Re:Migrating from Docker to Podman on Saturday September 04, 2021 @02:05PM (#28417521)
Extra packages/steps/incantations that to be performed/installed, introduction of a docker context mechanism that requires understanding, lingering inconsistencies with external filesystem mounting as root owner, incompatibility with most existing docker scripts and compose scripts, confusion on how to get back to root mode, etc.

It just didn't feel like a turn key solution. I have no idea how this would work in CI/CD systems though docker doesn't always need to be as secure there. Docker is a great tool but, like a lot of tech, in the mad rush to market, security was an afterthought and nowhere has it felt more clearly to me than in rootless mode.

Not true. My church and I have no beef with birth-control. It is the issue of whether the unborn are people in the eyes of God that drives conviction.

And things aren't so simple. You cannot demonstrate the unborn are sentient anymore than animals. We cannot demonstrate that either. We choose to err on the side of the unborn out of fear if we're wrong.

What you probably don't realize is how culturally diverse America is, maybe more so than any other country. The thinking and culture varies wildly. Rural Texas could not be more different than urban California.

I care deeply about rights, but I suppose I cannot count myself among the enlightened; I cannot condone abortion since there is no way to ascertain beyond reasonable doubt that the unborn are not sentient people. And in my opinion, showing an ID to vote is just reasonable considering all it's other uses.

Erosion of rights in America is occurring recently through draconian executive orders that mandate behavior without due process. If Texas passes a law through due process, that's your problem not theirs. I don't mean to surmise what across the pond means, but if you're looking for dramatic erosion of rights look to Australia.

Re:Migrating from Docker to Podman on Saturday September 04, 2021 @12:19PM (#28416374)
Having just fought it, Docker rootless is a pain to set up and feels like a hack; it's not the default behavior, requires a lot of additional setup to get it working, behaves differently than rootful docker, and lastly most documentation assumes you're using rootful docker because it's been the only way for years.

The fundamental architecture of docker makes rootless awkward but the company needs to compete with podman now which is architected to fix many of Dockers deficiencies while maintaining it's many strengths.

Docker has been a great tool but running as root has always bothered me. I'm glad they're evolving but it feels a little too late and the migration to rootless, as far as I'm concerned, is not simple. Currently I'm investigating migrating my homelab and development efforts to podman.

Re:Surely We Can Do Better Than Elon Musk on Friday April 09, 2021 @12:17AM (#26746654)
Musk has made massive strides in sectors that benefit humanity like clean energy, space travel, public transportation, etc. Musk has flaws; so does everyone else. Oh but he has deep flaws, says Robinson. Well it turns out that those with deep passions also house deep flaws. Even still Robinson should be grateful visionaries like Musk spent their time and money helping develop civilization to such a comfortable level. Only then after real problems like food, sanitation, housing, transportation, etc. have been solved can Robinson afford an occupation that allows him to criticize contributors unabated while contributing nothing substantial himself.

Now we need people to write and criticize and highlight the issues in our societies and ourselves. But 2021 has so many bigger fish worthy to be fried than Musk. Robinson himself doesn't even have an answer to a "problem" like Musk. That's because he isn't paid to solve real problems; he's paid to talk about imaginary ones. In the early twentieth century, Current Affairs would be publishing headlines like "Surely We Can Do Better Than Thomas Edison". But personally I prefer "Surely we can do better than Nathan J. Robinson."

Re:Ubiquiti all but confirms breach response iniquity on Monday April 05, 2021 @04:11AM (#26696456)
There was a recent discussion[1] on the sub with 1K upvotes and over 500 comments about the breach and I routinely see unabated salty posts and comments about Ubiquiti's downward spiral. I have lurked on the sub for several years (I manage a bunch of Ubiquiti gear) and I never got the impression people were being censored or moderated into submission.

Are there any particular examples of suppression or links to the allegations of censorship? The sub did recently begin allowing equipment picture posts again by popular demand. [2] I suppose an uncharitable interpretation is that that move was appeasement to distract from the breach issue.
