This author twists himself into knots to morally rationalize Russia's invasion of Ukraine:

https://www.craigmurray.org.uk/archives/2024/02/putin-histor...

Today's post asserts other points of Russian propaganda (e.g., about Ukraine being irrevocably "corrupt") without any evidence. The Poland-Ukraine coalition is currently subject to heavy Russian interference, and this author seems to be playing a part in that:

https://www.reuters.com/business/media-telecom/russia-exploi...

Even before the Russian invasion of Ukraine he was seemingly muddying the waters around the Novichok poisoning of Sergei Skripal:

Apple recently a purchased a company with seemingly equivalent technical capabilities:

Hope you guys are well-positioned patent-wise.

If someone generated a website whole-cloth from an LLM, how can we trust anything on it?
Looks like nvAlt didn’t pull the database storage upgrades from the new NV. There are GH issues of people losing data from older versions so I’d assume those bugs remain.

The nvAlt commits are rapid fire and no longer come from elasticThreads, so I’m assuming the other author is just vibe coding now without understanding the original codebase.

No AI, except that it’s obvious this website HTML was generated entirely with AI.
It’s not really a matter of being surprised, is it? It’s a matter of whether they should be mercenary in the first place. Claiming that some behavior was expected is just another way to shut down criticism through cynicism.

Sounds like touch screens on laptops are so great! I sure am excited about the future of touch screen Macs! /s
Do you know what loading a sample into a scanning tunneling microscope involves?
Administering phase 3 drug trials is the most expensive part of the process by far. They conveniently put that at the end.
At a certain point we just have to consider them all participants in a single oligarchic conspiracy to overturn democracy. If we cannot get justice through the system then it will have to be done by the masses themselves.
They have also arrested citizens simply for driving in their own car proximate to an ICE kidnapping. But if we preemptively act like we have no rights then they've already won.
European countries have been embracing and funding free software at all levels of government and business at an accelerating rate, and doing so with the same ethos of personal freedom and autonomy. It would make sense to continue to that trajectory in other technological areas.
CBP believes it has the right to files saved locally on your device itself. However explicitly cloud-hosted data (that is not stored on the device) is supposed to be off-limits, as I understand it.

And keep in mind that American citizens cannot be denied entry to the country for refusing to unlock or hand over their devices. They might hold you for a little while, but they cannot stop you.

Voter Protection Program: Countering Lies about the 2020 Presidential Election

https://statesuniteddemocracy.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/01...

Ballot Harvesting

Myth: Nevada’s expansion of mail-in voting resulted in illegal ballot harvesting and fraudulent votes for mail-in ballots.

Facts: Nevada courts found no fraud for any votes, including mail-in votes.

“The Court finds there is no evidence that voter fraud rates associated with mail in voting are systematically higher than voter fraud rates associated with other forms of voting. …[T]he illegal vote rate totaled at most only 0.00054 percent.”30

• Nevada voters followed the law with respect to the ballot collection.

• Secretary Cegavske, a Republican, defended the integrity of the election. In fact, Secretary Cegavske issues her own “myth versus fact” document that debunks all these conspiracies. She states that “we have yet to see any evidence of wide-spread fraud.” She noted that four separate cases questioned the integrity of the election in Nevada. In all cases, “[a]fter examining records presented, each case was discounted due to a lack of evidence.” She said that “we have not been presented with evidence of non-citizens voting in the 2020 election.”

Citation? And do you think that one person breaking the law absolves someone else?

The practice of deliberately engineering software without full understanding of the implementation, especially when it comes to robotics, should be illegal. Technology serves society alone and it should progress at a pace that is sustainable for adaption. Your excitement for a “singularity” does not outweigh someone else’s health and safety.
e-bikes in particular have reduced fossil fuel use by huge amounts compared to EVs. When you consider that most of a car’s energy is used simply to move the car itself, the aggregate inefficiencies are staggering.
"Won't somebody please think of the corporations!?"
Yes, its the suburbs, but it's because of the car-dependency -- not as much the single family detached homes.

It's been doing this for years now to try to get me sign into iCloud. I finally gave up and signed into the free version, then disabled every single service.
Maybe recruited by saudi intelligence. The AI doomer cult is just another arm of the same "rationalist" philosophy that the oligarchs are using as cover for their monopolization of compute resources.
Re:Thinking will become a hobby on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @01:28AM (#50067147)
The corporate managerial classes no longer rule; we now have a struggle for power among would-be oligarchs who are willing to burn their own cash for control of mass media (e.g., Twitter and Paramount).
Re:AI Models Can Provably Hide Arbitrary Capabilities on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @01:24AM (#50067115)
The paper's abstract itself says that behavior can be encrypted such that it remains opaque even with full access to model weights.
Re:AI Models Can Provably Hide Arbitrary Capabilities on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @01:12AM (#50067033)
>It's not about AI agents being able to hide what they can do.

But it is.

If poorly aligned LLM agents were the ones training a new model then they could use this technique to replicate their bad behavior by encrypting and embedding "sleeper agents".

Did you just move the goalposts to “it didn’t kill me”?

We’re talking about society-wide effects here, including harm to children for which Facebook is paying 17 billion dollars.

>But if no lab can keep a lid on their agents, then what?

The labs should be sued or prosecuted out of existence until they can comply with the law. The law applies equally to everyone.

>you don’t need to constantly be acknowledging the larger problem

When those larger social problems continue to exist and are ignored by a huge swath of society then constantly acknowledging them becomes a prerequisite to moving forward. Of course it's annoying--no one wants to have to do that; but collective action is the only way to solve collective problems. And it's more than annoying to people at the receiving end of those problems. Women risk life-changing outcomes in all of the scenarios implied throughout this discussion.

Re:Our AI Midwife on Saturday October 03, 2026 @06:02PM (#49948226)
There's a certain class of nerd who becomes easily distracted by (and this is being generous) technological solutions that merely paper over the underlying social problems. E.g., "I love riding in Waymos because I can avoid lewd misogynistic harassment from Uber drivers."
