I guess it depends on what you mean by "expect". I'm under no illusions that Facebook and its management are trash. In that sense I don't expect much. But not expecting better is letting them off the hook.
1. Origin is still not conclusive. 2. wtf. that is total bullshit, I'm not even going to bother with that. 3. I came from a country that locked down early for a month. We spend the following summer going to the beach and concerts while the rest of the world suffered on the news. Had other nations actually implemented such a policy quickly and properly, covid could have been controlled. But they didn't. They did it piecemeal.
Yes, yes I do. that should be the standard.
Re:Remove and Disable Apple Macos27 AI Models Tool on Sunday October 04, 2026 @10:12PM (#49959957)
I think the problem isn't the AI, it's the ridiculously small SSDs you can get on Apple products that make one quibble about 12GB in 2026.

I guess this is the real way that AI will destroy humanity. By sucking up everything and making it expensive.

I feel like everyone is very negative about something that hasn't happened yet. This gives a desktop environment to Canva users, where the revenue actually is. It's both a trojan horse and a usable product. Will everyone's worse fears come true? Maybe, maybe not. Mean time you have an excellent app, for free, and very few software products, free, open source, closed source, perpetual, subscription.... last "forever". They are often obsoleted by some new product, new workflow or just a new OS. Take it for what it is right now.
Bit late to this thread, but you mention their design defects which bother the shit out of me. It’s been this way a long time now, but I hate, absolutely HATE how they changed save as (cmd+shift+s) to duplicate document in some of their apps. And then you close the duplicated document because that is not what you wanted, and it asks you if you really want to delete it. Delete what? It does not exist on the file system! I know one might say that technically it does or something because of versioning or some shit… the way every other OS and non-Apple app works was not broken. And I dont know anyone who likes pasting in text formatting as a default. MS broke that too. Why would ya change the functionality of an existing keyboard shortcut?
yep. dickheads.
It's why I never really bothered with Mac OS or iOS development. I don't have time to waste searching for answers. What an absolute PITA.

I like learning from 3rd party sources, but there HAS to be an official, maintained 1st party source or there is no point.

I'm a teapot.
Yeah you can tell dumb people from smart people, dumb people, when they are older, think they know a thing to two by virtue of being older, while smart people recognize other smart people regardless of age.

Well, that’s one way that’s relevant to the discussion anyway.

And yet styling form elements is still pretty limited.
I'm sorry, should they have voted for Trump instead? Those where the only real pragmatic choices. I'm not sure if the boomers listening to music with messages about political change are the same boomers who voted for Reagan. Those who want real change are always dwarfed by "moderate" status quo types, who are largely apolitical and uninformed and therefore easily swayed by fascist messages such is the fundamental nature of the average person throughout time. It takes effort and thought to remain progressive.

Re:Using a catch-all domain is a mistake on Wednesday June 01, 2022 @07:15PM (#31589358)
This is kind of less about the mistake of using a catchall and more about the mistake of naming it so obviously.

Most people could not / would not go and teach themselves chemistry in their bedroom. While not a savant, it sounds like he might have benefited from being given direction from an interested adult.
Point-by-point: phones can (should be able to) unlock from portrait for video. As I said, video is generally better in landscape, so it's not really about TVs, TVs are landscape because viewing video is better in landscape. Why anyone has to even argue this OBVIOUS point just demonstrates the militant ridiculousness of people that get on the defensive because they often (not always) put no thought into their video compositions. Vertical video look stupid, get over it.
Well you can do what ya like, but I, as a viewer do have the ability to turn my phone to landscape to view landscape videos. What are you shooting? Pile drivers in action?
Yes you are holding it wrong because the resulting video is clearly wrong if you view the video on a TV (same aspect ratio, other orientation), a computer or if you watch movies, or if you, well, see out your eyes. If you want to capture just about any action, it's going to look better in landscape, and that is why EVERYTHING until phones were put in the hands of plebs is shot in landscape.

Now, you could argue that we've gone more mobile, and newer social media formats expect portrait, but, that doesn't change that it's risen because people take videos and never consider, "hmmm, if I turn it around, I get a better picture and it looks more like a TV! Duurrr." Just because it's more popular doesn't mean it's not stupid AF.

My god it's tragic that vertical video has become a legitimate format when it really just arose from people holding their phones wrong.
But it's not from Greek mythology is it? It's always Christian mythology that is used in these sort of openers. It's almost always the default goto here. What lessons can we draw from the good book today?
Somewhat amusing that the article starts off using a parable from the bible. Maybe it's more amusing to someone outside the the US.

Should say... I dunno, Alphabet provide un solicited commentary on their take of... Australia's refugee detention centres? Not really.

Should a Russian-based company make a statement on their country invading another as the world (of customers) looks on? Probably.

Politics is everywhere, avoiding it can sometimes be an unintended statement too. Sometimes you have to state your position or others will state it for you.

Re:AirPods don't “just work” on Wednesday January 26, 2022 @11:18PM (#30096152)
I've had the sound on a video playing on my mac disappear, only to find that the mac decided to randomly connect to the AirPods... that are in their case.
The funny thing is that chch is historically the most un-diverse city in nz. When something trashy or racist happens, and it happens in chch, people in other parts of nz (particularly in the north island) roll their eyes and say “Christchurch…” [in dumb voice].
Thank you, that was very thorough and enlightening.
Re:Apps Getting Worse on Sunday August 08, 2021 @09:27PM (#28111823)
I used to really like Adobe apps. But every year the apps get slower. Every year they change some part of the UI and sometimes don't provide an option to do it the 'legacy' way. Photoshop has changed keyboard shortcuts and reasoning behind their undo shortcuts; Indesign always centres on the selected object if you zoom out with the keyboard; Acrobat makes saving a step-by-step process... I could probably cite 20 better examples if I could be bothered.

And yet, YET, they flatly refuse to make their apps do proper mac full screen.

Could you please expand on the other uses of contact tracing in those countries?
