How is the hype cooling? Opus 5.5 is doing most of my job
I’m buying, this is the greatest invention of all time and Anthropic has garnered a pretty solid lead right now.
YCombinator is not a social company. They actually do a ton to try to stop this stuff, it's just hard.
Re:Eight Myths on Software Engineering and GenAI on Saturday August 08, 2026 @10:32AM (#49222195)
Depends on where you work... where I happen to work people sit in Jira meetings all day and in the time they talk about it my team implements it.

So yes "literally everyone has access to it" (what a revelation) but you still need to be smart in how you use it

That’s not what we are empirically seeing though. There is also no way of knowing that things can’t be progressing for the next 5 years. No foundational model company would be spending the amount they are on research if they thought it wasn’t going to pan out
What would possibly tell you that?
Re:The next chapter of our AI momentum on Thursday August 06, 2026 @10:18AM (#49197048)
Off in the sense that he shouldn’t be running the company?
Re:The next chapter of our AI momentum on Thursday August 06, 2026 @10:17AM (#49197024)
It was always benchmaxxed
Re:Eight Myths on Software Engineering and GenAI on Tuesday August 04, 2026 @09:37PM (#49177574)
It does because you can now just steamroll features out the door and make everyone look bad that’s sitting around in meetings all day
Re:Everyone is building LLM routers, we deprecated ours on Friday July 31, 2026 @05:07PM (#49128537)
You do still need to know though, different prompts have different affects on them.
It’s basically because LLMs supersede all of these. The ability to reason, research, and write code applies to everything else and will speed up the innovation cycles there significantly.

Google is losing in the race that really matters

So crazy, at one point they had 3 different systems for interacting with Gemini, all with different auth.

For a company that prides themselves on the smartest engineers, they really struggle with the basics

Re:AI's top startups are barely publishing their research on Wednesday July 29, 2026 @07:14PM (#49104311)
Oh that built on a bunch of ideas that weren’t far off. It was a great discovery but like many it’s standing in tall shoulders
Quantization also started picking up around then, as well as distillation into smaller models

Love monarch, amazing primitives and feels so much lighter than Ray.

Another awesome add on their part

Re:Interview with Mitchell Hashimoto about Ghostty and Zig on Wednesday July 22, 2026 @10:38AM (#49007568)
did you look cool using it though?
Re:Ben Bernanke Joins Anthropic Oversight Trust on Wednesday July 22, 2026 @10:37AM (#49007559)
Can't believe people actually still think this
I know that but they also said Cerebras
This is why you should always distill your models from a competitor.

Let them take on the liability

Sol is running on Cerebras right?
Yeah this is such a funny thing going around. Try to run or train a small/medium sized model on a MacBook. It doesn’t go very good compared to a dedicated gpu

This is likely the right path in the future but it isn’t there yet today

Re:Java 27: What's New? on Friday July 10, 2026 @09:12AM (#48859450)
The best thing to ever happen to the software world was Oracle buying Sun and consequently Java.

Java was great at its time but then had to go. Oracle gaining control over them sped up this process.

Poor Android got caught up and now half our phones don’t work

Re:Java 27: What's New? on Friday July 10, 2026 @09:07AM (#48859385)
Do they have backwards compatibility guarantees?

Otherwise what are we doing here?

Re:Ben Bernanke Joins Anthropic Oversight Trust on Friday July 10, 2026 @12:19AM (#48855695)
Except Anthropic has delivered a truly world changing product…
Re:Interview with Mitchell Hashimoto about Ghostty and Zig on Thursday July 09, 2026 @07:25PM (#48853774)
I feel this way about most Hashi tools, they just seem massively overrated to me.

Ghostty is fine I guess, I find it to be way buggier than iterm with a fraction of the features.

Zig is fine, has some cool stuff, the community seems roughly the same as the rust, with again just way less features.

The rest of the hashi tools are fine, I don’t really use any of them anymore. Vault was a big deal at some point I guess

Re:GPT-5.6 on Thursday July 09, 2026 @01:31PM (#48849536)
There was just a study showing that when presented blindly no one could tell the difference yet users were avid they could
Re:GPT-5.6 on Thursday July 09, 2026 @01:30PM (#48849518)
Agree, I think there was just a blind study that showed no one could tell the difference even though the users were avid they could
I looked into this a bit but unfortunately because of starlink most of this won’t be needed
With a lot of software getting eaten up I’m increasingly interested in biology. Seems like one of the later frontiers that could have massive benefits, and AI is really well suited to help us understand it.
Re:Right to Local Intelligence on Friday July 03, 2026 @12:11AM (#48770611)
The new frontier! I love it
