I have also done it. My MacBook Pro felt like a torture to use until I filed the edges. Much better now.

I suspect almost everyone who is savvy is already using LLMs instead of Google, I have been for awhile. (If you only read the summary from google and don’t actually click on results links you are also using an LLM)
Re:Hyundai Paywalls Brake Pads replacement on Ioniq 5 N
on Sunday November 16, 2025 @07:33AM (#45944642)
This has nothing to do with EVs, and likely all new Hyundais do (or will?) use this same diagnostic system.
For comparison, Teslas do not require purchase of their software for basic maintenance, the service mode that is accessible to the user is amazing, has so many diagnostics tools available for free.
Oh and by the way, from my experience Teslas don’t ever need brake pads replaced unless you are taking the car to the track. I suspect the same is true for most other EVs.

Good. They not only suspended his account, but also removed his last video where he encouraged the protesters to go home and be peaceful.
Removal of that video on all platforms affected the public opinion enormously.

Let’s have restaurants raise prices to cover employee salaries, and make it illegal for them to ask for tips. Customers who want to tip need to do so without solicitation. (Not sure how this would work with credit card terminals though).

We simply wouldn’t need “g” and would say that acceleration due to gravity on earth is sqrt(pi).

3.92V is very conservative, that is a good voltage for long term storage even. It should be safe to charge to 4.05-4.10V regularly.

Yes, just like when you leave a key for any car inside the car.
Re:A man says he accidentally unlocked and drove someone else’s Tesla ...
on Saturday March 11, 2023 @07:25AM (#35107730)
The explanation is likely simple: the owner of the car left their car unlocked and either had the key card on the center console, or left their paired phone (which acts as the key) inside the car.
These details were likely left out to make a more interesting story.
Re:Ask HN: What are the limitations on EV service life?
on Tuesday September 27, 2022 @09:49AM (#32995197)
From my experience of working on a few Teslas, I would say they are easier to repair than most ICE cars. Well at least the newer ones (model 3 and Y).

on Tuesday September 27, 2022 @08:08AM (#32994322)
If you can’t charge above 80% at 3kw then you have a major problem with your car. Cell balancing does not require high wattage charging.

Long term solar + EVs will win. With enough solar panels and backup batteries no generators are needed. Currently they are too expensive, but will become more affordable in the future.

Often one would get that feeling when seeing a cyclist because we realize that while we see THIS specific cyclist NOW, at some point in the future we may be in a situation where we do not see one… and end up hitting them, hence the anxiety.
Re:The end of the manual transmission is near?
on Thursday August 25, 2022 @09:53AM (#32593736)
I used to love manual transmissions - almost all cars I owed had one, but only until I first experienced driving a Tesla. Now that I had been driving EVs I like the user experience and feel of control of the car more.

Same can be said about any body control module on any ICE car. ICE cars have more modules than Teslas AND they also have fuses.

Re:Electric Vehicles Are Going to Suck; Here's Why [video]
on Wednesday August 10, 2022 @06:34AM (#32409903)
Yes there are kits for sale that will allow you to interfere with the Tesla drivetrain, you would wire that ecu to the accelerator pedal, etc. Most conversations use battery modules from model S/X as they are smaller modules than ones from 3/Y. You would need to fabricate mounting for the motor(s) and possibly custom half shafts and suspension. And custom mounting for battery modules, custom cooling system, power steering and ac must be converted to electric. Lots of work.

Yea can’t really service the new pack :( have to replace the whole thing. Right Tesla battery packs are expensive (~$8K for a used pack) but once battery costs go down, in perhaps 10 years, I imagine a third party shop would be able to swap the battery for about as much as it currently costs to replace an engine in a typical Volkswagen.

All lights on a Tesla are easily replaceable and surprisingly even headlights and taillights are actually quite affordable on eBay.
Re:Electric Vehicles Are Going to Suck; Here's Why [video]
on Wednesday August 10, 2022 @06:00AM (#32409715)
Btw yesterday I took off a rear motor off a model Y. Probably took me about 2 hours to remove. So much easier than removing am engine or a transmission from an ICE car. Most difficult part to replace is the HV battery- it’s a whole day job. The biggest problem with EVs right now is that there are not enough third party (affordable) shops that are willing to work on them.
