Ahh good memories. I wrote Pente for PalmOS back in 2004 or 2005, complete with a computer opponent using a minimax tree with alpha/beta pruning. Unfortunately I never finished or released it. It was so much fun to do early mobile development - it compared to nothing else I'd done at the time. And it wasn't easy. This is definitely an accomplishment.

This does seem to be the latest trend - passswordless authentication or "magic links."
Re:Things I Wish I'd Known Before Using Vagrant on Friday October 27, 2017 @11:13AM (#15569162)
Also big fan of vagrant global-status. I have it aliased to vgs in my terminal.

Also very helpful for those using Vagrant on OSX is Vagrant Manager [0] which gives you menu-bar integration and a quick interface to turn VMs on and off. It's useful even to remind myself when I've left some VMs on, especially if I'm running on battery.

I enjoyed this, and was impressed that it was written by a high school senior.
Re:Real estate site Redfin files for IPO on Friday July 07, 2017 @08:43PM (#14723401)
Some food for thought: "The future of employment: How susceptible are jobs to computerisation?"[1] which has been discussed on HN previously, lists "Appraisers and Assessors of Real Estate" at .9 probability of computerization and "Real Estate Brokers" at .97. It's certainly not a solved problem, but these two jobs are nearly at the top of the list (or bottom, as the list is in reverse order).

Knowledge of process, not just market. Which, don't get me wrong should also be easy to automate.
Really interesting idea of running separate instances and synchronizing them. I wonder if this could be done in legacy games to support VR - an instance for each eye - and each instance's game state and camera position synced except for slight horizontal offset for left eye vs right eye. Xwing VR!
Re:Why Amazon is eating the world on Monday May 15, 2017 @11:54AM (#14342542)
Half of my Amazon packages are now delivered by an Amazon van or by some guy's personal vehicle with an Amazon magnet on it. I believe they're a mix of the Flex[1] program the author referred to and private companies Amazon is contracting[2]. Not a stretch to see them adding pickup as a service and competing directly with USPS, UPS, FedEx etc. See also the companies they're acquiring in this area[3].

I read Chomsky's Understanding Power on Aaron's recommendation [1]. I found it equally transformative.

Re:Facebook is terrifying on Saturday February 04, 2017 @08:19PM (#13570181)
Myself and someone I just met were suggested as friends to each other after we met. Neither looked up the other. Neither created any contacts in our phone. Only possibility is our FB app knew we were both in the same place at the same time for a few hours.
Re:Fake News Challenge on Wednesday February 01, 2017 @02:16PM (#13543930)
I am I missing something or is this challenge to produce a system which determines if the headline agrees with a body of text? Many so called "fake news" sites would pass this test with flying colors as their fake headlines are supported by equally fake stories. This seems more like a test against clickbait.

It's kind of just a repost of the BBC article http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-37211051 which itself is thin but at least has photos.

Re:People with names that break computers on Friday March 25, 2016 @09:51AM (#11360018)
I had a strange experience where my cable company's mobile app, which streams most channels, was missing audio on a few channels. After escalating the issue to an engineer, he finally got back to us and told us that if a username contained "ts" like mine did this issue would happen. After making a second username without that combination, all worked fine. I'd still like to know what logic in their application would get stumped by these two letters.
Re:A simple script to postpone your own email on Thursday January 14, 2016 @02:23PM (#10903722)
For Gmail you can do similar scripting with Google Apps Script. This isn't exactly the same, but it's a similar example. http://gmailblog.blogspot.com/2011/07/gmail-snooze-with-apps...

I think in our world as well, VR will really take off when technology like this is applied.

This helped make reading this a little easier. Copy and paste to your URL bar. You may have to retype the javascript: as it appears to get stripped for security.

Re:What does it take to run a web app with 5K – 10K users? on Friday January 09, 2015 @02:34PM (#8863966)
This is true, without the right tools. I am moving to logstash with kibana to do this, and it's looking very promising. See http://www.elasticsearch.org/videos/kibana-logstash/
Conflating the Open Source community at large with the Linux community, the Linux development community, and the Linux kernel development community does not help him make his case.
Re:Looking Back at the White House Hackathon on Saturday March 02, 2013 @01:27PM (#5310436)
I think it was a good first step. It may be fairer to judge the event against the history of collaborative software development at the White House (nonexistent) than against that same history elsewhere.
