won't happen again. Thanks for the link to CFR25.

Please do read what you just wrote, and consider whether the tone and much of the content is necessary.
Seems like that's how we get Google, though. They've eliminated human error by eliminating humans who can make decisions. I can't say for certainty that's any better.
Pilot here - it's legal to fly at 12,500 in an unpressurized aircraft indefinitely. See https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-14/chapter-I/subchapter-F.... Cabin pressurization is set to a lower altitude, but that's not for a legal requirement. It's just nicer to be at higher pressurization.

And, I mean, think about it - there are _towns_ at 9k+ feet.

Re:Kodak sues Tesla for using stolen technology for Autopilot on Tuesday November 14, 2023 @10:43PM (#38273067)
The actual complaint: https://www.bloomberglaw.com/public/desktop/document/Monumen...

Looks like a patent troll (it's not Kodak, it's "MONUMENT PEAK VENTURES, LLC") who thinks they have patents covering basically anything that uses computer vision segmentation.

Do you need an ESP32 vs an 8266? I believe the 8266’s are more energy efficient.

In either case, you can put them in a deep sleep that uses minuscule amounts of energy and can wake back up on a timer. I’d start there.

Law enforcement (and prosecutors) are increasingly unconcerned with theft of “small” amounts, and theft by groups of people they’ve decided to stop prosecuting.

I’m happy that Apple isn’t just saying “meh, not our problem”, and it’s one reason I buy their stuff.

Re:You Paid $1k for an iPhone, but Apple Still Controls It on Sunday November 12, 2023 @10:43AM (#38241110)
Textbook confounded reasoning: it’s possible no one stole your phone _because_ they’ve been made such undesirable targets for theft.

One of my “good enough for Grandma” criteria is that she can’t click on a link in a Facebook post promising nine million Candy Crush points for installing an exfiltrate-all-the-data app from some App Store alternative.

Appears Cruise isn’t giving these remote drivers a steering wheel and gas; rather they make strategic decisions: Go around this, follow this path, pull over, etc. The car is able to follow a path on its own. Determining the correct path is where it gets hard.
Re:Joint Statement on AI Safety and Openness on Thursday November 02, 2023 @02:54PM (#38118326)
Genuine question - does it seem plausible that a few GB of content could truly be wiped off the Internet?

I’m not in the piracy scene, but my impression was they routinely pass full res movies around the Internet without much barrier to discovering and downloading them, at least to technically competent users. Is that still true?

California.

Dude has a track record of converting "impossible" to "late".
I feel compelled to point out that I had a Nexus too. The USB-C cable lasted fine, possibly because the phone spontaneously bricked itself and the Google zealots told me to put it in the oven.
If you’re serious - any profession in which you’re paid $x/hr, and a cheap knockoff cable could fail and burn 130/x hours of time.

Extra worth it because Murphy’s law will make it fail at the worst possible moment.

Or more likely, your cheap knockoff cable works well enough except when Joe from accounting is warming his Chef Boyardee in the microwave across the building. That kind of intermittent heisenbug can stealthily burn dozens of valuable hours and not show up on any accounting line.

Re:YouTube gets reminder to follow EU law over Hamas content on Saturday October 14, 2023 @07:37PM (#37885311)
Why exactly don’t US companies withdraw any physical presence they have in the EU, and then just ignore them? Seems like the ROI on being within arm’s reach of the EU is getting worse and worse.

Then let the EU set up a great firewall if they want. I’d rather that than they screw up the whole internet for the rest of us.
