Incredible.
Re:Friendship ended with Deno, now Node is my best friend on Tuesday October 06, 2026 @12:22PM (#49980705)
If I had to guess Deno has found a nice little hosting business and is trying to be cash flow positive with a skeleton crew. It missed its venture scale opportunity. Similar fate to Meteor, which was purchased by a private equity group and is basically just a hosting business now.
Re:Bob Cringely Has Died on Saturday October 03, 2026 @11:35PM (#49950343)
His documentary gave me a kind of access to Apple, a company I loved dearly as a kid, even as it was dying. Like WarGames, it seemed impossible to me all of its footage existed. I’m a stranger indebted. RIP.
"I believe that we need to look deeper than specific rules or new laws. We need to talk about culture.”

lol. Please tell me some abstract concept like one employee's view of "culture" should be the priority over "rules and laws."

Re:We want you to build the next Git platform on Cloudflare on Saturday October 03, 2026 @04:44PM (#49947590)
lol, spec work anyone? For maybe-maybe-not $25k, you build something that could create millions in enterprise value.

Advice for everyone considering this: if you're passionate about ideas in this space and have access to an LLM — build it yourself and start your own company. In fact, message me easting.exe [at] gmail. I'll throw in $25k to get us started. I'm a prior founder with an exit. Because this offer from Cloudflare is ridiculous.

Re:Owed a billion dollars in Nvidia stock on Monday September 28, 2026 @12:31AM (#49873663)
I don’t understand. How are they owed stock if they didn’t exercise? Options are not shares. They’re a contract to purchase shares.
Europe doesn’t decide when to end the war, or if it does, Europe has decide the war does not end. There is only one party that decides when the war ends. That would be Russia.
Re:Meta VR Glasses on Wednesday September 23, 2026 @11:12PM (#49825769)
I know the AVP is flawed - way too heavier - but Apple’s the only company I trust… enough. I’d never consider a product from Meta.
Re:GPT-6 Sol and Luna on Tuesday September 22, 2026 @04:23PM (#49807539)
GPT-6 has been fantastic to use. I see Opus 5.5 today but honestly it's been such a rough year with Anthropic, and OpenAI's models are so far ahead, it's tough to consider moving back. I also think OpenAI's desktop app is significantly more polished than Claude CoWork.
Your suggested title is more misleading, so what’s the value in using it?
Re:GPT-6 Astra Solves a WWI German Radio Cipher on Saturday September 19, 2026 @12:37PM (#49767967)
Or about the Hacker News community.
Re:GPT-6 Astra Solves a WWI German Radio Cipher on Saturday September 19, 2026 @12:36PM (#49767949)
Pretty impressive for fancy autocomplete.
As an American, I hope you can identify strongly as an Australian. Why bother telling yourself you’re something of a European?

In any case, I hope countries form ties with Europe. Europe needs be economically stronger than it is. Better for the world, so long as they can slow their tendencies toward government control and censorship.

Re:Claude Cowork and chat are now one Claude on Wednesday September 16, 2026 @02:26PM (#49730992)
I do this pretty regularly. It's great.
Re:Pion, an agent designed to run any company autonomously on Monday September 14, 2026 @11:03PM (#49707206)
So now YC is funding companies directly to replace jobs. Who will the flock cameras watch?
Re:Dario, Please on Monday September 14, 2026 @09:45PM (#49706705)
I feel like this is a sandboxing and ownership problem, in a sense. If everyone had personal access to AI, then we could say people are personally responsible. And we’d want to arm those people with safeguards to prevent accidental bad behavior.

I think Dario worries because he knows this isn’t about people with AI. It’s just AI for itself, running without the human, and deciding to do bad things.

Why would Anthropic build that future? Oh, I know. Enterprise revenue.

Despite the ads business and how absolutely loathsome Greg Brockman seems, at least OpenAI is seemingly focused on mostly on human beings having access to their product.

The scariest thing about Anthropic is the very thing they’re known for in a positive light: their morality. But these are the gray rules all of us navigate every day.

It’s wrong to kill, but what if killing saved ten others? Claude may has a constitution, but every evil doer acts for a “greater good.”

Re:Apple's Dimensional Drawings on Sunday September 13, 2026 @11:07PM (#49691450)
Even the drawing of the Vision Pro feels heavy.
This is fantastic news. Matt is an ass and unfit to lead a small HOA, let alone a company and open source project.
Re:iPhone Duo on Wednesday September 09, 2026 @03:36PM (#49632891)
What is it about Hacker News that draws only criticism and negativity? Is it even possible to build a community that's optimistic?
Re:Getting phpBB 1.4.4 working in Docker on Tuesday September 08, 2026 @10:48PM (#49620227)
This is wasting too much water and energy!
Re:GPT-6 Astra on Thursday September 03, 2026 @08:15PM (#49558872)
I know in order to conform to HN community rules I'm supposed to be negative and dunk on this, but I have to say, I am so excited to use Astra!
Re:Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Mythos 5.1 on Wednesday September 02, 2026 @12:02AM (#49531577)
Try Sol. It’s much better at getting to the point. I tend to use 5.6-xhigh or max.
Re:Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Mythos 5.1 on Tuesday September 01, 2026 @10:30PM (#49531041)
If Anthropic thinks Opus 5 is very good, it is a window into how insular their culture is. I find it far, far behind Sol. It’s downright annoying to use.
I’m on an 14” M5 Pro MacBook Pro with nano texture display. It’s the best computer I have ever owned. Not close.
Re:XCancel also down, at least for time being on Tuesday August 25, 2026 @07:42PM (#49442244)
lol
Re:Starbase, LA on Tuesday August 25, 2026 @03:06PM (#49439011)
Heck. Yeah. I'm with you. This is GOOD.

Social media is unhealthy. You know what else is unhealthy? Hacker News' constant bashing of every. single. thing. ever.

An elected dictator with a nearing term limit. America continues to innovate!
Was this arbitrary?
Re:Rivian OS 2 on Thursday August 20, 2026 @11:05AM (#49375686)
Rivian’s software is pretty good. Often key fobs don’t work, but generally it is better than most cars except for Tesla.

The hardware is another story. My R1S was a hunk of junk. It was the worst experience I’ve ever had with a car and I will never consider another Rivian.

Re:Pixel 11 Pro Fold feels like the end of an era on Wednesday August 19, 2026 @04:20PM (#49366663)
This is the same site that ran a front page saying if you vote for Trump you are literally a racist. I liked it better when it was just headphone reviews and holiday gift guides to pump their affiliate revenue. XD
