Re:Design Patterns on Saturday April 25, 2009 @10:59PM (#579590)
Nice summary of design patterns. Having a design pattern book on hand is a wise choice for any programmer.

Personally, I use 'Design Patterns: Elements of Reusable Object-Oriented Software.' However, Wikipedia or this website are fine.

Can anyone comment on sourcemaking.com's 'Design Patterns - Simply'?

Philosophy is a degree that is often taken by people going into Law. So my guess is that a lot of the Philosophy income is from lawyers.

International Relations (noted in the article) also sounds like a degree that would be popular for pre-law.

My guess.

Re:Ask HN: Help me find a good databases textbook on Wednesday November 26, 2008 @11:13AM (#377719)
Here is a vote for "Database Management Systems" by Ramakrishnan and Gehrke

I learned from this book. I also know a few graduate students who studied databases (or some varient) and they continued to use this book throughout their studies.

(I know nothing of the other book though, so this is a one-sided view)

Re:Ask HN: Good OS X data modeling software? on Sunday November 02, 2008 @11:16AM (#351429)
You may want to glance at 'R' which is an open source alternative to 'S'. http://www.r-project.org/

'R' is used to manipulate data and graphically display the results. I've never used it myself, but I know it's used in my University's Computer Science department.

I agree. My understanding of REST has became a little more clear after reading the article. Glad it was posted here.
